MRI abnormalities of the anterior temporal lobe: a new indicator of congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Abnormalities of the anterior part of the temporal lobe (abnormal and swollen white matter, cysts, and focal enlargement of the anterior part of the inferior horn- either alone or more often in combination) suggest congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. This is not widely known. These can be seen in neonatal period and they continue to persist in later life.

Abscessed porous polyethylene (Medpor) orbital implant: a case report.

We report the evolution of clinical features of orbital implant infection in a 42-year-old man. Despite appropriate treatment recurrent conjunctival dehiscence could not be prevented. Explanation of the implant resulted in complete resolution of symptoms. Histopathological examination confirmed focal necrotising acute inflammation with the presence of colonies of the organism in the deep substance of the implant.

Acute mediastinitis.

Mediastinitis is not a new disease, however, the occurrence was rare especially in children. Focal infection, which considered to be insignificant, can result in diffuse dissemination involving mediastinum leading to fatal condition. This paper reported a case of mediastinitis with very critical condition. Fast and accurate diagnosis as well as adequate antibiotic treatment saved the patient without surgical intervention.

Histologic, histochemical, and immunohistochemical changes in buffalo liver with cystic echinococcosis.

The present study aimed to evaluate the histologic, histochemical, and immunohistochemical changes in buffalo livers with cystic echinococcosis. Noninfected and infected livers were collected from the freshly slaughtered buffalo at the Aligarh abattoir. Small pieces of both infected and noninfected livers (n = 5) were cut and processed for histologic and histochemical studies. Immunohistochemistry was performed using rabbit anti-CD3, CD19, and CD117 antibodies. The results revealed the presence of brood capsules and germinal and laminated membranes surrounded by a fibrous adventitial layer, fo

CCL2/MCP-1 controls parasite burden, cell infiltration, and mononuclear activation during acute Trypanosoma cruzi infection.

CCL2/MCP-1 has emerged recently as a critical factor in infectious and autoimmune myocarditis. In fact, this chemokine is produced in great amounts in hearts from Trypanosoma cruzi-infected mice and is known to enhance parasite uptake and destruction by macrophages. Herein, we studied the involvement of CCL2 in tissue inflammation and resistance to T. cruzi. Infected CCL2(-/-) mice developed higher parasitemias and died earlier than WT mice. Close to their death, T. cruzi-infected CCL2(-/-) presented greater amounts of TNF, IFN-gamma, and IL-10 in plasma than WTs and clinical signs of systemic

[Epidemiological surveillance on natural-borne infections in the Ulyanovsk region].

The analysis of natural foci of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and tick-borne borreliosis on the territory of the Ulyanovsk region is presented. Reduced rat control interventions result in a wide spread of these and other infections with natural focality. Monitoring of natural foci of HFRS, tick-borne borreliosis and arbovirus infections, their typing and determination of main reservoirs are the most promising among epidemiological surveillance methods.

[Encephalitis due to listeria monocytogenes: a complication of immunosuppressive therapy (author's transl)].

Two cases of encephalitis due to Listeria monocytogenes with lethal outcome are presented. The infection occurred during immunosuppressive treatment for panarteritis nodosa and sarcoidosis, respectively. The pathological-anatomical findings were a diffuse purulent meningoencephalitis in the first case and a focal rhombencephalitis with necrotizing inflammation of brainstem and cerebellum in the second one. Listerial infections of the adult are gaining increasing importance as severe complications of immunosuppressive treatment.

Coxsackie A9 focal encephalitis associated with acute infantile hemiplegia and porencephaly.

The factors underlying acute infantile hemiplegia are seldom identified. Coxsackie A9 focal encephalitis was documented for the first time in a 3-month-old infant with fever, hemiconvulsions, and hemiplegia followed by a static motor deficit and epilepsy. It has been suggested that the acute infantile hemiplegia associated with encephalitis results from an arteritis or venous sinus thrombosis with subsequent cerebral infarction. However, this was not observed in our patient. Rather, a series of brain scans, computerized tomograms, and a cerebral angiogram clearly documented the evolution of a

Recurrent Transcortical Motor Aphasia-Another CNS Infectious Syndrome Associated with Herpes Virus Infection.

