Hyaline fibromatosis syndrome (HFS) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by accumulation of hyalinized fibrous tissue with cutaneous, mucosal, osteoarticular, and systemic involvement. The condition is caused by a mutation of ANTXR2 gene that results in a faulty synthesis of a transmembrane protein which leads up to excessive deposition of hyaline material in extracellular space. The first signs may be present at birth or appear during infancy, and joint stiffness is the first, most common, symptom. Other manifestations include joint contractures, hyperpigmented macules

We describe a case of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; formerly named Wegener granulomatosis) that presented initially as florid areas … iterature indicates that gingival swelling, often with the characteristic appearance of "strawberry gingivitis" may represent the initial sign of disease in 2% of patients with GPA. Biopsy of gingival lesions often shows a non-specific histologic appearance that should be interpreted in the context of the clinical appearance and pertinent medical history. Th …

In the modern world, men and women are very much concerned about their esthetic appearance. The gingival perspective of esthetics is more often concerned with the soft tissue envelope surrounding the teeth. Gingival enlargement/overgrowth is numerous in nature and often poses a clinical challenge by altering the function, resulting in poor oral health of an individual. Tacrolimus, an immunosuppressive drug, has been broadly used for organ-transplant rejection. It results in much less severe hypertension, hypertrichosis and gingival overgrowth compared to cyclosporine and calcium channel blocke

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare oral disease characterized by either localized or generalized gradual, benign, non-hemorrhagic enlargement of gingivae. Although several genetic causes of HGF are known, the genetic etiology of HGF as a non-syndromic and idiopathic entity remains uncertain.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We performed exome and RNA-seq of idiopathic HGF patients and controls, and then devised a computational framework that specifies exomic/transcriptomic alterations interconnected by a regulatory network to unravel genetic etiology of HGF. Moreover, given the

This study aimed to compare the perceptions of smile esthetics among general practitioners, periodontists, and laypeople. Photographs of smiles were taken and digitally modified to create different gingival conditions: gingival asymmetry, unilateral gingival recession, and bilateral gingival recession. These photographs were evaluated by 150 volunteers (19-70 years old) using a 100.0-mm visual analog scale. The volunteers consisted of 50 laypeople with no knowledge of dentistry, 50 general dentists, and 50 periodontists. Analysis of variance and Student t test were performed when data presente

Gingival enlargements (GEs) can be caused by local, systemic diseases or drugs. Three molecules can be responsible of GEs: ciclosporin, phenytoin and calcium channel blockers (CCBs). We report the case of a 56-year-old male treated by Amlodipine, a CCB, for hypertension for many years and who recently developed a severe GE affecting both mandibular and maxillary arches inducing dental malposition. The histological examination showed non-specific inflammation with a predominance of lymphocytes. Amlodipine was suspected and suspended in agreement with his physician. One month later, the enlargem

PURPOSE: Inadequate gingival thickness (GT) may lead to gingival recession. Thus, early identification of patients/teeth at risk would be advantageous. In adults, the probe's visibility through the marginal gingiva (reference test) has been considered a reliable criterion to describe a thin gingiva. This study aimed to evaluate in children two more convenient methods: the whitening of the attached gingiva with coronal labial traction (GW test) and the visibility of the gingival blood supply (BS test).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 69 children, the GT of primary and/or permanent central and latera

BACKGROUND: Localized juvenile spongiotic gingival hyperplasia (LJSGH) is a gingival lesion of unknown cause. The purpose of this study is to present a series of LJSGH cases and compare the findings with the literature.
METHODS: After obtaining institutional review board approval, cases of biopsy-proven LJSGH from 2008 through 2018 were retrieved from the University of Pittsburgh Oral Pathology Biopsy Service archives and reviewed. In addition, a comprehensive review of the literature was performed.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight cases were identified. No significant sex predilection was noted (male-

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is an uncommon gingival disease of attached gingiva, which is manifested as localized or generalized form. The HGF inheritance is transmitted through both autosomal dominant and recessive modes. Here, we are discussing a rare case report of an 8-year-old child with gingival fibromatosis in mixed dentition, which caused damage to his speech, mastication, and esthetics and led to significant change in his facial profile. The patient noticed that the gingival enlargement was simultaneous with deciduous dentition eruption and gradually covered entire dentitio

