OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Management of frontal sinus disease may require drill-out of bone in the frontal recess for access, ventilation, and drainage of the sinus cavity; removal of osteitic foci; or resection of neoplastic tissue. Technological advances, particularly burrs with angles of 70 degrees and stereotactic navigational imaging, offer new opportunities to provide access and minimize trauma. The preliminary study evaluates the safety and efficacy of such minimally invasive approaches.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: The authors describe the use of a 70-degree diamond burr

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasonic bone cutting is a new surgical technique used in dentistry to section hard tissues without damaging adjacent soft t … ort III osteotomy for the treatment of Crouzon syndrome in two patients, 3. to cut the parietal and frontal bone in 30 cases of craniofaciostenosis. The integrity of soft tissues and surgical time was evaluated.
RESULTS: Functional results were good without any soft tissue damage appreciated. The overall operative time, however, was increased.

This case report on one stage surgical treatment of meningoencephalocele offers the opportunity for a revision of the most recent trends expressed by other authors on this topic. Surgical technique involved a system of rigid fixations by means of microplates which, according to our experience in other cases, is particularly advisable in pediatric age. We find that the simultaneous utilization of calvarial bone grafts facilitates a better reconstruction of the cranial base, and also offers greater stability in results.

BACKGROUND: Defects of the frontal region are mostly caused by the ablation of tumors. When the treatment of such a defect cannot be achieved by the approximation of its margins, some of the solutions may alter the form or the continuity of the frontal aesthetic unit.
METHODS: With the intent of reconstructing frontal defects with proper skin, a musculocutaneous island flap of the frontal belly of the occipitofrontalis muscle based on the supratrochlearis or the supraorbitalis vessels was planned for a V-Y application in a single procedure. It was used in 31 patients.
RESULTS: The treated fr

The skull is essential for protecting the brain from damage, and birth defects involving disorganization of skull bones are common. However, the developmental trajectories and molecular etiologies by which many craniofacial phenotypes arise remain poorly understood. Here, we report a novel skull defect in ciliopathic Fuz mutant mice in which only a single bone pair encases the forebrain, instead of the usual paired frontal and parietal bones. Through genetic lineage analysis, we show that this defect stems from a massive expansion of the neural crest-derived frontal bone. This expansion occurs…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to report on radiographic features of the cranial vault abnormalities frequently seen but not yet described in detail in patients with Klinefelter syndrome.
SUBJECTS: Our studies comprised 72 patients with Klinefelter syndrome and 47,XXY karyotype. The majority of the patients were young between the ages of 16 to 28 years.
METHODS: Plain skull radiographs were taken in the frontal and lateral projections.
RESULTS: Several abnormalities were observed on skull radiographs of the Klinefelter patients. The most frequent was a premature fusion of the coron

INTRODUCTION: Frontal sinus surgery is among the most technically demanding areas in rhinology due to the complex anatomy of the frontal recess and proximity to critical structures such as the orbit and anterior cranial fossa. Although endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is the standard for most sinonasal pathologies, the frontal osteoplastic flap (OPF) remains important in select clinical scenarios.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of OPF in current rhinologic practice by presenting a retrospective case series and reviewing contemporary literature.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted

A previously healthy young man presented to hospital with severe traumatic brain injury following a motor vehicle collision. Within 24 hours of admission, and despite antibiotic coverage, he developed a fever. On the second day, the source of infection was discovered to be purulent pneumococcal meningitis. At 48 hours post-accident, he developed brain-stem death without evidence of raised intracranial pressure or trans-tentorial herniation. Initial CT scans of the head were essentially normal, but early repeat scans revealed evidence of pneumocephalus and possible frontal bone fracture. Curren…

Forty male brown bear heads were non-destructively analyzed by computed tomography. Skull, frontal, and cranial cavity volumes were measured … part of the cranial cavity and the orbital region, and protruded into the zygomatic process of the frontal bone. The cranial cavity increased slowly from 0 years, with continued growth beyond 11 years at a reduced rate. The cranial cavity-to-skull ratio decreased because the skull volume significantly increased. Both the frontal sinus and cranial cavity volum …

The frontal sinuses make an important contribution to normal forehead and glabellar contour. This study was designed to test our clinical impression that early fronto-orbital ("frontal bone") advancement could have an adverse effect on frontal sinus development and consequently on forehead aesthetics. A retrospective study was conducted on 11 patients who had undergone fronto-orbital advancement and also had a long period of follow-up at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at New York University. The longitudinal cephalometric data were compared with unoperated controls. With one e…

Macroscopic and histological parameters are considered in an analysis of bone formation in the supraorbital region of macaques (Macaca mulatta), baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis), and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus). Results indicate that post-natal osteogenesis of the supraorbital segment of the frontal bone in these primates occurs as a cyclic phenomenon that coincides wth dental eruption patterns.

Objective Sinonasal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a very rare condition. NHL located specifically in the frontal sinus is even rarer with only 14 cases in the literature reported to date. A unique case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the frontal sinus that presented first and was treated as suspected Pott puffy tumor is presented along with a review of the literature. Case Report A 69-year-old white man with a history of sinusitis and two recent endoscopic sinus surgeries presented with enlargement of his right forehead. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images revealed a dense op

We treated a 6-year-old child for hyperteleorbitism. We performed a facial bipartition steel wire osteosynthesis of the frontal bone. After 7 years we observed two episodes of pneumococcal meningitis, which were treated with intravenous antibiotic, resulting in a prompt recovery. The computed tomographic scan and nuclear magnetic resonance image showed the steel wire included in the frontal sinus and in contact with the dura mater. Removal of the wire and suture of the dura allowed prompt recovery.

PURPOSE: The advantages of rigid fixation over wire osteosynthesis are well established for the management of facial trauma. Miniplates in the frontozygomatic area are traditionally applied to the lateral face of the orbital rim, but with some undesirable effects, such as palpability, visibility, and risk of penetration into the anterior cranial fossa. The aim of this study was to perform an anatomical study to validate the use of miniplates on the temporal face of the frontozygomatic region.
METHODS: Osseous thickness measurements were performed in 30 skulls, on four points above and four be

The treatment of this kind of lesion further remains difficult and requires work of several specialists: Neurosurgeon, Ophthalmologist, and ENT-surgeon. As for our opinion the reconstruction of anatomy and normal function of the frontal sinus is unequivocal, and performing it in the majority of cases renders in outstanding results.

BACKGROUND: Re-stenosis and a consequent need for revision surgery are the most common problems in the follow-up period following endoscopic modification of the Lothrop procedure.
METHOD: This paper reports a new technique for reconstructing and resurfacing of the posterior frontal recess bone for prevention of re-stenosis.
RESULTS: A 46-year-old man presented with a frontal sinus osteoma, and treatment featured an endoscopic modification of the Lothrop procedure. A vascularised, posteriorly based, septal mucosal flap was used in reconstruction. There have been no reported issues over 24 mon
