Respiratory RNA viruses extensively reprogram host regulatory networks, thereby influencing viral replication, immune evasion, and disease severity. This review examines microRNAs (miRNAs) as regulatory interfaces in host-virus interactions, focusing on influenza A virus as a paradigmatic model while integrating evidence from other respiratory RNA viruses as SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory syncytial virus. After outlining canonical miRNA biogenesis and its manipulation during infection, we discuss how respiratory RNA viruses converge on shared miRNA-regulated pathways, including interferon and NF-κ

BACKGROUND: Parasite proteases have important roles in cleavage of host proteins during the invasion of host tissues and participate in the parasite's evasion from the host's immune response. The aim of the present study was to estimate a metalloproteinase properties of Taenia solium metacestode (TsMP) during host-parasite interactions, and evaluate its potential as a serodiagnostic antigen for cysticercosis.
METHODS: The cDNA coding for the mature catalytic domain of TsMP was cloned into pGEX-6P-1 expression vector. A recombinant glutathione S-transferase and TsMP fusion protein was induced.

This review outlines the metabolism of polyamines in African trypanosomes and summarizes evidence to indicate that trypanosome polyamine metabolism differs in several important aspects from that of the mammalian host. These differences relate to the halflife, turnover, substrate specificity and regulation of enzymes within the mainstream of polyamine synthesis and the related pathway of transmethylation. The common denominator for the uniqueness of parasite polyamine metabolism concerns S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) whose synthesis is unregulated and, upon accumulating in the cell, appears to

Fungal plant pathogens secrete proteins that manipulate the host in order to facilitate colonization. Necrotrophs have evolved specialized proteins that actively induce plant cell death by co-opting the programmed cell death machinery of the host. Besides the broad host range pathogen Botrytis cinerea, most other species within the genus Botrytis are restricted to a single host species or a group of closely related hosts. Here, we focused on Botrytis squamosa and B. elliptica, host specific pathogens of onion (Allium cepa) and lily (Lilium spp.), respectively. Despite their occurrence on diffe

Viroids are a serious threat to plant health due to their broad host range, high infectivity, and latent infections. Europe's heterogeneous climate, ecology, and agriculture make it a key setting for viroid research. Despite numerous country- and host-specific reports, a continental synthesis has been lacking. In this study, we systematically collected all available official records of plant viroids in Europe from 1972 to 2025. A total of 255 documents were analyzed, encompassing 35 countries of the European continent and 118 host plant species, classified by host use (cultivated, ornamental,

UNLABELLED: Three novel Klebsiella phages, PMBT12, PMBT63, and PMBT64, were isolated and characterized. The phages revealed distinct morphologies, phylogenetic backgrounds, and a high degree of genomic divergence. PMBT12 and PMBT64 exhibited narrow host ranges, whereas PMBT63 demonstrated a broader host range across the tested Klebsiella strains with diverse sequence and capsule types. PMBT63 possesses a large genome that approaches the size of jumbo T4-like phages, encodes 16 tRNAs, and exhibits high thermal stability up to 70°C. A conserved Hoc-like protein in PMBT63 was identified and struc

Plasmid host range (PHR) plays a key role in the spread of ecologically important genes, alongside applications in microbiome engineering and environmental biotechnology. PHR is a complex trait arising from the combination of plasmid, donor and recipient properties. Most studies of PHR use a single donor strain, leaving the role of the donor unexplored and often require genetically tagged recipient strains for counter-selection, which limits the use of non-genetically tractable strains. Here, we applied auxotrophic donor counter-selection in a relatively high-throughput and accessible screenin

Avian Plasmodium parasites can be pathogenic to their vertebrate hosts. Although cases of anaemia are frequently reported in parasitized birds, the potential damage caused by the parasite during the exoerythrocytic reproduction phase remains poorly investigated. Here, we report 2 individuals of red-legged seriemas (Cariama cristata) infected with 2 different lineages of Plasmodium huffi, one of them exhibiting potential malarial-compatible tissue lesions in the spleen, liver, brain and lungs, alongside molecular confirmation of parasite presence in the spleen. Previously classified as specific

R-pyocins are phage tail-like protein complexes produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa that deliver a single, lethal hit by depolarizing the target cell membrane. Unlike phages, R-pyocins lack capsids and DNA, and their killing is highly specific, being determined by tail fibre proteins that recognize subtype-specific LPS receptors on susceptible strains. Five known subtypes (R1-R5) vary in host range, with R5 displaying the broadest activity. R-pyocin expression is tightly regulated by the SOS response, linking their release to environmental stress. Their non-replicative mechanism and metabolic i

