Assessing mothers' knowledge and attitudes towards rheumatic fever and the chronic nature of rheumatic heart disease: an analysis of influential factors.

BACKGROUND: The burden of rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a significant health concern. Despite being largely preventable, their persistence is strongly linked to gaps in community awareness and preventive practices. This study aimed to assess mothers' knowledge and attitudes towards RF and RHD and to identify modifiable factors influencing prevention. METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted in Najran, Saudi Arabia, among 771 mothers from June to September 2025. Data were collected using a structured self-administered online questionnaire covering basic characteri

Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards osteoporosis and its association with magnesium intake in Jazan, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

Osteoporosis results from low bone mass and microstructure and leads to fragility fractures. Nutritional supplements play a vital role in maintaining bone health. However, many people are unaware of the significance of this nutritional supplement, specifically magnesium, in reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, we aimed to explore the level of knowledge among adults towards osteoporosis and the role of magnesium, their attitudes, and practices towards magnesium supplementation. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 755 participants aged ≥ 18 years from various regions of Jaza

Perspectives on implementing smoke-free prison policies in England and Wales.

This paper explores prisoner and staff views of the current smoking policy in English and Welsh prisons (a partial ban permitting smoking in prison cells) and gauges perceptions of the implications of the forthcoming policy change which will see a total smoking ban within all parts of the institution. Five focus group discussions in one medium security male prison in England were undertaken. Three focus groups were undertaken with prisoners (both smokers and non-smokers) and two focus groups with staff. The findings suggest that smoking is embedded in the fabric of prison life and serves sever

Knowledge, attitude and practice regarding dengue fever among the healthy population of highland and lowland communities in central Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever (DF) is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. In this decade it has expanded to new countries and from urban to rural areas. Nepal was regarded DF free until 2004. Since then dengue virus (DENV) has rapidly expanded its range even in mountain regions of Nepal, and major outbreaks occurred in 2006 and 2010. However, no data on the local knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of DF in Nepal exist although such information is required for prevention and control measures. METHODS: We conducted a community based cross-sectional survey in fiv

Maternal Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Complementary Feeding Among Children Under 2 Years of Age: An Urban-Rural Comparison in Jharkhand, India.

Background  Appropriate complementary feeding during the period of 6-24 months is essential for meeting the growing nutritional requirements of infants that cannot be met by breast milk alone after six months of age. Maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) are critical determinants of infant feeding behavior. Urban-rural disparities in education, socioeconomic status, and healthcare access may contribute to differences in these practices. This study aimed to assess and compare maternal KAP regarding complementary feeding in urban and rural areas of Ranchi district, Jharkhand, using

Health system barriers to access and use of magnesium sulfate for women with severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia in Pakistan: evidence for policy and practice.

Severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are rare but serious complications of pregnancy that threaten the lives of mothers during childbirth. Evidence supports the use of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) as the first line treatment option for severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Eclampsia is the third major cause of maternal mortality in Pakistan. As in many other Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), it is suspected that MgSO4 is critically under-utilized in the country. There is however a lack of information on context-specific health system barriers that prevent optimal use of this life-saving medici

Vices and vegetables: a systematic review and series of meta-analyses examining the relationships among compensatory health beliefs with health-related intentions and behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory health beliefs (CHBs), the belief that a healthy behavior can offset the effects of a health-compromising one, have been theorized to both justify unhealthy behaviors and motivate health-promoting ones. However, findings in the literature are inconsistent. METHODS: These meta-analyses synthesized 252 effect sizes from 59 independent samples using robust variance estimation to examine the relationships between CHBs and four outcomes: intentions and engagement in compensatory health behaviors and intentions and engagement in health-compromising behaviors. RESULTS: Appr

Effectiveness of oral cancer training programs for frontline health workers: A systematic review and meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer represents a significant public health burden globally, with multiple challenges to its effective control particularly in developing economies. Despite established risk factors, early detection remains suboptimal, resulting in poor prognosis and increased mortality. This review aimed to systematically synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of training programs for frontline health workers in improving oral cancer screening outcomes. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus, Cochrane by two independent investigators using defined

Tailoring educational interventions targeting parental vaccine hesitancy: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood vaccines, such as those to prevent tetanus (DTaP/Tdap), human papillomavirus (HPV) or hepatitis B (Hep B), have proven to be an effective strategy in preventing long-term diseases arising from injuries, such as puncture wounds, cuts or burns (e.g., DTaP/Tdap vaccine) or risky sexual behavior in adolescence (e.g., HPV or Hep B vaccines). However, despite national child immunization policies, parental vaccine hesitancy, defined as a delay in accepting or a refusal of available vaccinations, still represents a major social issue, resulting in reduced adherence to numerous

Factors influencing vaccine uptake during pregnancy: A systematic literature review.

A systematic literature review was conducted to build a comprehensive evidence base of qualitative/quantitative studies to identify barriers and enablers influencing maternal immunization (MI). Searches of seven databases on 20/10/2023 and 26/10/2023 yielded 87,367 records. Two reviewers performed full-text screening of 484 records. English-language articles from countries that had national recommendations for pertussis-containing maternal vaccines and reported on maternal vaccine acceptance, trust, and hesitancy were eligible. Overall, 184 studies were included. Barriers involving individual

Parental Literacy on Adolescent Substance Use: A Crucial Yet Overlooked Factor.

Adolescent substance use (SU) presents a significant public health challenge that affects physical, psychological, and social well-being. Parents hold a vital role in recognizing early warning signs and facilitating intervention, yet parents' knowledge and ability to identify SU-related symptoms, locate trustworthy information, or navigate available treatment options (SU literacy) remain largely unexamined. This commentary explores the importance of parental SU literacy, the obstacles impeding it, and possible strategies to enhance parental awareness. Many parents encounter difficulties in rec

Enhancing young people's pregnancy loss and fertility awareness and knowledge via schools: a way forward.

Pregnancy and infant loss, in the form of miscarriage, stillbirth or early neonatal death, occurs in 20-25% of all pregnancies. Despite its prevalence and associated physical and psychological impacts, there remains a lack of public awareness and understanding of pregnancy loss, including amongst people of reproductive age. Drawing on evidence from a preliminary review of peer-reviewed and grey literature, we make the case for enhancing pregnancy loss and (in)fertility awareness, specifically focusing on young people in second-level education. We situate our work within reproductive health and
