An experimental model for empyema thoracis in the Duncan-Harley guinea pig is introduced. Effects of X-ray irradiation on the hearing with CM and ABR to both air- and bone-conduction stimuli were studied continuously from immediately after the irradiation to a few weeks later. At 2, 4, and 6 krad, only slight conductive hearing impairment was found, but at 8 krad or more, CM and ABR disappeared abruptly, after having increased briefly. Adenosine receptors in guinea pig lung were characterized by measurement of cyclic AMP formation and radioligand binding. 5'-N-Ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA) increased cyclic AMP levels in lung slices about 4-fold over basal values with an EC50 of 0.32 mumol/l. The effect of lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) on the guinea pig stomach was studied. At concentrations observed in gastric secretions of gastric ulcer patients (1 to 2 mM), lysoPC induced both functional and morphologic changes in the gastric mucosa. Virulent and attenuated Junin virus (JV) strains have been employed to study the influence of virus passage history on the neurotropism for guinea pigs. Five i.p. successive passages (P1-P5) of the pathogenic JV-XJ strain and of the attenuated XJO variant were performed in guinea pig spleen. The sensitizing potential of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the guinea pig could be demonstrated by Freund's Complete Adjuvant Test. This acrylate ester is a common constituent of adhesive tape. The responses to histamine were studied in circular smooth muscles of three different regions of the guinea pig stomach: the fundus, the antrum and the pylorus. Histamine elicited contractions in all three regions. The contractile responses to histamine were completely abolished by mepyramine (10(-3) g/l). We studied the effects of various conditions on the recovery of eosinophils from the peritoneal cavity of guinea pigs repeatedly lavaged with saline. We compared the effects of ether and halothane on eosinophil production in guinea pigs either lavaged with saline alone or receiving an injection of polymyxin B before saline lavage. Chronic naloxone treatment of schedule-fed guinea pigs caused an initial anorexia followed by a resumption of food and water intake, despite the continued presence of the narcotic antagonist. During this state of chronic naloxone treatment, amphetamine exerted a similar degree of anorexia to that in animals not pretreated with naloxone. The early stages of urethal stricture formation have been examined by light and electron microscopy after injury of the anterior urethra in the guinea pig. It was found that initially an ulcerated surface formed which was subsequently covered by simple then stratified squamous epithelium. The tissue of the stricture contained elongated myofibroblasts and clumps of multinucleated giant cells. It is suggested that the myofibroblasts are responsible for the formation of the stricture and that the giant cells may be involved in continued collagen synthesis.

A retrospective review of cryptococcal meningitis in Papua New Guinea adults showed that the condition is at least as common as tuberculous meningitis. The majority of the patients were young and all were previously healthy. A mortality rate of more than 50% was observed despite amphotericin B therapy. Cryptococcal aetiology should be suspected and looked for in every patient with chronic meningitis in Papua New Guinea. Examining the cerebrospinal fluid for cryptococcal antigen is of value when Indian ink smear and culture are negative.
