Effect of glucagon in macronutrient self-selection: glucagon-enhanced protein intake.

The effect of glucagon on macronutrient selection was studied using rats. Continuous infusion of glucagon (5 ng/microliters/h) into the lateral cerebral ventricle increased total caloric intake and protein selection, and decreased carbohydrate selection. Continuous infusion of glucagon subcutaneously induced similar changes. Since a hyperglycemic response to the intracranial injection of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) disappeared in rats either with bilateral lesions of the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) (17) or with acquired (21) and congenital (10) blindness, and bilateral lesions of th

Behavioral conditioning and experimental motion-induced sickness.

Adult male squirrel monkeys were the subjects of experiments conducted to determine whether or not repeated exposures to sickness-inducing horizontal rotation would result in behavioral conditioning of emetic responses. The development of conditioned food aversion and feeding suppression as a consequence of pre- and postrotation eating was quantified. It was concluded that neither instrumental conditioning nor classical conditioning were valid alternative hypotheses for the occurrence of repeated vomiting episodes over a period of ten daily exposures to motion. Conditioned aversion to fresh ba

Vasopressin and ethanol preference. II. Altered preference in two strains of diabetes insipidus rats and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus mice.

In the first paper of this series, the influence of a single gene (di) for vasopressin deficiency on ethanol intake in rats was demonstrated. We studied preference for concentrations of ethanol between 2.2 and 10 percent versus tap water in Brattleboro rats homozygous for diabetes insipidus (di/di), heterozygous (di/+) or normal (+/+). The di/di rats, totally lacking in vasopressin, had greatly reduced preference scores for all concentrations of ethanol. Their intake of ethanol (g/day) was higher than heterozygotes or normals, but only when 2.2 percent ethanol was offered as a choice. Treatmen

Perceptions and Acceptability of a Low Phytate: Iron Molar Ratio Biofortified Bean and Sweet Potato Dish Among Pregnant Women in Rural Uganda.

Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) disproportionately affects pregnant women who reside in low-income countries because they predominantly consume staple legumes and tubers such as conventional common beans (CCBs) and white-fleshed sweet potatoes (WFSPs). Such staples are either low in iron or rich in iron absorption inhibitors such as phytates. To fight IDA, a high-iron-biofortified common bean (IBCB) was introduced in Uganda. However, there is limited knowledge about its acceptability among pregnant women. This experimental crossover study determined the sensory acceptability of a low

Obesogenic Behavior and Weight-Based Stigma in Popular Children's Movies, 2012 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Obesity-promoting content and weight-stigmatizing messages are common in child-directed television programming and advertisements, and 1 study found similar trends in G- and PG-rated movies from 2006 to 2010. Our objective was to examine the prevalence of such content in more recent popular children's movies. METHODS: Raters examined 31 top-grossing G- and PG-rated movies released from 2012 to 2015. For each 10-minute segment (N = 302) and for movies as units, raters documented the presence of eating-, activity-, and weight-related content observed on-screen. To assess interrater

Effects of insect infestation on rodent-mediated dispersal of Quercus aliena: results from field and enclosure experiments.

Rodents influence plant establishment and regeneration by functioning as both seed predators and dispersers. However, these rodent-plant interactions can vary significantly due to various environmental conditions and the activity of other insect seed predators. Here, we use a combination of both field and enclosure (i.e. individual cage and semi-natural enclosure) experiments, to determine whether rodents can distinguish sound seeds from those infested with insects. We also demonstrate how such responses to insects are influenced by food abundance and other environmental factors. We presented

Food for cancer health: the impact of a culturally tailored food voucher intervention on food insecurity and quality of life among Latino/a/e/x patients with cancer.

PURPOSE: Food assistance interventions that are culturally tailored, minimize stigma, and promote self-efficacy are needed to promote uptake among low-income, racial, and ethnic minoritized people with cancer. We developed a culturally tailored food voucher intervention and tested its associations with food insecurity (primary outcome) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), financial toxicity, and cancer treatment adherence (exploratory outcomes). METHODS: Between July 2023 and August 2023, we recruited low-income, racial, and ethnic minoritized adults > 18 years of age with cancer recei

Paraventricular opioids alter intake of high-fat but not high-sucrose diet depending on diet preference in a binge model of feeding.

Previous work from our laboratory indicates that when rats are given a choice between a high-fat and a high-sucrose diet, opioid blockade with naltrexone (NTX) in a reward-related site (central amygdala) inhibits intake of the preferred diet only, whereas NTX injected into a homeostasis-related site, such as the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), inhibits intake of both diets. However, other work suggests that opioids increase intake of fat specifically. The present study further investigates the role of PVN opioids in food choices made by calorically-replete animals. We used a binge

Associations of body composition and resting metabolic rate with homeostatic and hedonic components of appetite.

