[A case of facial paralysis caused by granulocytic sarcoma of the external auditory canal].

Summary A male patients at 11 years of age, was hospitalized for the right ear pain and mouth deviation for five days on August 30, 2016, accompanied by right hypophasis, right ear hearing loss, tinnitus, without otorrhea and vertigo. Patient was diagnosed as acute promyelocytic leukemia in 2008. After standardized chemotherapy, it was completely relieved and the blood and bone marrow images were almost restored to normal. Physical examination: The skin of the right external auditory canal is obviously swollen, without rupture on the surface, and the tympanic membrane cannot be seen. The droop

Intraoral granulocytic sarcoma as a manifestation of myelofibrosis: A case report and review of the literature.

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is an extramedullary tumor associated with myelodysplastic syndromes or myeloproliferative diseases. Intraoral manifestations are considered uncommon, with a reasonable number of cases, and are mostly related to leukemia. The association of oral GS and myelofibrosis is very rare and only three cases have been published. In this paper, we report the fourth case of oral lesion in a patient with a diagnosis of myelofibrosis. The aim of this study was to present a review of the literature, discussing the current and previous cases of oral GS associated with myelofibrosis

The Use of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor in Clozapine Rechallenge: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Clozapine is associated with hematological abnormalities, with neutropenia and agranulocytosis of most concern. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been used to support clozapine rechallenge after neutropenia with the aim of maintaining the neutrophil count. This study aims to explore the practice, use, safety, and efficacy of G-CSF in this context. METHODS/PROCEDURES: We conducted a systematic review to identify all studies investigating or describing G-CSF as a prophylaxis to enable continued clozapine treatment during a rechallenge. FINDINGS/RESULTS: We i

Dose-Dependent Effect of Granulocyte Transfusions in Hematological Patients with Febrile Neutropenia.

It is still under debate whether granulocyte transfusions (GTs) substantially increase survival in patients with febrile neutropenia. We retrospectively examined data relative to 96 patients with hematological malignancies receiving 491 GTs during 114 infectious episodes (IE). Patients were grouped according to the median doses of granulocytes transfused during the infectious episode (low-dose group: 3.0x108 cells/Kg). The impact of clinical, microbiological and GT-related variables on the infection-related mortality (IRM) was investigated. The IRM was not influenced by the number of GTs or by…

Type 1 autoimmune pancreatitis with histologically proven granulocytic epithelial lesions.

There are two distinct subtypes of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP): type 1 and type 2. Type 1 AIP is the pancreatic manifestation of systemic fibroinflammatory disease, which is named as IgG4-related disease. On the other hand, type 2 AIP is a pancreatic disorder that is not associated with IgG4. Type 1 and type 2 AIP have different clinical profiles and histologic findings. We present a 22-year-old man who has been diagnosed as type 1 AIP with histologically proven granulocytic epithelial lesion after surgical resection for pancreatic head mass. Since the patient had no pancreatic duct narrowin

Granulocytic sarcoma with compressive myelopathy: a rare presentation of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Granulocytic sarcoma occurs most commonly in acute myelogenous leukemia. The appearance of granulocytic sarcoma in chronic myelogenous leukemia signals accelerated phase/ blast transformation. This is a rare case of undiagnosed chronic myelogenous leukemia with granulocytic sarcoma causing cord compression, which went into tumour lysis syndrome requiring dialysis after starting of steroids and radiotherapy. A 43-year-old male presented in emergency department with acute onset of flaccid paralysis. On clinical examination, there was hepatosplenomegaly and lower motor neuron paralysis in the low

Clinical safety of biosimilar recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factors.

INTRODUCTION: A 'biosimilar', or 'similar biological medicinal product', is a biologic agent that is similar in terms of quality, safety and efficacy to an authorized reference biological medicine. Since the expiration of the filgrastim patent in Europe, three agents have received marketing authorization from the EMA: Tevagrastim, Zarzio and Nivestim. Tevagrastim has also been approved as a biologic by the FDA as tbo-filgrastim. AREAS COVERED: Using the EMA dossiers (all three agents), the FDA dossier (Tevagrastim), and journal publications, this article reviews clinical safety data for these

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor: a new player for the enteric nervous system.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) controls and modulates gut motility and responds to food intake and to internal and external stimuli such as toxins or inflammation. Its plasticity is maintained throughout life by neural progenitor cells within the enteric stem cell niche. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is known to act not only on cells of the immune system but also on neurons and neural progenitors in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, that G-CSF receptor is present on enteric neurons and progenitors and that G-CSF plays a role in the ex

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor as treatment option in patients with recurrent miscarriage.

