The purpose of this study was to explore potential differences in health behaviors and outcomes of sexual minority women (SMW) of color compared to White SMW, heterosexual women of color, and White heterosexual women. Data from 4878 women were extracted from the 2011 to 2016 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. The four-category independent variable (SMW of color, White SMW, heterosexual women of color, and White heterosexual women) was included in binary and multinomial logistic regression models predicting fair/poor self-reported health status, depression, cigarette smoking, a

OBJECTIVES: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults report poorer mental health than their cisgender-heterosexual peers. Age discrimination may be a mechanism underlying these disparities. The current study examined whether SGM older adults reported more age discrimination and, in turn, higher depression and anxiety, compared to cisgender-heterosexual older adults.
METHODS: As part of a larger study, 744 older adults (aged ≥ 50; M = 58.4, SD = 6.23) completed an online survey in September 2021. The survey included measures of depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-8), anxiety (General

OBJECTIVES: Despite early treatment of urethral infection, gonorrhoea is endemic in urban populations of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Australia. By contrast, gonorrhoea is not common in urban heterosexual populations. Sexual activities among MSM usually involve anal or oral sex, and as these behaviours are becoming increasingly common among heterosexuals, there is a need to investigate their roles in transmission of gonorrhoea.
METHODS: We developed individual-based models of transmission of gonorrhoea in MSM and heterosexuals that incorporate anatomical site-specific transmission of go

PURPOSE: A recent study found a disproportionate number of pregnancies among Euro-American lesbian and bisexual adolescents compared to heterosexual peers. American Indian adolescents have reported higher prevalence of gay/lesbian/bisexual orientations than Euro-Americans; do they also report higher prevalence of pregnancy?
METHODS: The study assessed prevalence of teen pregnancy and related factors by sexual orientation among sexually experienced, reservation-based American Indian adolescent males (n = 2056) and females (n = 1693) who participated in a national school-based survey in 1991. S

BACKGROUND: While preliminary research suggests non-heterosexual men and women view more pornography than their heterosexual counterparts, few studies have examined how problematic use differs across sexual and gender identity groups.
AIM: We sought to test measurement invariance across popular measures of problematic pornography use (PPU) and examine mean PPU differences across heterosexual men, non-heterosexual men, heterosexual women, and non-heterosexual women.
METHODS: We used 3 large archival datasets to examine psychometrics/group differences on the Brief Pornography Screen (BPS; N =

This study investigated whether heterosexual males are more likely to regret sex reassignment surgery than homosexual males or females. Subjects were 111 postoperative transsexuals who had been surgically reassigned for at least one year, representing a follow-up rate of 84.1%. Subjects' feelings about surgery were assessed with self-administered questionnaires. None of the 61 homosexual females or 36 homosexual males consciously regretted surgery, compared to 4 of the 14 heterosexual males: a significant difference. This finding suggests that heterosexual applicants for sex reassignment shoul

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals report higher levels of depression and anxiety than heterosexual people. Genetic factors may be a 'common cause' of sexual minority status and psychological distress. Alternatively, these may be correlated because of non-genetic environmental factors (e.g. minority stressors). This study investigated minority stressors and distress in monozygotic twins discordant for sexual minority status. This design provides a test of the role of non-shared environmental factors while minimizing differences due to genetics.
METHODS: Thirty-eight twin

PURPOSE: To describe patterns of purging and binge eating from early through late adolescence in female and male youth across a range of sexual orientations.
METHODS: Using data from the prospective Growing Up Today Study, a large cohort of U.S. youth, we investigated trends in past-year self-reports of purging (ever vomit or use laxatives for weight control) and binge eating at least monthly. The analytic sample included 57,668 observations from repeated measures gathered from 13,795 youth aged 12-23 years providing information collected by self-administered questionnaires from six waves of

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a minority sexual orientation have consistently been found to face a greater risk of mental health problems and problematic substance use than heterosexual individuals. The present study examined whether differences in alcohol use or alcohol use disorder (AUD) symptoms across the spectrum of sexual orientations could be explained by drinking motives (i.e., enhancement, social, coping and conformity motives).
METHOD: A non-self-selective sample of non-abstinent, young Swiss men (N = 5,139; mean age = 25.4, SD = 1.25) completed a self-reporting questionnaire on sexu

Purpose: The purpose of this review was to compare differences in Papanicolaou (pap) test rates between sexual minority women (SMW) and heterosexual women. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched from inception until June 2020 for articles reporting pap test rates among SMW. Studies were selected if they included pap test rates for SMW with a comparison rate for heterosexual women; studies were excluded if they did not report pap test rates. A quality assessment scale was used to assess study quality. A random-effects model was employed to calculate pooled odds ratios (ORs) for each

