Genetics of digital phenotypes of keel bone in layer chickens and correlations with keel bone fractures and deviations.

BACKGROUND: Poultry is a global industry with laying hens that are genetically optimized for high egg yield. Keel bone fractures can affect up to 80% of laying hens, posing welfare and production problems. Therefore, genetic selection to reduce keel fractures is important. However, the lack of a reliable, automated, and heritable phenotypes for keel bones makes this a challenging task. The aim of this study was to (1) develop automated analyses of radiographic images to phenotype keel bones, and (2) investigate whether the proposed phenotypes are heritable and genetically correlated with the p

Prevalence of Morphometric Vertebral Fractures After Bariatric Surgery and Its Relationship with Bone Mineral Density and Bone Markers.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery (BS) can lead to bone loss and an increased fracture risk. METHODS: To determine the morphometric vertebral fracture (MVF) prevalence, and its relationship with bone mineral density (BMD), and biomarker's turnover after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG), we analyzed post-surgery X-rays of the spine in 80 patients (88% female, 51% RYGB, age 41.2 [6.8] years) from 117 participants' retrospective cohort (1-2 years, >2 and <5 years, and >5 years). We still analyzed body composition and BMD by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and bone paramet

Forearm Fractures in Overweight-Obese Children and Adolescents: A Matter of Bone Density, Bone Geometry or Body Composition?

Forearm fractures in children and adolescents are associated with increased body mass index (BMI). This bone site is non-weight-bearing and therefore is appropriate to explore the effect of BMI on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry, avoiding the confounding effect of increased weight-associated mechanical loading. The aim of this review was to summarize available evidence on bone indices and body composition assessed by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) or dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the forearm level in overweight (Ow) or obese (Ob) subjects. We conducted a r

New concept of 3D printed bone clip (polylactic acid/hydroxyapatite/silk composite) for internal fixation of bone fractures.

Open reduction with internal fixation is commonly used for the treatment of bone fractures. However, postoperative infection associated with internal fixation devices (intramedullary nails, plates, and screws) remains a significant complication, and it is technically difficult to fix multiple fragmented bony fractures using internal fixation devices. In addition, drilling in the bone to install devices can lead to secondary fracture, bone necrosis associated with postoperative infection. In this study, we developed bone clip type internal fixation device using three- dimensional (3D) printing

Serum leptin, bone mineral density and the healing of long bone fractures in men with spinal cord injury.

Previously reported fracture rates in patients with spinal cord injury range from 1% to 20%. However, the exact role of spinal cord injury in bone metabolism has not yet been clarified. In order to investigate the effects of serum leptin and bone mineral density on the healing of long bone fractures in men with spinal cord injury, 15 male SCI patients and 15 matched controls were involved in our study. The outcome indicated that at 4 and 8 weeks after bone fracture, callus production in patients with spinal cord injury was lower than that in controls. Besides, bone mineral density was signific

Prior ankle fractures in postmenopausal women are associated with low areal bone mineral density and bone microstructure alterations.

UNLABELLED: In a cross-sectional analysis in postmenopausal women, prior ankle fractures were associated with lower areal bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone alterations compared to no fracture history. Compared to women with forearm fractures, microstructure alterations were of lower magnitude. These data suggest that ankle fractures are another manifestation of bone fragility. INTRODUCTION: Whether ankle fractures represent fragility fractures associated with low areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and/or bone microstructure alterations re

Childhood fractures are associated with decreased bone mass gain during puberty: an early marker of persistent bone fragility?

UNLABELLED: Whether peak bone mass is low among children with fractures remains uncertain. In a cohort of 125 girls followed over 8.5 years, 42 subjects reported 58 fractures. Among those, BMC gain at multiple sites and vertebral bone size at pubertal maturity were significantly decreased. Hence, childhood fractures may be markers of low peak bone mass acquisition and persistent skeletal fragility. INTRODUCTION: Fractures in childhood may result from a deficit in bone mass accrual during rapid longitudinal growth. Whether low bone mass persists beyond this period however remains unknown. MAT

Associations between low levels of serum estradiol, bone density, and fractures among elderly women: the study of osteoporotic fractures.

