DNA recovery from fired cartridge cases (FCCs) found at a crime scene is complicated by the limited DNA amounts typically available for collection. While this challenge is unavoidable, recovery rates may be improved by optimizing handling and packaging processes to better preserve the available DNA. Retained lead fragments from nonfatal firearm injuries pose a risk of lead poisoning. While chelation is well-established as a lead poisoning treatment, it remains unclear whether chelation mobilizes lead from embedded lead fragments. Here, we tested whether 1) DMSA/succimer or CaNa2EDTA increases mobilization of lead from fragments in vitro, and 2) succimer is efficacious in chelating fragment lead in vivo, using stable lead isotope tracer methods in a rodent model of embedded fragments. This paper reports the wounding effectiveness tests of four kinds of spherical steel fragments, striking against live tissues at various velocities. The most pronounced wound characteristic for the spherical fragments was that the entrances were larger than the exits; the higher the striking velocity, the larger the size of the wound. The skin near the entrance tended to be torn away when the striking velocity was above 1,200 m/s. As a general rule, most exits appeared to be circular with a diameter slightly bigger than that of the fragment. Shapes of the wound channels were conic in general.

Surgery for 772 patients with middle- or upper-third facial injuries was carried out between 1984 and 1990 in two university hospitals in Tehran. The most common etiological factor was firearm injuries (69.04%; n = 533), followed by road traffic accidents (24.44%; n = 189). Suicide via multiple gunshot wounds is an uncommonly encountered phenomenon, which is important to recognize in the forensic community. Suicide by multiple shotgun wounds is a fleeting rare entity with few previously reported cases in the literature.
