The perspectives of formerly homeless, older women are absent in the academic literature on aging and homelessness. In this study, a group of formerly homeless women, aged 45 years and older were surveyed (N = 15) and interviewed (n = 11) about their experiences with health, housing, and aging. The qualitative themes to be explored include the women's perceptions of their current health, coping with low incomes, dealing with addictions to alcohol and drugs, and the importance of supportive housing and other community services. The female participants' views on adapting to home, planning for th

INTRODUCTION: Husbands can play a crucial role in pregnancy and childbirth, especially in patriarchal societies of developing countries. In Myanmar, despite the critical influence of husbands on the health of mothers and newborns, their roles in maternal health have not been well explored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the factors associated with husbands' involvement in maternal health in Myanmar. This study also examined the associations between husbands' involvement and their spouses' utilization of maternal care services during antenatal, delivery and postnatal periods.

BACKGROUND: Most mental health difficulties (MHD) emerge during adolescence and early adulthood, placing young people at an increased risk for co-occurring physical and sexual health challenges. Shared models of care (SMOC) to connect specialist mental health care with physical and/or sexual health have been developed to address these health needs among young people with MHD. We aimed to identify and characterise SMOC that integrate physical and/or sexual healthcare for young people with MHD, and to synthesise SMOC implementation determinants using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation

Young women's experiences with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) stigma may contribute to unintended pregnancy. Thus, stigma interventions and rigorous measures to assess their impact are needed. Based on formative work, we generated a pool of 51 items on perceived stigma around different dimensions of adolescent SRH and family planning (sex, contraception, pregnancy, childbearing, abortion). We tested items in a survey study of 1,080 women ages 15 to 24 recruited from schools, health facilities, and universities in Ghana. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) identified the most conceptually

BACKGROUND: Rural caregivers experience significant financial stressors while caring for their older family members with chronic illnesses. Limited access to care, support, and resources in rural areas poses significant financial threats and insecurity for some caregivers. As the majority of rural family caregivers are women, these challenges also represent gender disparities, role imbalances, and division of labor in the society that has rarely been explored in the literature from a rural context. To address these gaps, our study aims to explore the lived experiences of financial burdens and

BACKGROUND: Palliative care needs are prevalent among nursing home (NH) residents. However, access to and integration of palliative care services remain limited. NHs often rely on a workforce with varying levels of training and exposure to palliative care, which may influence care quality and consistency. Understanding the perspectives of NH personnel across disciplines about palliative care is essential to developing sustainable models of care.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of clinical employees (N = 398) at seven NHs within a single integrated health system in New York Stat

BACKGROUND: The global polio eradication initiative has made giant stride by achieving a 99% reduction in Wild poliovirus (WPV) cases, with Nigeria on the verge of being declared polio-free following over 36 months without a WPV. The initiative has provided multiple resources, assets and lessons learnt that could be transitioned to other public health challenges, including improving the quality and vaccination coverage of measles campaigns in order to reduce the incidences of measles in Nigeria. We documented the polio legacy and assets used to support the national measles campaign in 2017/201

Background/Objectives: An individual's genetic makeup influences their organ development, orofacial structures, and overall health. Though many studies have been conducted to determine the inheritance of oral diseases and conditions, there is a lack of comprehensive research classifying these disorders based on the genetic and environmental etiology. Methods: This systematic review aimed to analyze the existing body of literature using the PubMed and Cochrane databases and answer the following question: "What evidence exists supporting the role of genetic factors in oral conditions?" This syst

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis, affecting 1-4% of adolescents. The Scoliosis Research Society-22R (SRS-22R), a health-related quality-of-life instrument for AIS, has allowed orthopedists to measure subjective patient outcomes before and after corrective surgery beyond objective radiographic measurements. However, research has revealed that there is no significant correlation between the correction rate in major radiographic parameters and improvements in patient-reported outcomes (PROs), making it difficult to incorporate PROs into person

OBJECTIVE: Cancer survivors play an important role in coordinating their follow-up care and making treatment-related decisions. Little is known about how modifiable factors such as social support are associated with active participation in follow-up care. This study tests associations between social support, cancer-related follow-up care use, and self-efficacy for participation in decision-making related to follow-up care (SEDM). We also identified sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with social support among long-term survivors.
METHODS: The FOllow-up Care Use among Survivors st

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy affects 1% of the US population, imposing a significant burden through seizures, distress and medication side effects. Many adverse outcomes can be reduced with patient education and an acute seizure action plan. Electronic health record clinical templates can support this care but are often seen as burdensome. This study will develop a clinical template embedding an acute seizure action plan into routine neurology visits and examine its effect on care quality and healthcare use, as well as barriers and facilitators to adoption.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a sin

As we commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and celebrate important milestones that have been achieved by the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences (DCVS), it is imperative that DCVS and the Extramural Research community at-large continue to address critical public health challenges that persist within the area of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD). The NHLBI's Strategic Vision, developed with extensive input from the extramural research community and published in 2016, included overarching goals and strategic objectives that serve to provide a gene

BACKGROUND: Youth (aged 15-24 years) diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) experience higher rates of co-occurring mental health challenges and disparities in receiving timely care. A significant barrier to support is a lack of guidance for healthcare professionals (HCPs) on delivering conversations about co-occurring mental health for youth with NDD. Limited guidance is amplified by a paucity of research which has included youths' perspectives on how to speak to them about co-occurring mental health challenges. There is a need for research to include the voices of youth with NDD t

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is most prevalent amongst people from minority ethnic groups and people receiving haemodialysis were considered to be ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ during the Covid- 19 pandemic. Covid-19 impacted the health of those from ethnically diverse backgrounds disproportionally. The Covid-19 pandemic brought death and dying to the forefront of public discourse, yet few studies have explored the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on individual’s understanding of and willingness to engage in end-of-life care planning conversations. In addition, few studies ha

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a qualitative study to elicit patients' descriptions of their own experiences with treatment for hepatitis C (HCV).
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted until thematic saturation was reached.
RESULTS: A total of 40 patients (80% male) participated in eight focus groups. The themes that emerged most frequently during the focus groups centered on adverse effects and quality of care. The discussions highlighted discrepancies between patients' anticipated effects of drug toxicity versus their actual experiences, gaps in communication between physicians, and the lack of soci
