Patterns of seed bank and vegetation diversity along a tidal freshwater river.

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Species richness and diversity may increase with spatial scale related to increased area and heterogeneity of habitat. Yet, in bidirectional hydrologically connected tidal ecosystems, secondary dispersal via hydrochory has the potential to homogenize seed banks, and both life history characteristics and tolerances to environmental conditions influence the composition of plant communities. How species richness, diversity, and composition of seed banks and vegetation change along environmental gradients and at different spatial scales is not well understood. METHODS: We ex

Climate-driven terrestrial inputs in ultraoligotrophic mountain streams of Andean Patagonia revealed through chromophoric and fluorescent dissolved organic matter.

Fluvial networks transport a substantial fraction of the terrestrial production, contributing to the global carbon cycle and being shaped by hydrologic, natural and anthropogenic factors. In this investigation, four Andean Patagonian oligotrophic streams connecting a forested catchment (~125km(2)) and draining to a double-basin large and deep lake (Lake Moreno complex, Northwestern Patagonia), were surveyed to analyze the dynamics of the allochthonous subsidy. The results of a 30month survey showed that the catchment supplies nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the streams. The eru

Phosphorus speciation in a eutrophic lake by ³¹P NMR spectroscopy.

For eutrophic lakes, patterns of phosphorus (P) measured by standard methods are well documented but provide little information about the components comprising standard operational definitions. Dissolved P (DP) and particulate P (PP) represents important but rarely characterized nutrient pools. Samples from Lake Mendota, Wisconsin, USA were characterized using 31-phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((31)P NMR) during the open water season of 2011 in this unmatched temporal study of aquatic P dynamics. A suite of organic and inorganic P forms was detected in both dissolved and pa

Spatially explicit modeling of schistosomiasis risk in eastern China based on a synthesis of epidemiological, environmental and intermediate host genetic data.

Schistosomiasis japonica is a major parasitic disease threatening millions of people in China. Though overall prevalence was greatly reduced during the second half of the past century, continued persistence in some areas and cases of re-emergence in others remain major concerns. As many regions in China are approaching disease elimination, obtaining quantitative data on Schistosoma japonicum parasites is increasingly difficult. This study examines the distribution of schistosomiasis in eastern China, taking advantage of the fact that the single intermediate host serves as a major transmission

Sedimentation and trace metal distribution in selected locations of Sundarbans mangroves and Hooghly estuary, northeast coast of India.

Four sediment cores were collected from selected locations of Sundarbans mangroves and Hooghly estuary, northeast coast of India to establish (210)Pb geochronology and trace metal distribution in sediments. Core sites were chosen to reflect a matrix of variable anthropogenic input and hydrological conditions. The vertical distribution of (210)Pb(xs) ((210)Pb(total)-(226)Ra) provided reliable geochronological age to calculate the mass accumulation rates and historic trace element inputs and their variations. The mass accumulation rates ranged from 0.41 g cm(-2) year(-1) (estuarine region) to 0.

Experimental Investigation of the Impact of Mixed Wettability on Pore-Scale Fluid Displacement: A Microfluidic Study.

Understanding rock wettability is crucial across various fields including hydrology, subsurface fluid storage and extraction, and environmental sciences. In natural subsurface formations like carbonate and shale, mixed wettability is frequently observed, characterized by heterogeneous regions at the pore scale that exhibit both hydrophilic (water-wet) and hydrophobic (oil-wet) characteristics. Despite its common occurrence, the impact of mixed wettability on immiscible fluid displacement at the pore scale remains poorly understood, creating a gap in effective modeling and prediction of fluid b…

Nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics of a re-wetted shallow-flooded peatland.

Minerotrophic peatlands play an important role in the regulation of water quality and quantity but due to drainage and agricultural land use … rient dynamics and the absolute and relative balances between the polders were due to the different hydrology: the eastpolder received a high nitrate load by the stream, in the westpolder nutrient loads are low and internal nutrient cycles are dominating. During the summer months, high ammonium concentrations, oxygen depletion, and phosphate release occur i …

Patterns and Drivers of Sustainable Agricultural Practice Adoption Among Mennonite Farmers in a Closed Endorheic Basin of Northern Mexico.

Agricultural sustainability in closed endorheic basins is constrained by periodic water scarcity, hydrological isolation, and the cumulative effects of intensive land use. The Cuauhtémoc region of northern Mexico hosts long-established Mennonite farming communities whose mechanized and irrigation-dependent agriculture constitutes an important component of the regional economy and resource-use system. This study examined the prevalence, diversity, and drivers of sustainable agricultural practices among 95 Mennonite farmers in the Bustillos Lagoon region. Thirteen practices spanning soil and res

Organ type governs macrophyte decomposition while inundation status drives the decoupling of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus release in lake wetlands.

Macrophyte-derived organic carbon potentially contributes 66-85% of carbon turnover in lake wetlands. However, the carbon and nutrient fate of its debris decomposition remain elusive, particularly under extreme hydrological regimes. Here, we conducted a 150-day aquatic mesocosm experiment simulating the decomposition of Phragmites australis debris to explore how organ-specific structural traits (leaves, stems, and roots) interact with inundation conditions (Floating, Submerged) to affect debris decomposition and aquatic C release, as well as nutrient dynamics. Our results demonstrate that debr

Halogenated dissolved organic matter regulates bacterial community composition and organic carbon transformation in aquatic ecosystems.