To evaluate the skeletal effects of endogenous serum estradiol, we measured bone mineral density (BMD) at the calcaneus and radius (single photon absorptiometry) and at the hip and spine (dual x-ray absorptiometry) in 274 women aged 65 yr or more who participated in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. Lateral radiographs of the thoracic and lumbar spine were also taken, and serum was assayed for estradiol. Those who had estradiol levels from 10-25 pg/mL had 4.9%, 9.6%, 7.3%, and 6.8% greater BMD at total hip, calcaneus, proximal radius, and spine than those with levels below 5 pg/mL. After mu

Trabecular bone score beyond bone mineral density for identifying osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a matched case-control study.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective sex- and age-matched case-control study. PURPOSE: To assess bone mineral density (BMD)-trabecular bone score (TBS) discordance and high-burden abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) in patients with radiographically confirmed osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Conventional BMD thresholds may fail to identify all patients with vertebral skeletal fragility, as vertebral fractures can occur despite nonosteoporotic BMD. TBS complements BMD by evaluating trabecular microarchitecture, while AAC may serve as a marker of systemic bon

Fractures are highly correlated with bone density and inversely correlated with bone turnover markers in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis.

Autosomal dominant osteopetrosis (ADO) is a rare osteosclerotic disorder usually caused by missense variants in the CLCN7 gene, which results in impaired osteoclastic bone resorption. Penetrance is incomplete, and disease severity varies widely, even among relatives within the same family. Although ADO can cause visual loss, osteonecrosis, osteomyelitis, and bone marrow failure, the most common complication of ADO is fracture. We are conducting a natural history study to characterize disease progression and determinants of disease severity. We hypothesized that baseline BMD and bone turnover m

Effect of Drugs Used in Pharmacotherapy of Type 2 Diabetes on Bone Density and Risk of Bone Fractures.

This review summarizes the complex relationship between medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and bone health. T2DM patients face an increased fracture risk despite higher bone mineral density; thus, we analyzed the impact of key drug classes, including Metformin, Sulphonylureas, SGLT-2 inhibitors, DPP-4 inhibitors, GLP-1 agonists, and Thiazolidinediones. Metformin, despite promising preclinical results, lacks a clear consensus on its role in reducing fracture risk. Sulphonylureas present conflicting data, with potential neutral effects on bone. SGLT-2 inhibitors seem to have a transient i

An adaptive biodegradable zinc alloy with bidirectional regulation of bone homeostasis for treating fractures and aged bone defects.

Healing of fractures or bone defects is significantly hindered by overactivated osteoclasts and inhibited osteogenesis in patients with abnormal bone metabolism. Current clinical approaches using titanium alloys or stainless steel provide mechanical support but have no biological effects on bone regeneration. Therefore, designing and fabricating degradable metal materials with sufficient mechanical strength and bidirectional regulation of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts is a substantial challenge. Here, this study first reported an adaptive biodegradable Zn-0.8 Mg alloy with bidirectional reg

Fractal analysis of radiographic trabecular bone texture and bone mineral density: two complementary parameters related to osteoporotic fractures.

Trabecular bone microarchitecture and bone mineral density (BMD) are two main factors related to osteoporotic fractures. Currently, however, microarchitecture is not evaluated. We have developed and validated a trabecular bone texture analysis from radiographic images. The objective was to determine if the fractal analysis of texture was able to distinguish osteoporotic fracture groups from control groups, either in vertebrae, hip, or wrist fractures, and to determine if this indicator and BMD were independent and complementary. In this cross-sectional unicenter case-control population study i

Osteonecrosis and spontaneous fractures following renal transplantation. A longitudinal study of radiological bone changes and metacarpal bone mass.

Seventy-seven renal transplant (RT) recipients were studied radiologically with regard to bone lesions and metacarpal bone mass, at the time of and after renal transplantation. An increased incidence of rarefaction of the spine, a reduced metacarpal bone mass and an increased frequency of subperiosteal erosions were found at the time of transplantation in RT patients who subsequently developed osteonecrosis or spontaneous fractures as compared with RT patients who did not develop these bone complications. During the years after RT an increase in rarefaction of the spine, in subperiosteal erosi
