Emotion processing in joint hypermobility: A potential link to the neural bases of anxiety and related somatic symptoms in collagen anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) has repeatedly been associated with anxiety and anxiety disorders, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and temporomandibular joint disorder. However, the neural underpinnings of these associations still remain unclear. This study explored brain responses to facial visual stimuli with emotional cues using fMRI techniques in general population with different ranges of hypermobility. METHODS: Fifty-one non-clinical volunteers (33 women) completed state and trait anxiety questionnaire measures, were assessed with a clinical examination for hypermo

Augmentative therapies do not potentiate the antidepressant-like effects of deep brain stimulation in rats.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials have shown promising results with the use of subcallosal cingulate gyrus deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment-resistant depression. However, strategies to manage patients who do not respond to this therapy have not been explored in detail. In rats, DBS in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) induces a significant antidepressant-like response in the forced swim test (FST). We have used this test to investigate potential interactions between DBS and clinically used augmentative regimens. METHODS: Rats undergoing the FST were treated with vmPFC DBS along w

Surgical/radiological interventions for cancer pain.

Pain is a major morbidity associated with cancer and up to 20% patients require invasive procedures for pain relief. Ablative techniques can be directed towards the spinal cord and brain to palliate pain or modify its perception. Anterolateral cordotomy, myelotomy, DREZotomy and cingulotomy are useful interventions for the management of refractory cancer pain. Advanced imaging modalities, including intraoperative computed tomography (CT) guidance, have increased safety and efficacy of these interventions. In this paper, authors review the recent literature regarding surgical interventions for

Altered brain response to reward and punishment in adolescents with Anorexia nervosa.

Adults recovered from Anorexia nervosa (AN) have altered reward modulation within striatal limbic regions associated with the emotional significance of stimuli, and executive regions concerned with planning and consequences. We hypothesized that adolescents with AN would show similar disturbed reward modulation within the striatum and the anterior cingulate cortex, a region connected to the striatum and involved in reward-guided action selection. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, twenty-two adolescent females (10 restricting-type AN, 12 healthy volunteers) performed a monetary guess

Altered affective processing in bipolar disorder: an fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that patients with bipolar disorder (BPD) exhibit altered emotional processing and regulation. However, results remain largely inconsistent across studies. The aim of the current study was to further examine affective processing in patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Twenty-three patients diagnosed with BPD (Type I) and 18 healthy matched controls completed a backward-masked affect paradigm while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. Participants also completed a computerized, overt task of facial emotional discrimination after scann

A longitudinal study of fronto-limbic brain structures in patients with bipolar I disorder during lithium treatment.

In order to assess the association between therapeutic response to lithium treatment and fronto-limbic brain structures' volumes in bipolar I patients (BPI) 24 BPI and 11 healthy comparisons underwent MRI scans at baseline and 4 weeks later. The BPIs received lithium during the 4 week period with a goal of achieving therapeutic blood levels of >0.5 mEq/L (mean level 0.67 mEq/L). Mood symptoms were rated with the Hamilton Depression and the Young Mania Rating Scales at baseline and after 4 weeks, and response was defined as >50% decrease on either scale. Hippocampus, amygdala, prefrontal (PFC),

Localization of brain white matter hyperintensities and urinary incontinence in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: Because white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be linked to geriatric syndromes involving mobility, cognition, and affect, we postulated that involvement of areas critical to bladder control could influence urinary incontinence (UI). METHODS: One hundred community-dwelling individuals (75-89 years) were recruited into three groups stratified by age and gender reflecting normal and mildly and moderately impaired mobility. Baseline incontinence status and related symptoms were evaluated in 97 individuals using validated instruments (3IQ, Urinary

Event-related potentials in a Go/Nogo task of abnormal response inhibition in heroin addicts.

Inhibitory control dysfunction is regarded as a core feature in addicts. The major objective of this study was to explore the time course of response inhibition in chronic heroin addicts and provide the neurophysiological evidence of their inhibitory control dysfunction. The amplitudes and latencies of ERP components were studied in fourteen heroin addicts (mean duration of heroin use being (13.54+/-5.71) years (Mean+/-SD), average abstinence being ((4.67+/-6.44) months)) and fourteen matched healthy controls with a visual Go/Nogo task. Our results showed that heroin addicts demonstrated signi

Spatial distribution of cingulate cortical cells projecting to the primary motor cortex in the rat.