In 1-5% of patients during childbearing years recurrent miscarriages (RM) occur. There are established risk factors like anatomical, endocrine and hemostatic disorders as well as immunological changes in the maternal immune system. Nevertheless, further elucidation of the pathogenesis remains a matter of debate. In addition, there are no standardized immunological treatment strategies. Recent studies indicate possible effects of tumor necrosis factor α blocker and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) concerning live birth rate (LBR) in RM patients. Therefore, we performed a retrospect

Mucosal healing of esophageal involvement of Crohn's disease with granulocyte/monocyte adsorption.

We report a case of a 16-year-old male who suffered from Crohn's disease (CD) with esophageal involvement, showing remarkable improvement with granulocyte/monocyte adsorption (GMA). The patient had been diagnosed as ileocolic CD and was treated with 5-aminosalicylate. He was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and odynophagia. Endoscopic examinations revealed that the exacerbation of ileocolic ulcers, and advent of ulcers in esophagus. Because of the patient's refusal to receive corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or biologics, he underwent GMA twice a week. After 10 sess

Generalized pustular psoriasis successfully treated with granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis.

Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is one of the neutrophilic dermatoses mainly caused by activated neutrophils and monocytes. Granulocyte and monocyte adsorption apheresis (GCAP) is a useful extracorporeal circulation therapy for removal of activated granulocytes and monocytes. In this study, GCAP was used to treat three patients with different types of GPP; the diagnoses indicated patient 1 had GPP, patient 2 had GPP developed from psoriasis vulgaris and patient 3 had GPP based on psoriatic erythroderma. We performed GCAP on each of these patients once a week, for a total of five times. We…

Emerging incidence of Lyme borreliosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis, and granulocytic ehrlichiosis in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease (LD), and Babesia, Bartonella, and Ehrlichia species (spp.) are recognized tick-borne pathogens in humans worldwide. Using serology and molecular testing, the incidence of these pathogens was investigated in symptomatic patients from Australia. METHODS: Sera were analyzed by an immunofluorescent antibody assay (IFA) followed by immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM Western blot (WB) assays. Both whole blood and sera were analyzed for detection of specific Borrelia spp. DNA using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Sim

First described case of human granulocytic anaplasmosis in a patient in Eastern Austria.

A 64-year-old otherwise healthy patient presented with high fever, thrombocytopenia, elevated liver enzymes and an erythema on the belly. The patient remembered a tick bite four weeks ago when walking with his dog before the specific symptoms started. A meningococcal disease or hematological illness was excluded. The serological results for tick-borne diseases showed a high IgG antibody titer for Anaplasma phagocytophila. All symptoms and laboratory parameters normalized after one week of hospitalization. The patient received no treatment and recovered completely. This is the first confirmed c

Granulocytic sarcoma after stem cell transplantation in a child with biphenotypic leukemia.

Granulocytic sarcoma is an extramedullary tumor composed of leukemic blasts. Isolated granulocytic sarcoma has rarely been reported in children with leukemia undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation. We report a case of isolated granulocytic sarcoma arising from the pleura in an 11-year-old girl who was previously treated for biphenotypic leukemia with allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Complete resolution of the tumor was achieved after two inductions with MRC 12 protocol; however, she died of sepsis during the neutropenic period. The unusual presentation, immunophenotypic differenc

Protective effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on intracerebral hemorrhage in rat.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a member of the cytokine family of growth factors that can protect the neurons from focal cerebral ischemia-induced injuries. The intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has been widely observed in the clinic; however, the protective effect of G-CSF on ICH is still elusive. We found in the present study that the intraperitoneal injection of G-CSF for 5 days could improve the ICH-induced neuronal behavioral impairment measured by limb placement assay. We also observed that injection of G-CSF could increase the number of stem cells in the specific zone of

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-producing pancreatic cancer: report of a case.

A 74-year-old man was hospitalized for the investigation of fever and severe general fatigue. Laboratory examinations revealed severe leukocytosis, with a leukocyte count of 29 500/mm(3). Computed tomography, ultrasonography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed a pancreatic tumor with a diameter of 70 mm. We performed distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy and gastrectomy because there was invasion of the posterior wall of the stomach. The leukocyte count decreased to 16 900/mm(3) immediately following the operation, but it began to increase again a week later, ultimately
