Children, and particularly infants, have physiological, anatomic, and social factors that increase vulnerability to temperature extremes. We performed a systematic review to explore the association between acute adverse infant outcomes (children 0-1 years) and exposure to high and low ambient temperatures. MEDLINE (Pubmed), Embase, CINAHL Plus, and Global Health were searched alongside the reference lists of key papers. We included published journal papers in English that assessed adverse infant outcomes related to short-term weather-related temperature exposure. Twenty-six studies met our inc

UNLABELLED: The clinical spectrum of sickle cell disease (SCD) in the Arabian Peninsula varies widely. This is the first report in Yemeni children.
METHODS: A hospital-based, cross-sectional study was undertaken in Al-Wahada Teaching Hospital in Aden of children under 16 years with homozygous (SS) SCD.
RESULTS: Fifty-six (55%) were males. There were clinical manifestations in 20% by the age of 6 months and in 67%, 88% and 92% by 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. Dactylitis (hand-foot syndrome) was the most common presenting symptom and occurred in 54% of cases, followed by acute respiratory in…

Bi-allelic MED16 variants underlie the recently described MEDopathy termed Guillouet-Gordon syndrome (GGNS, MIM #621220), characterized by neurodevelopmental and structural anomalies. To date, 27 individuals with GGNS have been reported, collectively harboring 28 distinct compound heterozygous or homozygous MED16 variants. Here we present a male infant, born to unrelated parents, presenting with multiple congenital anomalies overlapping with the established GGNS phenotypic spectrum. Specifically, the clinical presentation included structural brain defects and neurodevelopmental deficits alongs

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced adverse effects (CIAEs) remain a challenging problem due to their high incidences and negative impacts on t … AEs. Most importantly, poultry was an overall protective factor; milk and egg were risk factors for hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and bone marrow suppression (BMS), respectively. Developed multivariate models in predicting grade 1 to 3 CIAEs and grade 2/3 CIAEs both had good discrimination (AUROC values from 0.671 to 0.778, 0.750 to 0.946 respectively), which had potenti …

The skin often signals a number of systemic disease, making skin findings of paramount significance. Paraneoplastic diseases and collagen vascular diseases are vitally important illnesses. Paraneoplastic diseases and collagen vascular diseases may also occur with many different acral skin findings. Paraneoplastic skin diseases, associated with some cancers, are by definition nonmalignant skin disorders. These diseases can occur before, simultaneously, or after the diagnosis of cancer. Acral paraneoplastic diseases include acanthosis nigricans maligna, acquired pachydermatoglyphia, acrokeratosi

Disseminated disease caused by non-tuberculous, environmental mycobacteria (EM) reflects impaired host immunity. Disseminated disease caused by Mycobacterium scrofulaceum has primarily been reported in patients with AIDS. Moreover, observing M. scrofulaceum as the agent of localized disease in childhood has become increasingly rare. We report the first case of disseminated disease caused by M. scrofulaceum in a child with inherited interferon-gamma receptor 1 (IFN-gammaR1) complete deficiency. As in this case, mycobacterial bone infections in IFN-gammaR1 deficiency can sometimes mimic the clin

Psychiatric disease occurs with increased frequency in a number of malformation syndromes. We hypothesize that the study of these disorders is helpful for understanding the pathophysiology of psychiatric disease. With this objective, we have been screening for individuals with malformations and prominent psychiatric disease. We report on a man with visual and auditory hallucinations and behavioral problems who was the product of an incestuous relationship and had anomalies primarily of his face, hands and feet. His distinctive features define an undescribed acro-auricular malformation syndrome

We report a 27-year-old Japanese man with the peculiar clinical features of acrogeria. He had had perniosis since early childhood. Prominent atrophic skin changes over the hands, hallux valgus, shortened distal phalanges and atrophic scars on his auricles were noted. X-ray of the hands revealed acro-osteolytic changes of the distal phalanges, and arteriography demonstrated multiple occluded branches of the digital arteries. There were no histological changes of systemic sclerosis in his forearm skin, nor antinuclear antibodies or coagulation disorders. Western immunoblotting demonstrated decre

We report two sisters with growth failure, relative microcephaly, peculiar facies and apical dystrophy (brachydactyly type B). They had shortness and clinodactyly of the 5th fingers, aplasia or hypoplasia of the distal phalanges of 5th fingers, short medial phalanges of the 2nd and 5th fingers, hypoplasia or aplasia of distal phalanges of 2-5th toes, with tiny toenails, and aplasia or nails of 5th fingers and right 5th toe in the younger sister. Dysmorphic facial features included high forehead, sparse hair, blepharophimosis, telecanthus, epicanthic folds, a low nasal bridge, a broad nasal tip

We report the seventeenth case of the recessive form of the DOOR syndrome. The parents were Guatemalan and not known to be consanguineous. The patient had developmental delay, severe sensorineural deafness, and abnormal nails and phalanges in the hands and feet. Urinary 2-oxoglutarate excretion was normal. The patient was among a subset of DOOR syndrome patients without seizures in infancy. This observation may be useful in discussing the prognosis for newly identified cases.

A 23-year-old female patient with the acrorenal syndrome is described. In addition to acral and renal malformations, she had anomalies of the gastrointestinal and genital tracts. An annular pancreas had caused duodenal obstruction and had been associated with malrotation of the bowel. Secondary sexual characteristics were absent; no ovaries were identified by pelvic ultrasound, and endocrine investigations were compatible with non-functioning ovaries.

We report two male sibs and two female sibs from separate families, both with normal parents, who had a lethal condition with features of the Yunis-Varon syndrome and radiological signs of severe osteodysplasty. Autosomal recessive inheritance is likely in both families. The additional features described represent further delineation of the phenotype of the Yunis-Varon syndrome.

Here we report a 10 year-old mentally retarded, deaf boy with a unique pattern of anomalies: progeroid appearance, characteristic facial and limb anomalies, multiple synostoses, and distinct skeletal changes. He represents a variant example of "hyperostotic dwarfism" as delineated by Lenz and Majewski.

Limb defects from 25 fetuses with limb-body wall (LBW) complex were evaluated to determine the mechanism of limb damage. The limb defects could be divided into 3 pathogenetic groups: (1) secondary to disruption of embryonic vessels and surrounding tissue (84%), (2) secondary to amniotic bands or adhesions (16%), and (3) deformation versus hemorrhage (44% with club feet), with some fetuses having more than one pathogenetic mechanism causing limb defects. The hypothesis that the majority of limb defects resulted from disruption of embryonic vessels was supported by the following findings: 96% of
