Carp experiment in space microgravity--a visual-vestibular sensory conflict model.

In the 8-d flight mission of Spacelab-J (STS-47) conducted in 1992, behavior of the dorsal light response (DLR) and EEG activity of the cerebellum were intermittently examined for two carp, normal and otolith-removed. The latter carp had immobilization trouble caused by twisting of the EEG cable on day 2 inflight. The problem continued for the remainder of the experiment. Analyses made on the normal carp provided additional evidence in fish for sensory-motor disorder and readjustment during early phase of microgravity, thus supporting the sensory conflict hypothesis for space motion sickness.

Biosatellite 3: a physiological interpretation.

On 28 June 1969, a macaque monkey was boosted into orbit for a projected 30-day flight. It was aborted after 8 1/2 days and the monkey died 16 hours later. Data collected indicate: Weightlessness and the hypothermia acted to shift blood volume centrally; this provided a strong drive for the reduction of blood volume. Restraint, unusual vestibular sensations, and the continuing polydipsia all acted to disturb the central mechanisms affecting salt and water metabolism; it is probable that the function of the kidney was significantly affected and that an excessive amount of salt was lost. We can

Evaluation of Automated Object-Detection Algorithms for Koala Detection in Infrared Aerial Imagery.

Effective detection techniques are important for wildlife monitoring and conservation applications and are especially helpful for species that live in complex environments, such as arboreal animals like koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus). The implementation of infrared cameras and drones has demonstrated encouraging outcomes, regardless of whether the detection was performed by human observers or automated algorithms. In the case of koala detection in eucalyptus plantations, there is a risk to spotters during forestry operations. In addition, fatigue and tedium associated with the difficult and r

Behavior is movement only but how to interpret it? Problems and pitfalls in translational neuroscience-a 40-year experience.

Translational research in behavioral neuroscience seeks causes and remedies for human mental health problems in animals, following leads imposed by clinical research in psychiatry. This endeavor faces several problems because scientists must read and interpret animal movements to represent human perceptions, mood, and memory processes. Yet, it is still not known how mammalian brains bundle all these processes into a highly compressed motor output in the brain stem and spinal cord, but without that knowledge, translational research remains aimless. Based on some four decades of experience in th

Ethyl pyruvate ameliorate inflammatory response of sinonasal mucosa by inhibiting HMGB1 in rats with acute rhinosinusitis.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) has been known to involve in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to establish animal model of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS), and determine whether ethyl pyruvate (EP) attenuate inflammatory response of sinonasal mucosa by inhibiting HMGB1 in ARS animals. Thirty-six Sprague Dawley (SD) rat were used as follows: six normal controls without intervention (group 1); thirty rats were used for establishment of ARS rats model by nasal insertion of Merocel sponge, and model rats without any treatments (group 2), treated with nasal dro

Spaceflight induces changes in gene expression profiles linked to insulin and estrogen.

Organismal adaptations to spaceflight have been characterized at the molecular level in model organisms, including Drosophila and C. elegans. Here, we extend molecular work to energy metabolism and sex hormone signaling in mice and humans. We found spaceflight induced changes in insulin and estrogen signaling in rodents and humans. Murine changes were most prominent in the liver, where we observed inhibition of insulin and estrogen receptor signaling with concomitant hepatic insulin resistance and steatosis. Based on the metabolic demand, metabolic pathways mediated by insulin and estrogen var

Space flight and the skeleton: lessons for the earthbound.

Loss of bone during extended space flight has long been a concern that could limit the ability of humans to explore the universe. Surprisingly, the available data do not support the concept that weightlessness leads inexorably to a depleted skeleton unable to withstand the stress of a return to a 1-g environment. Nevertheless, some bone loss does occur, especially in those bones most stressed by gravity prior to flight, which provides confirmation of the proposal formulated over a century ago by Julius Wolff that mechanical stress determines the form and function of bone. Although the phenomen

Neural and neuroendocrine adaptations to microgravity and ground-based models of microgravity.

The functional properties of the motor system of humans and non-human primates are readily responsive to microgravity. There is a growing body of evidence that significant adaptations occur in the spinal cord and muscle in response to prolonged exposure to microgravity. Further, there is evidence that the processing of sensory information from the periphery, particularly that input associated with the function of muscle tendons and joints, is significantly altered as a result of prolonged microgravity. We present evidence that the fundamental neural mechanisms that control the relative activit

On-Slide Preparation of Caenorhabditis elegans toward Quantitative, High-Resolution LA-ICP-TOF Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Metal homeostasis is essential for biological functions and has been implicated in many diseases. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-TOF-MS) imaging is a powerful tool for spatially resolved elemental imaging in heterogeneous tissues. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a well-established model organism for metal biology research. However, there have been few reports on mass spectrometry-based metal imaging of C. elegans due to challenges in sample preparation for high-resolution and quantitative analysis. In this study, we establ

Neonatal Health Risks Among Children of Female Military Aviation Officers.

INTRODUCTION: The aviation occupational environment may expose a developing fetus to intermittent hypoxia, high gravitational force, toxic materials, loud noise, high frequency vibrations, and galactic cosmic radiation. These exposures in animal models are associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. We sought to investigate whether a maternal military aviation career was associated with adverse neonatal health outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of female officer's children born in the Military Health System from October 2002 to December 2019. Female fixed-wing aviatio

Applications of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry to the Identification of Parasites and Arthropod Vectors of Human Diseases.

Arthropod vectors and parasites are identified morphologically or, more recently, by molecular methods. Both methods are time consuming and require expertise and, in the case of molecular methods, specific devices. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) identification of bacteria has meant a major change in clinical microbiology laboratories because of its simplicity, speed and specificity, and its capacity to identify microorganisms, in some cases, directly from the sample (urine cultures, blood cultures). Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been sh

Elucidating the role of the L-type calcium channel in excitability and energetics in the heart: The ISHR 2020 Research Achievement Award Lecture.

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading health burden worldwide and with the rising rates in obesity and type II diabetes and ongoing effects of long COVID, it is anticipated that the burden of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality will increase. Calcium is essential to cardiac excitation and contraction. The main route for Ca2+ influx is the L-type Ca2+ channel (Cav1.2) and embryos that are homozygous null for the Cav1.2 gene are lethal at day 14 postcoitum. Acute changes in Ca2+ influx through the channel contribute to arrhythmia and sudden death, and chronic increases in intrace

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) induced developmental cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in hatchling chickens: Roles of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) is a perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) substitute. In the current study, potential developmental cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity following HFPO-DA exposure in chicken embryo has been investigated, focusing on the roles of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPARα), the major molecular target in PFOA-induced toxicities. HFPO-DA was exposed to fertile chicken eggs via air cell injection, morphology and function of the target organs (heart and liver) in hatchlings were investigated with histopathology and electrocardiography, and the seru

Analysis of the metabolic pathways affected by hot-humid or dry climate based on fecal metabolomics coupled with serum metabolic changes in broiler chickens.

Air temperature and relative humidity (RH) are 2 important climatic elements that affect animal welfare and health. The prevailing hot and humid or dry climate is one of the major constraints for optimum poultry production, especially in the tropics and subtropical regions. Many studies have suggested that exposure to hot-humid or dry climate is associated with a high risk of metabolic imbalance; however, the underlying metabolic changes caused by low or high RH climate is not yet well understood. Therefore, we used a comprehensive ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quad
