Semiologic subgroups of insulo-opercular seizures based on connectional architecture atlas.

OBJECTIVE: Insulo-opercular seizures are characterized by diverse semiology, related to the insula's multiple functional roles and extensive connectivity. We aimed to identify semiologic subgroups and correlate these with insulo-opercular subregions based on connectional architecture. METHODS: We retrospectively collected a large series of 37 patients with insulo-opercular seizures explored by stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) from three epilepsy centers. A new human brain atlas (Brainnetome Atlas, BNA) based on both anatomic and functional connections was employed to segment insulo-opercul

Reading speech from still and moving faces: the neural substrates of visible speech.

Speech is perceived both by ear and by eye. Unlike heard speech, some seen speech gestures can be captured in stilled image sequences. Previous studies have shown that in hearing people, natural time-varying silent seen speech can access the auditory cortex (left superior temporal regions). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the present study explored the extent to which this circuitry was activated when seen speech was deprived of its time-varying characteristics. In the scanner, hearing participants were instructed to look for a prespecified visible speech target sequence ("…

Development of FamTAM Intervention for Speech and Language Pathologists and Family Members.

Children with complex communication needs, including approximately one-third of children with autism, use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to meet their daily communication needs. AAC includes gestures, sign language, picture symbols, and computerized systems to augment or replace speech. Family support and training are essential for effective AAC implementation, but few interventions exist. We describe the iterative development of the FamTAM Intervention-an aided language modeling training and coaching intervention designed to support caregiver implementation and their school-…

Drawn-on-skin electronic tattoo as a closed-loop sensing-stimulation system for the muscles.

Simultaneous electromyography (EMG) sensing and closed-loop electrical stimulation (ES) could enable interactive muscle training, motor reha … ons and even between individuals. Machine learning models classify EMG patterns from different hand gestures with >90% accuracy and adapt ES parameters to stimulate specific muscle groups. In a heavy object holding task, users reached the required grip behavior substantially faster than unassisted controls, indicating improved neuromuscular efficiency. Thi …

Usability Comparison Between Leap Motion Controller and MediaPipe in Serious Games.

BACKGROUND: Serious games (SGs) with hand-tracking solutions are increasingly adopted in neurological rehabilitation. The Leap Motion Controller (LMC) is widely used in clinical and research contexts, while software-based systems, such as MediaPipe (MP), are emerging. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the usability of MP- and LMC-based SGs. METHODS: Seven SGs were developed to evaluate Grasp and Pinch gestures and tested with fifty healthy volunteers. Usability was assessed with the System Usability Scale (SUS) after each device, and an ad-hoc comparative questionnaire (LMC, MP, Neutral) colle…

The Role of Attention in Dyadic Social Interaction With Infants and Their Caregivers.

This study examined the relationship among early attention skills in infants and measures of dyadic interaction during caregiver-infant play, including interpersonal synchrony and turn-taking behavior. Thirty-five caregivers and their one-year-old infants (mean age = 15.34 months) completed a 5-minute free play session and sessions were coded for communication behaviors (eye contact, vocalizations, and gestures), coordinated attention, and infant visual attention states (focused, unfocused, and casual attention). Coordinated attention with a caregiver was not related to caregiver-infant synchr…

Facemasks reduce face trustworthiness perceived by deaf individuals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most people wore facemasks to protect themselves and others. Whilst this was recommendable, unfortunately face … occluding the mouth area prevents the processing of perceptual information from mouthing and mouth gestures, thus blocking a holistic representation of the face, which in turn hinders communication and limits social exchanges for deaf individuals.

Innovative Approach to Minimize Serious Complications in Cosmetic Dermal Filling.

Cosmetic dermal filling represents a significant advance in aesthetic medicine, providing non-invasive treatments with immediate and durable outcomes. Despite the generally safe nature of dermal fillers and avoidable complications with proper technique and planning, they are still risky, with potential complications varying from mild and transient to severe and enduring. This study introduces innovative strategies designed to decrease the risk of serious complications, such as vascular occlusion. These include the use of ultrasound guidance, the application of ice, auxiliary gestures, effectiv…

[A case of ectrodactyly: a private pilot with a single finger on each hand].

We report the case of a man with bilateral monodactyly whose sole remaining (third) finger on each hand is sensitive and mobile, and whose wrist motor control is normal. Opposed to the palm, the finger provides sufficient clamp function to manipulate medium-sized objects, while bi-manual grip is used for either very thin or voluminous items. Some gestures, such as using a crank, are achieved by simple palm pressure. His foot deformations have no functional consequences. His excellent driving skills suggested that he would be capable of learning to fly an airplane after two years of training wi…

Speech perception and motor control in children with Down syndrome.

Twelve children with and without Down syndrome (DS) performed eight subtests of an apraxia battery to determine under what conditions children with DS had difficulty performing representational and nonrepresentational gestures. Participants with DS also completed a dichotic listening test. Participants with DS performed just as well as control participants on all aspects of the apraxia battery except a subtest in which they were required to pantomime tool use from verbal instruction. This suggests that children with DS have difficulty generating an action from memory following verbal instructi…
