[Prenatal diagnosis of pulmonary hypoplasia camptodactyly syndrome. Hypothesis concerning the origin of hydramnios].

Camptodactyly and pulmonary hypoplasia syndrome was described for the first time in 1974. Today 15 cases have been found. None were subject to a prenatal diagnosis as any ultrasonography. The case we observe is a 27 years old woman, third gestation, showing a polyhydramnios at 25 weeks of gestation. The ultrasonographic examination showed deformation with a rounded abdomen, a narrow thoracic frame slightly concave, no gastric picture and hands in constant flexion. After elimination of the V.A.T.E.R.' syndrome the camptodactyly's syndrome with pulmonary hypoplasia was proposed. Because of the l

Electroencephalographic correlates of working memory deficits in children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder using a single-electrode pair recording device.

OBJECTIVE: Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) exhibit cognitive deficits that can be probed using eye movement tasks. We employed a recently developed, single-sensor electroencephalographic (EEG) recording device in measuring EEG activity during the performance of an eye movement task probing working memory in this population. METHODS: Children with FASD (n=18) and typically developing children (n=19) performed a memory-guided saccade task requiring the participant to remember the spatial location of one, two or three stimuli. We hypothesized that children with FASD would (i

Live fetus inside the urinary bladder: a case report.

Vesicouterine fistula is a rare condition. Its incidence, however, has been increasing due to the higher incidence of cesarean sections. The presence of a live fetus inside the bladder who passed through a vesicouterine fistula is an extremely rare situation. We report a case of woman who underwent two previous cesarean sections, was referred to a hospital due to mild pelvic pain and genital bleeding. At the moment, physical examination was normal. Ultrasound scan revealed a gestational sac inserted into the anterior wall of the uterus, with a living fetus of approximately 13 weeks, with activ

Severe neonatal anemia from fetomaternal hemorrhage: report from a multihospital health-care system.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of fetomaternal hemorrhage that is severe enough to cause neonatal anemia is not known. Owing to its relative rarit … was <3 g dl(-1) in 7 (29%). All 7 mothers in whom neonatal Hgb was <3 g dl(-1) had reported absent fetal movement, as did 13 of 18 mothers when the initial Hgb was <7 g dl(-1). Outcomes were poorer in those with the lowest initial Hgb; in the two lowest, one died on day 1, and the other developed a grade 4 intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). The adverse outcomes …

A finite element study of soft-tissue deformation during birth in australopithecines: Assessing pelvic floor stress and fetal head rotation in early hominins.

The emergence of bipedal locomotion during human evolution has considerably reshaped the hominin pelvis, which also impacted the pelvic floor musculature. Among early hominins, australopithecines have an anteroposteriorly narrow, transversely wide bony pelvis. This study investigates whether this particular shape of the birth canal weakens the pelvic floor during childbirth in these hominins and if the pelvic floor contributes to rotational birth. As such, we explored the stress values at the pelvic floor that occur during the descent of the fetal head, using 3D models of extant humans based o

Human Cerebellum Gangliosides: A Comprehensive Analysis by Ion Mobility Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

The human cerebellum is an ultraspecialized region of the brain responsible for cognitive functions and movement coordination. The fine mechanisms through which the process of aging impacts such functions are not well understood; therefore, a rigorous exploration of this brain region at the molecular level is deemed necessary. Gangliosides, sialylated glycosphingolipids, highly and specifically expressed in the human central nervous system, represent possible molecular markers of cerebellum development and aging. In this context, for a comprehensive determination of development- and age-specif

Fetomaternal Hemorrhage and Choriocarcinoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: This case describes chronic anemia of a late preterm infant secondary to maternal-fetal hemorrhage and subsequent findings of maternal choriocarcinoma. CLINICAL FINDINGS: This infant was born at 35 6/7 weeks gestational age via cesarean section for non-reassuring fetal heart tones. The mother presented with decreased fetal movement and the biophysical profile was 4/8. Following delivery, the infant did not require respiratory support, was vigorous with extreme pallor, and had a hemoglobin of less than 5 on cord gas. PRIMARY DIAGNOSIS: Chronic anemia secondary to fetomaternal hemo…

Iron transport across the human placenta is regulated by hepcidin.