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare disorder characterized by a benign, non-hemorrhagic, fibrous gingival overgrowth that can appear in isolation or as part of a syndrome. Clinically, a pink gingiva with marked stippling can be seen to cover almost all the tooth, in many cases preventing eruption. HGF usually begins during the transition from primary to permanent teeth, giving rise to a condition that can have negative psychological effects at that age. As it does not resolve spontaneously, the treatment of choice is gingivectomy, which can be performed with an internal or externa

Gingival overgrowth (GO) is one of the common findings in clinical practice. There could be several causes including drugs associated with the GO. Carbamazepine (CBZ) and amlodipine are the drugs which are infrequently documented as a cause in inducing the gingival hyperplasia. Certain drugs in the body fluid might limit the population of plaque bacteria and alter their metabolism that in turn induce the inflammatory mediators and also activate the genetic and biochemical factors responsible for gingival fibroblast growth. Drug-induced GO is a side effect with a multifactorial etiology that se

This case report presents a case of drug induced gingival overgrowth in a 28-year-old female patient with history of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and was prescribed digoxin in combination with furosemide and acitrom for the same. On clinical examination, the patient presented with severe gingival overgrowth. The volume of enlargement seen did not correlate solely with the diagnosis of inflammatory Gingival Enlargement (GE), hence an added drug induced component to the Gingival Overgrowth (GO) was suspected. It was decided to treat the condition using initial therapy {meticulous Scaling and Ro

Localized gingival overgrowths are commonly encountered in our day-to-day clinical practice and often present a diagnostic dilemma to the clinicians. These lesions vary depending on the location, site, extent, histology, and/or etiopathology. Although most of the localized gingival enlargements represent the reactive lesion to plaque accumulation, the differential diagnosis ranges from peripheral fibroma to pyogenic granuloma to peripheral fibroma with ossification and/or calcification, peripheral giant cell granuloma, etc., Even the peripheral ameloblastoma may present clinically as a mere lo

Hamartoma is a tumour-like malformation appearing as a focal overgrowth of normal cells. Leiomyomatous hamartomas (LHs) are rare in the oral cavity and commonly seen in the Japanese and less than 40 cases have been reported in the Japanese and English literature. The clinical differential diagnoses are irritational (traumatic) fibroma and congenital epulis. It has to be differentiated histopathologically from its neoplastic counterparts and mesenchymomas. Hence, we report such a case of LHs, which presented as a sessile gingival growth occurring in the midline in a 15-year-old girl. The final

Oral metastatic tumor, which is uncommon and represents less than 1% of malignant oral neoplasms, usually arises from a primary mucosal or cutaneous cancer located in the head and neck regions. Metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to the oral cavity, especially to gingiva, is extremely rare. A 50-year-old man, who was a chronic alcoholic and hepatitis B virus carrier, presented with abdominal distension and weight loss for the past 3 months. Three-phased contrast-enhanced abdominal CT revealed numerous conglomerated masses in the liver, suggesting huge HCCs arising in the background of

Gingival fibromatosis is a painless gingival overgrowth. It may result in difficulties with proper dental hygiene keeping, mastication and occlusion. Herein, a case of a 10-year-old patient was described. The patient reported to the Department of Periodontology and Oral Medicine of the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow due to the problems with permanent teeth eruption (23-26), chewing and dental hygiene maintaining. Based on medical history, clinical examination, diagnostic tests and histopathological study of gingival tissue biopsies the patient was diagnosed with unilateral i

Clinicians are often intrigued by the varied manifestations of the gingival tissue. Gingival overgrowth is a common clinical finding and most of them represent a reactive hyperplasia as a direct result of plaque-related inflammatory gingival disease. These types of growth generally respond to good plaque control, removal of the causative irritants, and conservative tissue management. This case series highlights three different cases of localized gingival overgrowth and its management with emphasis on the importance of patient awareness and motivation.
