Stasis dermatitis commonly occurs in older age. It is caused by venous hypertension resulting from retrograde flow due to incompetent venous valves, valve destruction, or obstruction of the venous system. Further tissue changes arise from an inflammatory process mediated by metalloproteinases, which are up-regulated by ferric ion from extravasated red blood cells. Stasis dermatitis presents initially as poorly demarcated erythematous plaques of the lower legs bilaterally, classically involving the medial malleolus. It is one of the spectrum of cutaneous findings that may result from chronic ve

BACKGROUND: Xanthelasma is the most common type of cutaneous xanthoma and often occurs on the eyelids. Xanthoma has been reported to be high … h dietary cholesterol promoted xanthoma formation on the napex. Microscopic examination showed that foam cells laden with cholesterol deposits accumulated around the dermal capillaries and cutaneous appendages within the skin of the napex.
CONCLUSION: These findings indicate a critical role for a high-cholesterol diet in the dysregulation of lipoprotein met …

Coronary artery disease is the result of atherosclerotic changes to the coronary arterial wall, comprising endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and deposition of lipid-rich macrophage foam cells. Certain high-risk atherosclerotic plaques are vulnerable to disruption, leading to rupture, thrombosis and the clinical sequelae of acute coronary syndrome. Though recognised as the gold standard for evaluating the presence, distribution and severity of atherosclerotic lesions, invasive coronary angiography is incapable of identifying non-stenotic, vulnerable plaques that are responsible for…

Platinum (Pt)-based catalysts used in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) usually suffer from low catalytic activity, slow kinetics of methanol oxidation and poor electrochemical stability. This is mainly due to the toxic effect of carbon monoxide and inefficient use of the Pt catalysts. To address these problems, we immobilized Pt nanoparticles with diameters of 4-6 nm onto the three-dimensional (3D) interpenetrating graphene networks (graphene hydrogel or G-Gel) deposited in the micropores of nickel foam (NF). In this Pt/G-Gel/NF composite catalyst, nearly all the Pt nanoparticles are accessi

We report a 48-year-old woman with a pleural pseudoneoplasm requiring different diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. After initial presentation with increasing dyspnoea, temperature, dry cough, and interscapular pain diagnostic processing showed a large mediastinal mass with marked pleural effusion and high metabolic activity in the 18F-FDG-PET/CT. Extensive CT-guided biopsy of the tumor reaching from the visceral pleura into the right upper lobe revealed no malignancy, but a marked inflammatory tissue reaction containing foam cells. Initial empiric antibiotic therapy was temporarily success…

Deficiency of ABCA1 causes high density lipoprotein deficiency and macrophage foam cell formation in Tangier disease. ABCA1 was also postulated to mediate the secretion of IL-1beta from monocytes and macrophages. We investigated the contribution of ABCA1 to IL-1beta secretion from human monocytes and macrophages of normal donors and Tangier disease patients. Neither an anti-ABCA1 antisense oligonucleotide nor ABCA1 deficiency interfered with LPS-induced secretion of IL-1beta from full blood or freshly isolated monocytes. By contrast, anti-ABCA1 antisense oligonucleotides decreased the LPS-indu

We describe the clinical findings over the first 18 years of a patient with a novel phenotype for galactosialidosis, the storage disease produced by the combined deficiency of beta-galactosidase and neuraminidase. Clinical findings in the first few months included somewhat unusual appearance and hepatosplenomegaly. Dysostosis multiplex was evident by age 2 1/2 years. Mitral and aortic valvular disease appeared over the next few years and cardiac disease has become the most important clinical problem. Foam cells were present in the bone marrow, and vacuolated lymphocytes were present in the per…

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory and immunometabolic disease in which plaque macrophages integrate lipid-derived danger signals, metabolic stress and cell-death cues to shape foam-cell formation, necrotic-core expansion, fibrous-cap integrity and plaque vulnerability. Moving beyond the conventional M1/M2 paradigm, this review conceptualizes plaque macrophages as dynamic functional states organized around interconnected programs of inflammatory sensing, immunometabolic remodeling, lipid uptake and cholesterol efflux, efferocytosis and inflammation resolution, and intracellular quality

Cholesterol-laden macrophage foam cells are a hallmark of atherosclerosis. For that reason, cholesterol metabolism in macrophages has attracted considerable scrutiny, particularly the mechanisms by which macrophages unload surplus cholesterol (a process referred to as "cholesterol efflux"). Many studies of cholesterol efflux in macrophages have focused on the role of ABC transporters in moving cholesterol onto high-density lipoproteins (HDLs), but other mechanisms for cholesterol efflux likely exist. We hypothesized that macrophages have the capacity to unload cholesterol directly onto adjacen…

Diagnosis of allograft dysfunction relies on the assessment of arterial lesions. This study was designed to evaluate the prognostic significance of common specific vascular lesions in acute allograft rejection. Renal allograft biopsies (n = 111) with acute cellular rejection were scored for endarteritis, mononuclear cell adherence to endothelial cells, endothelial activation, fibrinoid necrosis, foam cells, and intimal fibrosis. These vascular lesions and other classic histologic features were correlated with outcome. Rejection with endarteritis (found in 54% of biopsies) was less responsive t…

The posttraumatic processes of Wallerian degeneration of nerves have been illuminated in detail. The dynamics of the breakdown of axons and the myelin sheaths of nerve fibers has been established, as have been the periods of the changes in the composition of myelin, and the reactive changes in the Schwann cells and the connective tissue structures in the makeup of the nerve as well as the formation of "foam" cells have been described. The controversial questions which have been raised in these studies regarding the role of the cellular elements (the Schwann cells, the endoneurial fibroblasts,

Animal morphogenesis involves complex tissue deformation processes, which require tight control over tissue rheology. Yet, it remains insufficiently understood how tissue rheology results from the interplay between cellular packing and forces, such as cortical tension or cell-cell adhesion. We follow a biomimetic approach to study this interplay, using oil droplets with tunable adhesion strength to mimic adhesive cells. We expose emulsions to cyclic shear and use a geometric method to quantify their rheology using only imaging data. We find that emulsions made of two droplet types change yield

A typical case of eruptive xanthomas secondary to untreated type 2 diabetes mellitus complicated with severe hyperlipidemia was reported. The patient had a history of acute pancreatitis one month before the onset of xanthomas. Laboratory tests revealed high levels of triglycerides, cholesterol, blood glucose, and acute inflammatory markers. Histopathological examination showed the foam cells in the dermis. After interventions, including a low-fat and low-carbohydrate diet, anti-diabetic therapy and lipid-lowering therapy, the patient's skin lesions partially resolved within two months. At the …

Natto, known for its high vitamin K content, has been demonstrated to suppress atherosclerosis in large-scale clinical trials through a yet-unknown mechanism. In this study, we used a previously reported mouse model, transplanting the bone marrow of mice expressing infra-red fluorescent protein (iRFP) into LDLR-deficient mice, allowing unique and non-invasive observation of foam cells expressing iRFP in atherosclerotic lesions. Using 3 natto strains, we meticulously examined the effects of varying vitamin K levels on atherosclerosis in these mice. Notably, high vitamin K natto significantly re…