Herpes simplex encephalitis is an acute/subacute illness that causes both general and focal signs of cerebral dysfunction with fever, headache, and confusion as cardinal features. Recurrent herpes simplex meningitis, also known as Mollaret's meningitis, is another manifestation of central nervous system herpetic infection with recurrent episodes of fever, headache, and nuchal rigidity associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evidence of active herpes simplex infection. Bell's palsy is yet another manifestation of a herpes virus infection in at least some reported cases documented by CSF analy

Odontogenic infection and pachymeningitis of the cavernous sinus.

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis is a rare inflammatory process that causes thickening of the dura mater. Most cases are idiopathic, but it can result from many inflammatory and infective conditions. We present a case of pachymeningitis of the cavernous sinus, the aetiology of which may have been dental.

[Mycobacteria in the development of periodontal foci of infection].

A total of 162 samples of material from the periodontal foci of infection were examined microbiologically and morphologically to detect mycobacteria and their biologically changed variants. The regularities of the pathologic process development in periodontal tissues of subjects without tuberculosis were found to fully conform to the current concept of a latent tuberculous infection. The periodontal foci of infection may be regarded as reservoirs of persistent mycobacteria, whose main form, L variant, was detected in 71.6% of cases. Clinical and morphologic manifestations of periodontitis depe

Isolation and characterization of a new goose orthoreovirus causing liver and spleen focal necrosis in geese, China.

Since July 2020, an infectious disease characterized by liver and spleen white focal necrosis has been spreading widely through geese farms in many regions of China. A novel goose orthoreovirus (GRV), designated GRV-GD2020, was isolated from the liver and spleen of dead geese. Phylogenetic analysis and sequence comparison revealed that all the genes of GRV-GD2020 clustered with other waterfowl-origin orthoreovirus. However, the gene constellation of GRV-GD2020 was not similar to that of any particular strain. Instead, the genomic segments of GRV-GD2020 showed 27.5-97.3% similarities to that of

The conduction system of the heart in mice chronically infected with Trypanosoma cruzi: histopathological lesions and electrocardiographic correlations.

Chronic focal and diffuse myocarditis with interstitial fibrosis developed in Swiss outbred mice and in the inbred AKR and A/J strains of mice which were chronically infected with several Trypanosoma cruzi strains belonging to three biological types (Type I, II and III). High incidence of electrocardiographic changes with predominance of intraventricular conduction disturbances, 1st. and 2nd. degree AV block, arrhythmias, comparable with those found in human Chagas' disease, were also present. Morphological study of the conduction tissue of the heart revealed inflammatory and fibrotic changes.

An Update on Viral Infection-Associated Collapsing Glomerulopathy.

The COVID-19 era has been a reminder to clinicians around the world of the important role that viral infections play in promoting glomerular disease. Several viral infections including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and parvovirus B19 can cause podocyte injury and present with a collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) variant of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis or minimal change disease. CG associated with COVID-19 has been termed COVID-19-associated nephropathy due to its striking resemblance to HIV-associated

Diplopia and acute rectus muscle palsy as symptoms of an infected follicular cyst of a maxillary right third molar: a case report.

Severely impacted third molars have a high risk of developing a dentigerous cyst. Dental cysts in the maxilla can cause acute infection of the maxillary sinus that can involve the orbital cavity. Possible complications of infections of the orbital cavity are eyesight reduction, including blindness, and disseminated infections, including brain abscesses. This article reports on a 53-year-old male patient with diplopia caused by acute rectus inferior muscle palsy as symptoms of an empyema of the maxillary right sinus. An infected follicular cyst due to the impacted and displaced maxillary right
