Hearing loss is a debilitating disease that affects 10% of adults worldwide. Most sensorineural hearing loss is caused by the loss of mechanosensitive hair cells in the cochlea, often due to aging, noise, and ototoxic drugs. The identification of genes that can be targeted to slow aging and reduce the vulnerability of hair cells to insults is critical for the prevention of sensorineural hearing loss. Our previous cell-specific transcriptome analysis of adult cochlear hair cells and supporting cells showed that Clu, encoding a secreted chaperone that is involved in several basic biological even

Military personnel are at increased risk of asymmetric hearing loss secondary to noise exposure. This report illustrates the importance of expeditiously evaluating for retrocochlear pathology even in young active duty service members with asymmetric or sudden hearing loss. A 36-year-old male presented with right-sided sudden hearing loss and dizziness. Audiometry revealed profound mid-to-high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear. A 10-day course of oral steroid therapy and two intratympanic steroid injections were unsuccessful in restoring hearing. MRI revealed a 4.2 cm contra

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a frequent problem in Indonesia but its treatment is still limited. This type of hearing loss is related to oxidative stress and decreased vascularization, which can damage the hair cell. The intra-arterial heparin flushing (IAHF) is a procedure that can recover circulation and its agent, namely heparin, also has antioxidant activity. Therefore, the IAHF procedure has the potential to improve hearing function and can be considered an alternative therapy for SNHL.
OBJECTIVE: The study evaluates the effect of the IAHF on hearing improvement based

The present study was to investigate the dynamics of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) and hearing function, and explore whether the hearing loss is caused by EH alone and whether the hearing function can be modulated by changes in the EH. The extent of EH visualized by gadolinium (Gd)-enhanced inner ear magnetic resonance imaging, hearing thresholds and the summating potential/action potential ratio (-SP/AP ratio) of electrocochleography (ECochG) were recorded prior to and following surgery in 22 patients with intractable Meniere's disease (MD) who underwent endolymphatic duct blockage (EDB). It is well established that hearing loss can lead to widespread plasticity within the central auditory pathway, which is thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of audiological conditions such as tinnitus and hyperacusis. Emerging evidence suggests that hearing loss can also result in plasticity within brain regions involved in higher-level cognitive functioning like the prefrontal cortex; findings which may underlie the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment documented in epidemiological studies. Using the 40-Hz auditory steady state response to assess sound-evoked gam

Age-related hearing loss is one of the most prevalent health conditions in older adults. Although hearing aid technology has advanced dramatically, a large percentage of older adults do not use hearing aids. This untreated hearing loss may accelerate declines in cognitive and neural function and dramatically affect the quality of life. Our previous findings have shown that the use of hearing aids improves cortical and cognitive function and offsets subcortical physiological decline. The current study tested the time course of neural adaptation to hearing aids over the course of 6 months and ai

Thresholds of hearing as a function of age and sex for screened, or 'otologically normal', persons have been standardised (ISO 7029) on the basis of a study by Robinson and Sutton (1978). For purposes such as the evaluation of hearing loss due to noise exposure in industrial populations, it is not generally realistic to compare the hearing thresholds to an age-matched 'otologically normal' baseline, since the difference will include adventitious hearing loss as well as the noise-related components. This paper presents typical data for an unscreened population, in a companion form to ISO 7029.

Hearing loss is often regarded as "invisible disability" which seriously affects the quality of life. The majority of hearing loss cases are caused by the damage to inner ear hair cells or connected spiral ganglion cells, and there is a lack of effective treatment measures. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the use of two-dimensional (2D) culture systems to induce the regeneration of auditory cells. However, the regenerated hair cells cannot form effective functional ciliary bundles under the 2D system, let alone establish synaptic contact with spiral ganglion cells, so th

Diaphanous related formins are regulatory cytoskeletal protein involved in actin elongation and microtubule stabilization. In humans, defects in two of the three diaphanous genes (DIAPH1 and DIAPH3) have been associated with different types of hearing loss. Here, we investigate the role of the third member of the family, DIAPH2, in nonsyndromic hearing loss, prompted by the identification, by exome sequencing, of a predicted pathogenic missense variant in DIAPH2. This variant occurs at a conserved site and segregated with nonsyndromic X-linked hearing loss in an Italian family. Our immunohisto

Generation and persistence of tinnitus following hearing loss may be due to aberrant engagement of attention. Here, functional MRI was used to determine differences in auditory and visual attention processing in adults with tinnitus and hearing loss compared to two age-matched control groups, one with matched hearing loss and the other with normal hearing thresholds. Attentional processing was investigated using a short-term memory task with varying loads, employing unfamiliar Korean letters in the visual condition and non-speech sounds in the auditory condition. We found similar behavioral re

This study assessed normal frequency discrimination ability in the chinchilla and determined how this ability changes as a function of an experimentally induced sensorineural hearing loss. Four chinchillas were trained by the methods of positive reinforcement to report absolute thresholds and frequency difference limens (FDLs). Subjects were then treated with the aminoglycosidic antibiotic amikacin until a 30-dB hearing loss was measured at 10.0 kHz. Absolute and frequency difference thresholds were determined during and after drug treatment. When post-drug thresholds had stabilized, subjects

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The incidence of acute low-frequency hearing loss has gradually increased in recent years. However, its specific etiology and pathophysiology remain largely unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic factors of acute low-frequency sensorineural hearing loss.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were grouped based on post-treatment pure-tone hearing thresholds: complete, marked, and slight recovery, or no change. We analyzed correlations between prognosis and age, sex, affected side, pathogenesis, underlying diseases, onset days, dizziness, deg

Auditory function takes a major part in human life. While sensorineural hearing loss is related with many factors including genetic disorders, age and noise, the clear causes are not well understood. Even more, the currently available treatments with drugs cause side effects, which thus are considered suboptimal. Here, we communicate the delivery systems with biomaterials that can be possible therapeutic options to restore hearing and vestibular functions. We introduce briefly the various pathological factors related with hearing loss and the limitation of current therapies, detail the recent

Hereditary hearing loss stands as the most prevalent sensory disorder, with over 124 non-syndromic genes and approximately 400 syndromic forms of deafness identified in humans. The clinical presentation of these conditions spans a spectrum, ranging from mild to profound hearing loss. The aim of this study was to identify the genetic cause of hearing loss in a family and functionally validate a novel variant identified in the MYO6 gene. After Whole Exome Sequencing analysis, the variant c.2775G>C p.Arg925Ser in MYO6 was detected in a family with postlingual non-syndromic hearing loss. By protei

Sudden hearing loss (SHL) is a neurosensorial hearing loss of variable entity with an onset of less than three days. In most cases (85-90%) it is of unknown etiology (idiopathic sudden hearing loss--ISHL). The most accredited hypotheses for origin are: viral, immunitary and vascular. ISHL accounts for approximately 1% of all neurosensorial hearing loss; onset is most frequent in winter, i.e. January and February, and it most frequently affects women, particularly at 15 and between 40-50 years of age. In order to evaluate the role of vascular condition on the onset of ISHL, we focused our atten
