Associations between hair endocannabinoid concentrations and parental depressive symptoms: A longitudinal study of mothers, fathers, and their offspring up to two years postpartum.

BACKGROUND: About one in five mothers and one in ten fathers experience postpartum depression, with adverse consequences for family health and child development. The aetiology of postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDS) is characterised within a biopsychosocial framework, yet the underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The endocannabinoid system (ECS), which interacts with the glucocorticoid system and is implicated in the pathophysiology of depressive disorders, has not yet been investigated in relation to PPDS. Moreover, longitudinal investigations including both mother…

Fishing for Solutions: How Pre-Conceptional Fish Oil Supplementation in Obese Fathers Reduces Risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Offspring Mice.

Metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a chronic condition with hepatic fat accumulation. The intergenerational effect of obesity has predominantly focused on mothers, with limited studies on paternal obesity. Nutritional intervention with fish oil (FO) has beneficial effects in reducing markers of obesity. We hypothesized that supplementing obese fathers with FO before conception could enhance the metabolic health of their offspring liver. Male mice were assigned to low-fat (LF), high fat (HF), or HF supplemented with FO for 10 weeks. Subsequently, these males were ma…

Multilevel determinants of paternal and child physical activity: qualitative research using dyadic interviews among Mexican heritage fathers living near the Texas-Mexico border.

PURPOSE: Families living near the Texas-Mexico border face disproportionate barriers to physical activity (PA), yet little research has explored how Mexican-heritage fathers perceive and overcome barriers to child PA. The purpose of this study was to examine and describe fathers' perceptions of strategies to improve child PA through a social-ecological lens. METHODS: Fathers (n = 30) living near the Texas-Mexico border colonias completed Spanish-language, father-father dyadic interviews (n = 15) conducted by trained facilitators. Spanish-language audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and…

The Mediation of Care and Overprotection between Parent-Adolescent Conflicts and Adolescents' Psychological Difficulties during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Which Role for Fathers?

BACKGROUND: There is evidence of a significant raise in youths' emotional and behavioral difficulties during the pandemic. Only a few studie … . Major conflicts with parents correlated with lower care and greater overprotection in mothers and fathers. However, parental overprotection and maternal care were not mediators of the relationship between conflict and youths' difficulties. The only exception was represented by paternal care that fully mediated this relationship in both adolescent males …

How well does the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale identify depression and anxiety in fathers? A validation study in a population based Swedish sample.

BACKGROUND: Fathers are increasingly involved in infant care, and depression in postnatal fathers as well as mothers may have negative effects on child development and behaviour. The EPDS has been validated to identify depression in new mothers, but few validation studies have involved fathers and there is doubt as to whether the EPDS measures the same constructs in men as in women. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A population-based sample of 1014 couples were sent the EPDS and the HAD-A subscale 3 months postnatally. All high-scoring fathers and a random sample of fathers scoring low were invited for …

Disclosure patterns of mode of conception among mothers and fathers-5-year follow-up of the Copenhagen Multi-centre Psychosocial Infertility (COMPI) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on disclosure of mode of conception after fertility treatment have focused on donor insemination. We present a large, longitudinal cohort study of fertility patients who conceived through a variety of fertility treatments, including both non-donor and donor techniques. METHODS: A cohort of 2812 women and men (n = 1406 couples) received questionnaires when initiating fertility treatment and at 1-year and 5-year follow-ups. At the 5-year follow up, the response rate was 69.4% and 1036 of the responding participants had at least one child born after fertility treatment.

The moderating role of father involvement in the association between maternal depression and child nutrition: A cross-sectional study in rural Malawi.

This study highlights the critical role of fathers in improving child dietary diversity in low-resource setting, particularly in the context of maternal mental health challenges. Using cross-sectional data of 333 mother-father-child triads in rural Malawi, we examine the association between paternal involvement and child dietary diversity among children aged between 24-60 months. Our findings show that greater father involvement is significantly associated with higher child dietary diversity scores, even after accounting for maternal depressive symptoms. Importantly, we identify a significant …

Intrauterine Growth and Offspring Neurodevelopmental Traits: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis of the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

IMPORTANCE: Conventional epidemiological analyses have suggested that lower birth weight is associated with later neurodevelopmental difficulties; however, it is unclear whether this association is causal. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between intrauterine growth and offspring neurodevelopmental difficulties. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: MoBa is a population-based pregnancy cohort that recruited pregnant women from June 1999 to December 2008 included approximately 114 500 children, 95 200 mothers, and 75 200 fathers. Observational associations between birth weight and neur…

Postpartum Breastfeeding Practices and Attitudes in Parents: A Randomized Study to Evaluate the Effects of Individual and Group Breastfeeding Education of Mothers and Fathers.

Background Antenatal breastfeeding training is defined as the provision of breastfeeding information during pregnancy, which can be given in various ways, such as individual training and group training. The inclusion of fathers in this educational approach is associated with the initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding. However, studies involving fathers are limited. This randomized controlled study aimed to compare the effects of individual and group training given to parents and those of normal hospital practices on mothers' breastfeeding self-effica…

Gestational thyroid hormone concentrations and risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal thyroid function plays an important role in foetal brain development; however, little consensus exists regarding the relationship between normal variability in thyroid hormones and common neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the association between mid-pregnancy maternal thyroid function and risk of clinically diagnosed ADHD in offspring. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. Among children born 2003 or later, we randomly s

A 35-year-old father with persistent Mullerian duct syndrome and seminoma of the right undescended testis: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: A persistent Müllerian duct syndrome is a rare disorder of sexual differentiation characterized by the presence of the female reproductive system in a normal male. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of a 35-year-old father with persistent Müllerian duct syndrome and seminoma in the right undescended testis. The exploratory laparotomy was performed and revealed a mass in the right undescended testis and Müllerian duct structures. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with cryptorchidism and inguinal hernia, the persistent Müllerian duct syndrome should be considered, and radiological

An isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism male with a novel de novoFGFR1 mutation fathered a normal son evidenced by prenatal genetic diagnosis.

Isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is a rare but treatable form of male infertility caused by congenital defect in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion or action. We report a Chinese IHH male with a novel FGFR1 mutation who successfully fathered a normal son. Targeted next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and Sanger sequencing were performed by using the DNA extracted from the pedigree. The patient was treated with gonadotropin and was able to impregnant his wife during the treatment. Amniocentesis was performed at the 18 weeks of gestation. A novel de novo p

TSC1 intragenic deletion transmitted from a mosaic father to two siblings with cardiac rhabdomyomas: Identification of two aberrant transcripts.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by non-cancerous tumors in multiple organs including the brain, kidney, lung, heart, and skin. We encountered a Japanese family consisting of two siblings (a four-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl) with multiple cardiac rhabdomyomas conveying a high risk of TSC and apparently unaffected sibling (a two-year-old girl) and parents. Whole exome sequencing and application of Integrative Genomic Viewer revealed an identical intragenic TSC1 deletion with the breakpoints on intron 15 and exon 19 in the affected sib