BACKGROUND: While fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), and resting metabolic rate (RMR) influence energy intake, their specific roles as homoeostatic and hedonic drivers of eating-and factors moderating these relationships-are uncertain. This study examined associations of FFM, FM, and RMR with a comprehensive set of appetite-related outcomes in adults. METHODS: 130 participants (58% male; age: 25.0 ± 8.5 years; BMI: 24.0 ± 3.7 kg/m²; mean ± SD) completed assessments of RMR (indirect-calorimetry), body composition (air-displacement plethysmography), energy intake (laboratory-based), appetite-r

Elimination Diets, Not Food Selectivity, Are Associated with Reduced Nutritional Status in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing abnormalities, including food selectivity. Due to the lack of effective causal therapies, alternative approaches such as dietary interventions are increasingly being explored. This study aimed to assess the impact of dietary factors on the nutritional status of children with ASD. Methods: A total of 103 children (75 with ASD and 28 controls) were included. Nutritional status was assessed using bioc

A Novel Food-Derived Particle Enhances Sweet and Salty Taste Responses in Mice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Reducing the dietary intake of sugar and salt is considered a key strategy for preventing the onset and progression of lifestyle-related diseases. However, these dietary interventions often compromise the taste of foods, which can reduce patient satisfaction. To address this challenge, we focused on novel food-derived particles (NFPs; patent number P7383867) consisting of lipid, α-cyclodextrin, and xanthan gum formulated as an emulsion with excellent retention and diffusion properties. METHODS: Here, we investigated the effects of NFPs on the taste responses of mice. R

Taste Sensitivity of Elderly People Is Associated with Quality of Life and Inadequate Dietary Intake.

Aging has been implicated in the alteration of taste acuity. Diet can affect taste sensitivity. We aimed to investigate the types of tastes altered in elderly Korean people and factors associated with taste alteration in relation to dietary intake and other factors. Elderly participants (≥65 years) and young adults were assessed to determine their recognition thresholds (RT) for sweet, salty, bitter, sour, and umami tastes. Elderly participants were further surveyed for dietary intake and non-nutritional factors. Five taste RTs were correlated with age, but only four taste RTs, except sweetnes

Scurvy presenting with limp and weakness: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Scurvy is one of the oldest diseases known to mankind. Although presently rare in the developed world, scurvy was a common potentially fatal disease. In recent times, the most common risk factors for scurvy include alcoholism, low socioeconomic status, and severely poor nutrition or dietary restriction secondary to psychiatric illness or developmental disorders. Our case demonstrates the importance of having a high index of clinical suspicion of an uncommon disease in developed countries and emphasizes the necessity of a dietary screening that could potentially reduce extensive wor

Spatial delayed nonmatching-to-sample performances in long-living Ames dwarf mice.

Ames dwarf mice have an extended lifespan by comparison with normal mice. Behavioral testing has revealed that sometimes Ames dwarf mice also evince superior performances relative to normal mice, but in other cases they do not. In this experiment, Ames dwarf and normal mice were compared on a T-maze test and on a delayed nonmatching-to-sample variant of a T-maze test. On the simple T-maze, Ames dwarf and normal mice committed comparable numbers of errors. On the nonmatching-to-sample task, normal mice mastered the discrimination by the end of the experiment while Ames dwarf mice did not. The a

The role of parenting in the relationship between childhood eating problems and broader behaviour problems.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established that childhood feeding and eating problems are often related to other behavioural difficulties. Parenting practices have been implicated in both eating behaviour and broader behaviour problems. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between eating and behaviour problems could be explained in part by parenting style and practices. METHODS: Seventy-seven mothers of 3- to 8-year-old children completed measures of children's eating behaviours, behaviour problems, parenting style and feeding practices. RESULTS: Eating behaviours

Food aversions and cravings during early pregnancy: association with nausea and vomiting.

The prospective cohort study examined whether Ecuadorian women with early pregnancy nausea and vomiting (NVP) are more likely to develop food aversions and cravings, and if so, whether the specific foods identified as aversive or craved are the same as those predicted by the popular maternal-embryo protection hypothesis (MEPH). Consistent with MEPH predictions, women with NVP were more likely to report increased odor sensitivity and aversions for some predicted "toxic" foods and more likely to crave fruits. However, other hypothesis predictions were not supported. The relationship of food aver

Maternal deprivation induces depressive-like behaviours only in female rats.

Maternal deprivation (MD) has been developed to study the effects of early adverse experiences on behaviour and neurobiology. It has been proposed to represent a potential animal model of major depression. The purpose of our study was to examine the responses induced by MD in male and female adult Long-Evans rats in tasks designed to explore depressive-like behaviours (forced swimming test (FST), repeated open space swim test (OSST), sucrose solution consumption) and in the novel object recognition and object location tasks. A consistent sexual dimorphism was observed in the responses of male