We examined the location and spatial distribution of cingulate cortical cells projecting to the primary motor cortex (M1) in rats, using a double retrograde-labeling technique. The orofacial, forelimb, and hindlimb areas of M1 were physiologically identified based on the findings of intracortical microstimulation and single cell recording. Two different tracers, diamidino yellow and fast blue, were injected into two sites of M1 in each rat. Retrograde-labeled cells in the cingulate cortex were plotted with an automated plotting system. Cells projecting to the orofacial and forelimb areas of M1

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre

A magnetic resonance imaging study of cortical thickness in animal phobia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of specific phobia (SP), its neural substrates remain undetermined. Although an initial series of functional neuroimaging studies have implicated paralimbic and sensory cortical regions in the pathophysiology of SP, to date contemporary morphometric neuroimaging methods have not been applied to test specific hypotheses regarding structural abnormalities. METHODS: Morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods were used to measure regional cortical thickness in 10 subjects with SP (animal type) and 20 healthy comparison (HC) subjects. RESULTS: Co

Anterior cingulate, gyrus rectus, and orbitofrontal abnormalities in elderly depressed patients: an MRI-based parcellation of the prefrontal cortex.

OBJECTIVE: To examine structural abnormalities in subregions of the prefrontal cortex in elderly patients with depression, the authors explored differences in gray matter, white matter, and CSF volumes by applying a parcellation method based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHOD: Twenty-four elderly patients with major depression and 19 group-matched comparison subjects were studied with high-resolution MRI. Cortical surface extraction, tissue segmentation, and cortical parcellation methods were applied to obtain volume measures of gray matter, white matter, and CSF in seven prefrontal

Isolated executive impairment and associated frontal neuropathology.

Cognitive impairment in the absence of dementia is common in elderly individuals and is most often studied in the context of an isolated impairment in memory. In the current study, we report the neuropsychological and neuropathological features of a nondemented elderly individual with isolated impairment on a test of executive function (i.e., Trail Making Test) and preserved memory, language, and visuospatial function. Postmortem studies indicated that cortical neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) varied considerably, and some regions contained large numbers of neuritic senile plaques. Semiquantitati

Substance P (NK1) receptors in the cingulate cortex in unipolar and bipolar mood disorder and schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The substance P receptor (neurokinin-1 receptor) has been implicated in stress responses and anxiety traits in the rodent, and neurokinin-1 receptor antagonism may have antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. This suggests that the function and/or expression of neurokinin-1 receptor might be affected in subjects with mood disorders. METHODS: We measured neurokinin-1 receptor densities in the anterior cingulate cortex in subjects with unipolar (major) depression (n = 13), bipolar disorder (n = 13), schizophrenia (n = 14), and controls (n = 14) using quantitative autoradiography with

Mirth, laughter and gelastic seizures.

Little is known about what pathways subserve mirth and its expression laughter. We present three patients with gelastic seizures and laughter elicited by electrical stimulation of the cortex who provide some insight into the mechanisms of laughter and its emotional concomitants. The first patient had seizures manifested by laughter without a subjective feeling of mirth. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cavernous haemangioma in the left superior mesial frontal region. Ictal subdural electrode recording showed the seizure onset to be in the left anterior cingulate gyrus. Removal of the lesion

Cytoarchitectonic development of the prefrontal cortex in the rat.

This paper gives an account of the cytoarchitectonic characteristics that make it possible to delineate, from as early as day 6, different subareas of the prefrontal cortex of the rat. Three phases can be distinguished during postnatal development. The first phase (from day 1 until day 18) is dominated by differentiation of the neurons within the cortical plate and by the formation of the cortical layers. At day 1, regional differences are observed in the cytoarchitecture of the cortical plate which correspond to the future subareas of the prefrontal cortex. The formation of layer IV occurs in

Effects of ovarian steroids on serotonin metabolism within grossly dissected and microdissected brain regions of the ovariectomized rat.

Brain serotonin (5-HT) levels and accumulation rate within the dorsal raphe nucleus (DR) were elevated in ovariectomized (OVX) rats after ovarian steroid treatment, which consisted of estradiol benzoate (EB) followed by progesterone (P) 48 hr later. Some animals were also given the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor pargyline at designated times 10-40 min prior to sacrifice. Decapitation occurred 5 hr following the second steroid injection and 4-6 hr into the dark phase of a 14:10 light/dark cycle. Basal 5-HT levels and the rate of 5-HT accumulation (5-HTr) following MAO inhibition were estimat

Ictal Epileptogenic Network Differences in Posterior Cingulate Epilepsy Subtypes Based on SEEG.

AIMS: To compare differences in ictal propagation between epileptogenic networks between posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) epilepsy and retrosplenial cortex (RSC) epilepsy and to elucidate their network-level pathophysiological characteristics. METHODS: A total of 18 patients with confirmed PCC or RSC-related epilepsy were enrolled in this study. We calculated directed functional connectivity across preictal, ictal onset, and propagation phases based on pairwise nonlinear regression (h2 coefficient). Using graph theory and linear mixed-effects models, we quantified network topology and dynamic
