In eight patients with folic acid malabsorption the malabsorption was reversed only when a combination of either 250 mg. of lyophilized human jejunal juice or 5 g. of lyophilized calf jejunum with 5 mg. of synthetic folic acid was fed; calf liver was ineffective. The factors in calf jejunum that re-established folic acid absorption were heat-stable and did not form polyglutamyl folates on previous incubation with folic acid.

A simplified microbiological assay for determining the folate content of red cells is described. As in previously reported methods Lactobacillus casei is used as test organism but two modifications are introduced. First, haemolysis is carried out in water containing 1 g.% of ascorbic acid; secondly, haemolysates are not incubated before the assay. Using this assay, recovery of pteroylglutamic acid added in two different concentrations to five different whole blood samples was 97.0 +/- 1.9 S.E. % and 106.1 +/- 4.7 S.E. % respectively. The coefficient of variation of the assay was between 11.2 a

PURPOSE: Bariatric surgery (BS), an effective treatment for severe obesity and its comorbidities, may result in micronutrient and vitamin deficiencies. This monocentric prospective observational study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a specifically designed vitamin/mineral formula (Bariatrifast, BIOITALIA S.r.l., Italy) for preventing and treating micronutrient deficiencies in patients submitted to BS.
METHODS: Twenty patients with severe obesity (mean weight and BMI: 123.5 kg (range 88-174) and 43.3 kg/m2 (range 37-54) respectively) underwent BS (10 vertical sleeve gastrectomy VSG, 10 Rou

Micronutrient deficiencies, such as iron, folic acid, and vitamins C and D, are currently prevalent due to inadequate consumption of natural food sources, namely raw vegetables and fruits. This deficiency is compounded by the growing reliance on synthetic nutraceuticals and processed food, which exhibit poor absorbency within the gastrointestinal tract. Scientific studies consistently indicate that naturally prepared whole foods are superior in terms of nutrient absorption compared to processed and synthetic supplements. To address this issue, we utilized FDA-approved tragacanth gum (TG) in th

Risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) is determined by genetic and environmental factors, among which folate status appears to play a key role. However, the precise nature of the link between low folate status and NTDs is poorly understood, and it remains unclear how folic acid prevents NTDs. We investigated the effect of folate level on risk of NTDs in splotch (Sp(2)(H)) mice, which carry a mutation in Pax3. Dietary folate restriction results in reduced maternal blood folate, elevated plasma homocysteine and reduced embryonic folate content. Folate deficiency does not cause NTDs in wild-type mic

The aim of the present investigation was to search for a reduction in birth prevalence estimates of 52 selected types of congenital anomalies, associated with folic acid fortification programs in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. The material included 3,347,559 total births in 77 hospitals of the three countries during the 1982-2007 period: 596,704 births (17 hospitals) in Chile, 1,643,341 (41 hospitals) in Argentina, and 1,107,514 (19 hospitals) in Brazil. We compared pre- and post-fortification rates within each hospital and the resulting Prevalence Rate Ratios (PRRs) were pooled by country. Sta

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Acute kidney injury (AKI) could progress to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the AKI-CKD transition has major clinical significance. A growing body of evidence has unveiled the role of pyroptosis in kidney injury. We postulate that GSDMD and GSDME exert cumulative effects on the AKI-CKD transition by modulating different cellular responses.
METHODS: We established an AKI-CKD transition model induced by folic acid in wildtype (WT), Gsdmd-/-, Gsdme-/-, and Gsdmd-/-Gsdme-/- mice. Tubular injury, renal fibrosis and inflammatory responses were evaluated. In vitro studies

"Anemias beyond iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies" covers a wide array of everything which lies beyond commonly seen anemias caused by deficiencies of three micronutrients. Although anemias due to deficiencies of iron, B12, and folate are common in daily practice and account for at least one-third of anemia etiologies in older adults, it is not uncommon to encounter other nutritional and toxin-induced underproduction anemias. The combination of thorough clinical examination, careful peripheral blood smear review, and judicious selection of supporting laboratory studies is typically su

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia remains a significant public health concern among pregnant women, particularly in rural areas of low- and middle-income countries. Despite routine antenatal care services and iron-folic acid supplementation programs, adherence to supplementation and effective anemia prevention remain challenging. Understanding how pregnant women and healthcare providers experience and respond to these challenges is essential for strengthening anemia prevention efforts in rural maternal health services.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences and support needs

STUDY QUESTION: Are maternal folate and vitamin B12 concentrations associated with first-trimester placental growth?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Maternal folate concentrations and commencement of folic acid supplements prior to conception, as compared to following conception, are positively associated with first-trimester placental volume (PV), whereas no associations were found for maternal vitamin B12 concentrations.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Besides the protective effect of folic acid supplement use against neural tube defects and other adverse birth outcomes, the preconceptional commencement of folic a

OBJECTIVE: Diet is increasingly recognized as a potentially modifiable factor influencing the onset and outcomes of psychiatric disorders. Whereas, previous research has shown long-term schizophrenia is associated with various nutritional deficiencies, this meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence and extent of nutritional deficits in first-episode psychosis (FEP).
METHOD: A search of electronic databases conducted in July 2017 identified 28 eligible studies, examining blood levels of 6 vitamins and 10 minerals across 2612 individuals: 1221 individuals with FEP and 1391 control subject

Vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency is often associated with affective disorders mainly of the depressive type. We report a case of a 42-year-old woman with a mood disorder with mixed depressed/manic features that was due to vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency. The psychopathology developed over a five-year period without hematologic or other overt clinical characteristics of pernicious anemia. Replacement treatment with vitamin B(12) and folate was rapidly followed by full clinical remission, electroencephalographic normalization and neuropsychological improvement. At a one-year follow-up thi

BACKGROUND: Folic acid supplementation in those with a low vitamin B-12 intake or status may have adverse effects. These effects are unknown with regard to birth outcome in pregnant Indian women who are routinely supplemented with high doses of folic acid.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine the association of unbalanced vitamin B-12 and total folate (folic acid supplement + dietary folate) intakes during pregnancy with outcomes in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants.
DESIGN: This was a prospective observational cohort study of 1838 pregnant women in South India. Low intake of dietar
