Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is rarely the cause of pneumonia in immunocompetent patients. We describe a previously healthy child, with no evidence of an immunodeficiency, who presented to the emergency department with severe pneumonia, wheezing, and pleural effusions with a history of orolabial HSV infection. On admission, he was started on antibiotics and systemic corticosteroids but continued to deteriorate. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 73-year-old woman who was diagnosed with herpes simplex virus-1 encephalitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. The diagnosis was somehow delayed because relatives were initially cautious in bringing the patient to the hospital and, here, the work-up focus was on coronavirusrelated aspects as the patient was initially reputed to be infected with COVID-19.
CONCLUSIONS: During the current viral outbreak, physicians should not neglect the possibility of other diseases that represent neurological emergencies and require immediate recognition and treatment.

Congenital cytomegalovirus infections are among the most common of the newborn in the developed world. These infections are the most common cause of sensorineural hearing loss. Studies utilizing ganciclovir and valganciclovir demonstrate improved hearing and Bailey Developmental scores. Because of the ease of administration, valganciclovir is the recommended treatment of choice for 6 months. Therapy should be reserved for those babies with symptomatic disease; no data are available regarding the impact of treatment on those babies with asymptomatic disease.

Dilated funduscopic examination showed retinitis and occlusive vasculitis with retinal necrosis. We present the case of a 42-year-old man with AIDS who had lost complete vision of his left eye for the past 15 days. Fulminant herpes simplex virus (HSV) hepatitis is a rare condition, which is usually identified only after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) or at autopsy. The most commonly affected individuals are immunosuppressed patients, although HSV hepatitis can occur in immunocompetent patients as well. A high degree of suspicion combined with early diagnostic modalities may improve survival. We present a case report of fulminant herpetic hepatitis, requiring OLT. In addition, a review of the literature was performed.

We report a challenging case of an atypical presentation of recrudescent herpes simplex virus infection in a patient with common variable immunodeficiency. Oral infections in immunosuppressed patients may present with unusual clinical features that can mimic non-infectious diseases.