OBJECTIVES: To describe sexual and HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) risk behaviours in Slovenia.
METHODS: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey of the general population aged 18-49 years in 1999-2001 was conducted. The data were collected by face-to-face interviews and anonymous self-administered questionnaires. Statistical methods for complex survey data were used.
RESULTS: 849 men and 903 women were interviewed. In the past 5 years, both men and women reported a median of one heterosexual partner (means 3.2, 1.5, respectively), concurrent heterosexual partnerships were

CONTEXT: Although a limited amount of research has retrospectively explored the childhood and adolescent heterosexual experiences of lesbians, little is known about the prevalence of heterosexual behavior and related risk factors or about pregnancy histories among lesbian and bisexual teenagers.
METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted using responses from a subsample of 3,816 students who completed the 1987 Minnesota Adolescent Health Survey. Behaviors, risk factors and pregnancy histories were compared among adolescents who identified themselves as lesbian or bisexual, as unsure of their

Most studies of the spread of HIV infection have centred on homosexuals and intravenous drug users. To estimate the extent of infection in different groups, including heterosexuals, the prevalence of HIV antibody was studied in 34,222 subjects tested with consent between October 1986 and December 1987 in England. These included subjects in high risk groups for HIV infection, heterosexuals with partners in the high risk groups and heterosexuals with multiple partners or with no identifiable risk factors. The prevalence was highest in homosexual or bisexual men in London (15.1%; 213/1412), being

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of crack cocaine use in an HIV-infected population and to examine the association between crack use after HIV diagnosis and high-risk sexual behaviors for heterosexual men, heterosexual women, and men who have sex with men (MSM).
METHODS: Analysis of cross-sectional interviews conducted from January 1995 through December 1998 with HIV infected adults in 12 states.
RESULTS: Of 10,415 persons with HIV or AIDS, 66.6% never used crack, 10.7% used crack before HIV diagnosis but not after, and 22.7% used crack after diagnosis. High-risk sexual behaviors were m

OBJECTIVE: To determine trends in HIV prevalence among attenders of a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases (STD), with emphasis on heterosexuals who did not have a history of injecting drug use.
METHODS: Anonymous unlinked HIV surveys with individual consent, conducted each half year from 1991 to 1996 (except 1993) among STD clinic attenders who came for evaluation of a possible new STD episode.
RESULTS: Of 10,940 eligible attenders 10,046 (92%) accepted HIV testing. Of all tested attenders, 312 (3.1%) were HIV-infected. Overall HIV prevalence decreased significantly from 4.6% in 1991 to

OBJECTIVES: Canadian population-based data show that sexually diverse youth face greater mental health challenges than their heterosexual peers. However, nuances within sexual diversity-particularly among mostly heterosexual persons-are overlooked, and psychotic-like experiences remain underexplored. We examined the mental health of sexually diverse young adults from Quebec, spanning indicators from well-being to psychotic-like experiences.
METHODS: Data were drawn from 1324 youth from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development-a representative cohort born in 1997/98 and followed up u

BACKGROUND: Disparities in suicidal ideation (SI) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are evident in both Native American and minoritized sexual identity groups, relative to non-Hispanic White and heterosexual groups. However, Native Americans report lower drinking and binge drinking rates than White adults. Persons with intersecting identities, specifically Native Americans with minoritized sexual identities, may be at greater risk for SI and drinking, binge drinking, and AUD than White and Native American heterosexual adults.

OBJECTIVES: Although hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination for high-risk groups including gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) is recommended in the UK, data on HBV immunisation coverage are limited. This study aimed to understand the prevalence of HBV infection, susceptibility and immunity due to immunisation among a high-risk population of MSM and heterosexuals who are less likely to attend sexual health services.
METHODS: Residual HIV-negative serology samples archived from a national HIV self-sampling service in 2016 were tested for HBV markers using an unlinked anonymous

OBJECTIVE: Research has documented that sexual minorities are at greater risk for substance use than heterosexuals. However, there are limited studies and mixed findings when investigating these health disparities among racial and ethnic minority samples. We used an intersectionality framework to examine disparities in lifetime substance use problems between heterosexual and sexual minority men and women and within sexual minority groups among a racially diverse sample.
METHOD: A nonprobability sample of heterosexual (n = 1,091) and sexual minority (n = 1,465) patients from an urban community