Bacteria-dissolved organic matter (DOM) interactions profoundly influence organic carbon fate along the land-ocean aquatic continuum. Halogenated DOM (H-DOM) is recognized as a widespread component of the DOM pool in natural waters, but its interactions with bacterial communities and ecological functions remain poorly understood. Using non-targeted ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry and amplicon sequencing, we characterized H-DOM, non-halogenated DOM (N-DOM), and bacterial communities across three hydrological seasons in the Minjiang River, the largest mountainous river in southeastern Ch

[Mechanisms of seasonal precipitation variability regulating the provenance and stabilization pathways of soil organic carbon fractions in estuarine wetlands].

Traditional carbon cycle research in estuarine wetlands has mostly been confined to static observations of interannual total precipitation and total carbon, struggling to reveal the hidden risks of carbon destabilization triggered by extreme hydrological pulses. Recently, studies have achieved critical transitions from macroscopic factors to microscopic mechanisms, and from single interfaces to multi-interface coupling. We examined the cascading feedback theories of seasonal rainfall variation on soil organic carbon dynamics in estuarine wetlands. The academic community has gradually clarified

Identification, quantification, and management of human health risks from long-distance pesticide transport.

BACKGROUND: Human health risks associated with long-distance pesticide transport are increasingly recognized but remain insufficiently assessed. Traditional assessments have focused on local applications, whereas growing evidence shows that pesticides can travel across large regions through air, water systems, and trade networks, leading to human exposure far from the original pesticide sources. In response, this study aims to propose an integrated conceptual framework that can identify key transport pathways, clarify long-distance risk, and explore methods for quantifying exposure across inte

Three Gorges Dam-driven redistribution, sediment-water partitioning, and health risks of heavy metals in the Yangtze River.

The Three Gorges Dam (TGD), the largest hydraulic project on the Yangtze River mainstream, has altered hydrodynamic regimes and sediment transport. However, how its interplay with basin-scale pollution control policies regulates heavy metal behavior remains poorly understood. The spatiotemporal dynamics of eight priority heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn) in surface water and sediments along the Yangtze mainstream from 2016 to 2022 were investigated, with the TGD employed as a critical hydrological boundary. Sediment-water partition coefficients were calculated, geo‑accumulation and

Spatiotemporal patterns of bacterial communities and their responses to environmental gradients in a river-reservoir system.

River-reservoir systems generate strong hydrological and environmental heterogeneity, often associated with shifts in bacterial communities, yet how spatiotemporal environmental differences jointly shape community variation, assembly processes, and co-occurrence patterns remains poorly resolved at the system scale. Here, we combined 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing with water-quality measurements to characterize bacterial dynamics across sampled riverine and reservoir sections of the Hanjiang River (China) during contrasting seasons. Community composition and diversity differed across

Land-use-dependent source apportionment around a closed Pb-Zn tailings pond: Integrating PMF, Pb isotopes and MixSIAR model.

Legacy Pb-Zn tailings ponds can remain long-term sources of heavy metal(loid) contamination even after mine closure, but distinguishing direct source inputs from secondary redistribution pathways remains challenging in small and heterogeneous rural landscapes. This study investigated topsoil contamination around a closed Pb-Zn tailings pond in Xiangtan County, Hunan Province, China, where farmland, woodland, irrigation canals, village roads and residual tailings-related materials occur in close proximity. Elemental concentrations, spatial interpolation, positive matrix factorization (PMF), Pb

Historical evolution and future trends of land cover patterns and structural ecological connectivity in the China-Russia Xingkai Lake Basin.

Transboundary wetlands are essential for regional ecological security, yet their landscape structure and connectivity are increasingly altered by land use change. We quantified land cover dynamics, landscape reorganization, and structural ecological connectivity in the China-Russia Xingkai Lake Basin during 2000-2025 and projected changes to 2050. Landsat-based land cover maps were generated using a random forest classifier. Landscape configuration was characterized using PD, LPI, ED, and COHESION, whereas structural ecological connectivity was quantified using the integral index of connectivi

Particle-size control of radionuclide enrichment and environmental risk pathways in slurry from the Wandan mud volcano.

Mud volcanism acts as a natural conduit for transporting deep geological materials, saline fluids, and naturally occurring radionuclides to the surface, potentially generating complex environmental hazards. Despite extensive research on the geochemistry of mud volcanoes, the role of particle-size-dependent processes in controlling radionuclide mobility and exposure risk remains insufficiently understood. This study presents an integrated physicochemical and radiological investigation of slurry samples collected from the Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan. Particle-size analysis demonstrates

Coupled salinity-redox gradients shape dissolved organic matter characteristics and its linkages with microbial functional potential in intertidal sediments.

Estuarine intertidal sediments occur in freshwater-seawater mixing zones where hydrological processes simultaneously alter salinity and redox conditions, potentially regulating dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation and microbial processes. However, how DOM and its interactions with microbial communities respond to salinity and redox gradients in natural intertidal environments remains poorly understood. Here, surface sediments and porewater from the Yellow River Estuary were analyzed by integrating constructed composite salinity and redox indicators, spectroscopy-based two-dimensional

A harmonized global prediction of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon in freshwater systems using optical indices and machine learning.

Biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) is the most reactive fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and a major driver of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from inland waters, yet its large-scale assessment is constrained by incubation-based measurements. This study conducted a global meta-analysis integrating harmonized BDOC observations, optical DOM indices, and machine-learning (ML) modeling to enable scalable BDOC prediction across freshwater systems. A total of 1063 paired observations were compiled from 17 studies across eight countries, with cross-study comparability improved thr