Host cells provide intracellular bacteria with protection from harsh environmental conditions and immune responses, but for many intracellular pathogens, this protection does not appear to be absolute as once thought. Bacteriophages that can kill bacteria inside host cells have been identified for pathogens including Salmonella, Mycobacterium, and Chlamydia species. Even in pathogens for which no stable phages have been isolated, such as Legionella pneumophila, the presence of phage defense systems suggests phage susceptibility. Here, we report the stable isolation of Legionella bacteriophage

Control of intracellular pathogens is a critical element of host defense. Defining the molecular mechanisms by which the host restricts or eliminates these pathogens may inform the development of novel immunotherapeutics and antimicrobial strategies, particularly in the face of rising antibiotic resistance. In parallel, understanding how pathogens subvert these immune responses may yield new approaches to disrupt virulence rather than viability. Yet, the precise mechanisms by which primates-and especially humans-achieve intracellular pathogen control remain poorly understood. Five years ago, I

Erwinia amylovora, the causative agent of fire blight, causes significant economic losses for farmers worldwide by inflicting severe damage to the production and quality of plants in the Rosaceae family. Historically, fire blight control has primarily relied on the application of copper compounds and antibiotics, such as streptomycin. However, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains and growing environmental concerns have highlighted the need for alternative control methods. Recently, there has been a growing interest in adopting bacteriophages (phages) as a biological control strategy.

The persistent epidemic of human mpox, caused by mpox virus (MPXV), raises concerns about the future spread of MPXV and other poxviruses. MPXV is a typical zoonotic virus which can infect human and cause smallpox-like symptoms. MPXV belongs to the Poxviridae family, which has a relatively broad host range from arthropods to vertebrates. Cross-species transmission of poxviruses among different hosts has been frequently reported and resulted in numerous epidemics. Poxviruses have a complex linear double-strand DNA genome that encodes hundreds of proteins. Genes related to the host range of poxvi

Salmonella and pathogenic Escherichia coli are important foodborne pathogens. Phages are being recognized as potential antibacterial agents to control foodborne pathogens. In the current study, a polyvalent broad-spectrum phage, GSP044, was isolated from pig farm sewage. It can simultaneously lyse many different serotypes of Salmonella and E. coli, exhibiting a broad host range. Using S. Enteritidis SE006 as the host bacterium, phage GSP044 was further characterized. GSP044 has a short latent period (10 min), high stability at different temperatures and pH, and good tolerance to chloroform. Ge

BACKGROUND: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods which normally attach to the surface of the host's skin. Their aberrant presence in the subcutaneous tissue of a few carnivores, predominantly foxes, has been reported. However, there have been no reports of this phenomenon in other carnivores such as mustelids or golden jackals. Our aim was to investigate the host spectrum for this aberrant localization of ticks.
METHODS: Between 2015 and 2020, a total of 198 carcasses of 12 species of carnivore were examined by parasitological necropsy. When a subcutaneous tick was found, the nodule was removed

The host range of Brucella organisms has expanded from terrestrial and marine mammals to fish and amphibians. The high homology genomes of different Brucella organisms promote us to investigate evolutionary patterns for nucleotide, codon and amino acid usage patterns at gene levels among Brucella species. Although the similar patterns for nucleotide and synonymous codon usages exist in gene population, GC composition at the first codon position has significant correlations to that of the second and third codon positions, respectively, suggesting that nucleotide usages surrounding one codon inf

Atypical brucellae show deviant phenotypes and/or genotypes. Besides Brucella inopinata, B. microti and B. vulpis, atypical strains have been described infecting humans, rodents, amphibians and fish. They represent potential zoonotic agents. Here, we provide evidence that reptiles as the remaining poikilothermic vertebrate class also represent susceptible hosts for atypical Brucella.

Borrelia miyamotoi, a hard tick-borne relapsing fever agent, was sampled in Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus ticks from the Tver province in Russia (a sympatric region of both tick species) and examined by TaqMan-PCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Borrelia was detected in 4 out of 168 ticks: 2 out of 58 I. ricinus ticks (infection rate 2.9%) and 2 out of 110 I. persulcatus ticks (1.8%). The agent was identified as B. miyamotoi on the basis of the 16S and 23S rDNA intergenic spacer and glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase gene sequencing analyses. Interestingly, the genes sequences detect
