Energy of gait in below-knee casts with different soles.

This study aims to provide some guidelines for the use of soles on below-knee walking casts. Whole-body energy changes during the single limb support phase of the gait cycle have been quantified in twenty volunteer subjects fitted with below-knee casts and each wearing one of five soles in turn. Simple gait analysis was carried out with a Kistler force plate and an Apple II microcomputer, the data were sampled at 50 Hz. Three commercial soles and two 'home made' ones were used; it was generally found that the commercial products produced a more energy efficient gait. Some recommendations are i…

Personalized Functional Electrical Stimulation for the Correction of Pathological Gait in Children With Cerebral Palsy Using a Gait Analysis Platform: Toward a Clinically Adapted Solution.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can improve gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP), but gait impairments vary widely between individuals and likely require stimulation of different muscle groups. Delivering real-time, multichannel, gait-triggered stimulation remains difficult to implement in clinical practice. This study explores the technical feasibility of using gait analysis systems commonly available in pediatric rehabilitation centers to drive multichannel FES. The temporal performance of a real-time, gait-triggered system based on kinematic event detection was eval…

Geometrical restoration during total hip arthroplasty is related to change in gait pattern - a study based on computed tomography and three-dimensional gait analysis.

BACKGROUND: The effect of change in hip anatomy on change in gait pattern is not well described in current literature. Therefore, our primary aim was to describe and quantify changes in hip geometry and gait pattern 1 year after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in individuals with hip osteoarthritis. Our secondary aim was to explore the effect of postoperative change in femoral neck anteversion (FNA) and femoral offset and acetabular offset (FO/AO) quota on postoperative change in hip rotation and hip adduction moment during gait, respectively, 1 year after THA". METHODS: Sixty-five individuals w…

Robot-assisted vs. conventional gait training for balance and gait speed after stroke: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Balance and gait impairments are common disabling consequences of stroke and central targets of rehabilitation. Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) can deliver repetitive, task-specific, and quantifiable walking practice, yet its comparative effectiveness over conventional gait-oriented training remains uncertain. METHODS: We searched 8 English- and Chinese-language databases from inception through June 2, 2026 for randomized controlled trials comparing lower-limb RAGT with conventional therapeutic training after stroke. Primary outcomes were balance, assessed with the Berg Balanc…

Investigating the role of therapist-patient interaction during robot-assisted gait training after incomplete spinal cord injury: the INTER-RO-GAIT randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In the neurorehabilitation framework of treadmill-based robot-assisted gait training (t-RAGT), a threefold relationship among physiotherapist (Pht), patient (Pt), and the selected robotic device should be considered. Furthermore, the type of visual FeedBack (FB) selected for the training and how the Pht guides and supports the Pt have an important impact on Pt's engagement. Pht-Pt interaction is mostly effective when FB with high technical content is employed, and it affects Pt's visual attention and emotional experience during training. The INTER-RO-GAIT project proposes an experi…

Robotized Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis-Assisted Gait Training on Genu Recurvatum during Gait in Patients with Chronic Stroke: A Feasibility Study and Case Report.

Genu recurvatum (knee hyperextension) is a common problem after stroke. It is important to promote the coordination between knee and ankle movements during gait; however, no study has investigated how multi-joint assistance affects genu recurvatum. We are developing a gait training technique that uses robotized knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) to assists the knee and ankle joints simultaneously. This report aimed to investigate the safety of robotized KAFO-assisted gait training (Experiment 1) and a clinical trial to treat genu recurvatum in a patient with stroke (Experiment 2). Six healthy par…

Body mass index has consistent effects on the magnitude of gait variability while its effect on the temporal structure of gait variability is age-dependent.

PURPOSE: High body mass leads to changes in gait to accommodate the increased mechanical demands. Thus, previous research has examined how body mass affects gait variability (i.e., stride-to-stride fluctuations). However, these studies have been focused on the magnitude (extent of these fluctuations) of gait variability, while the effects of body mass on the temporal structure (how fluctuations are organized over time) remain unexplored. This study examined how body mass, quantified using body mass index (BMI), affects both magnitude and temporal structure of gait variability in young (24.66 ±…

Anxiety-related attentional characteristics and their relation to freezing of gait in people with Parkinson's: Cross-validation of the Adapted Gait Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP).

BackgroundAnxiety often exacerbates freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's (PwP). Anxiety-related attentional processes and associated processing inefficiencies, like conscious movement processing (CMP) and ruminations, can substantially impact movement control. However, their impact on FOG remains largely unexplored.ObjectiveTo validate an adapted 10-item (1-5 Likert scale) Gait-Specific Attentional Profile (G-SAP) in PwP and assess if adapted G-SAP-subscales (Physiological Arousal, CMP, Rumination, and Processing Inefficiencies) are associated with self-reported FOG frequency.Meth…

Creating an autoencoder single summary metric to assess gait quality to compare surgical outcomes in children with cerebral palsy: The Shriners Gait Index (SGI).

Gait for individuals with movement disorders varies widely and the variability makes it difficult to assess outcomes of surgical and therapeutic interventions. Although specific joints can be assessed by fewer individual measures, gait depends on multiple parameters making an overall assessment metric difficult to determine. A holistic, summary measure can permit a standard comparison of progress throughout treatments and interventions, and permit more straightforward comparison across varied subjects. We propose a single summary metric (the Shriners Gait Index (SGI)) to represent the quality …

Perturbation-based gait training to improve daily life gait stability in older adults at risk of falling: protocol for the REACT randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The European population is rapidly ageing. There is an urgent need for innovative solutions to reduce fall risk in older adults. Perturbation-based gait training is a promising new method to improve reactive balance responses. Whereas positive effects on task-specific dynamic balance recovery during gait have been shown in clinical or laboratory settings, translation of these effects to daily life gait function and fall risk is limited. We aim to evaluate the effect of a 4-week perturbation-based treadmill training on daily-life dynamic gait stability, assessed with inertial sensor…