BACKGROUND: Transport of iron across the placenta is critical for appropriate development of the fetus. Iron deficiency during pregnancy remains a major public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, often exacerbated by infectious diseases leading to altered iron trafficking via inflammatory responses. Herein, we investigate the role of hepcidin, a master regulator of iron homeostasis, on regulation of iron transport across trophoblast cells. METHODS: We utilized the Jeg-3 choriocarcinoma cell line for analysis of the expression of transferrin receptor, ferritin, an

Comparison of prenatal and postnatal MRI findings in the evaluation of intrauterine CNS anomalies requiring postnatal neurosurgical treatment.

AIM: To assess the diagnostic capability of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children suspected antenatally to harbor central nervous system (CNS) defects that require immediate postnatal neurosurgical treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2003 and 2005, 13 fetal MRI scans were performed in mothers suspected to have fetuses with congenital CNS defects that would require surgery soon after birth. Comparisons between antenatal and postnatal scans were made with emphasis on diagnostic accuracy of antenatal examinations. RESULTS: All mothers were scanned using heavily T2-weighted fa

Infant survival in prematurity.

Reduction of neonatal mortality and the rate of stillbirth may be expected from improved management of spontaneous labor and delivery.Neither roentgenographic measurement nor the inception of fetal movement or heartbeat nor any other single test is an index of fetal maturity; all must be considered together. Prenatal care, particularly supplemented diet, will help to avoid premature delivery, or at least to prolong pregnancy; since the fetus undergoes accelerated growth during the last weeks of pregnancy, even slight extension of gestation increases the chances for survival. Analgesia in the f…

[Treatment of an infant with severe neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy sequelae with transplantation of human neural stem cells into cerebral ventricle].

OBJECTIVE: Severe newborn hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) has a very high rate of disability and no effective treatment is available. The present study aimed to preliminarily evaluate the effects of human neural stem cell transplantation in treatment of severe neonatal HIE. METHODS: The patient was a 75-day old male infant with sequelae of severe HIE who had highly delayed development of intelligence and movement and myotonia. MRI showed multiple cerebromalacia and encephalatrophy. Cells obtained from the forebrain of an 11-week old fetus were cultured and amplified for 15 days. And the

Late diagnosis of intraplacental choriocarcinoma co-existing with fetomaternal haemorrhage causing fetal demise: A case report.

Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (IC) is a rare disease, occurring in approximately 1 in 50,000 pregnancies. A 33-year-old woman, gravida 2 para 0, sustained an intrauterine fetal death due to fetomaternal haemorrhage (FMH) at 36 weeks of gestation after presenting with decreased fetal movements in the days prior. The placenta macroscopically appeared normal. However, histological examination revealed an intraplacental choriocarcinoma. Assessment of this woman's quantitative beta human chorionic gonadotropin (bHCG) level was negative and a computerized tomography scan of her chest, abdomen and p…

Maternal myasthenia gravis: a cause for arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a condition defined as contractures in more than two joints and in multiple body areas. The principal mechanism leading to the development of AMC in utero is decreased fetal movement. OBJECTIVE: Both fetal and maternal factors can lead to this condition, including maternal myasthenia gravis (MG) which is the topic of this review. MG is an autoimmune disease in which antibodies (immunoglobulin G) are formed against acetylcholine receptors. The disease can affect both genders, but women are more prone to develop the disease in early adulth…

Altered levels of brain neurotransmitter from new born rabbits with intrauterine restriction.

Fetal intrauterine growth restriction generates chronic hypoxia due to placental insufficiency. Despite the hemodynamic process of blood flow, redistributions are taking place in key organs such as the fetal brain during intrauterine growth restriction, in order to maintain oxygen and nutrients supply. The risk of short- and long-term neurological effects are still present in hypoxic offspring. Most studies previously reported the effect of hypoxia on the levels of a single neurotransmitter, making it difficult to have a better understanding of the relationship among neurotransmitter levels an
