Immunoglobulin G autoantibodies against tissue-transglutaminase. A sensitive, cost-effective assay for the screening of celiac disease.

The characterization of target antigens in several autoimmune disorders has made it possible to develop antigen-specific immunoassays that a … tect the presence of IgA class antibodies, but these immunoglobulins are absent among patients with IgA deficiency, a frequent condition in which CD is very prevalent. In this report, we have analyzed 64 patients at diagnosis of CD for the presence of antibodies against tTGase of both IgA (TGA) and IgG (TGG) classes, using anti-IgA antibodies or Protein A, respe …

Immature B cells in fetal development and immunodeficiency: studies of IgM, IgG, IgA and IgD production in vitro using Epstein-Barr virus activation.

Epstein-Barr virus has been used as a B cell mitogen to explore the parallels between the B cells found in patients with hypogammaglobulinem … linemia known independently to have abnormal circulating suppressor cells. Eight cases of selective IgA deficiency showed reduced IgA production; six of these showed a normal ratio of IgM to IgG production. Thus, the B lymphocytes which circulate in many patients with hypogammaglobulinemia are functionally immature.

Distribution of plasma cells and other cells containing immunoglobulin in the respiratory tract of normal man and class of immunoglobulin contained therein.

The anatomical distribution of plasma cells and other cells containing immunoglobulin in the respiratory tract, and the relative proportions of the immunoglobulin classes have been estimated on necropsy tissues from nine adult human subjects without respiratory disease, five non-smokers and four smokers, none of whom had cough or sputum. Cell counts on multiple sections stained by immunofluorescent methods for the presence of immunoglobulin were carried out on the upper trachea, main bronchus, and lower lobe bronchus. Cells containing immunoglobulin were found mostly in the submucous glands bu

Adverse effects of intravenous immunoglobulin.

The range of diseases in which intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is effective has expanded significantly since its initial use in primary antibody deficiency. There are at present at least 17 preparations of IVIG in use worldwide with similar profiles of adverse effects. Infusion-related effects range in severity. Mild adverse reactions (headache, flushing, low backache, nausea, wheezing) are often associated with a fast infusion rate, and respond rapidly on slowing the infusion. Very rare episodes of life-threatening anaphylaxis may occur, particularly in those IgA-deficient patients with ant

Simultaneous Appearance of Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy and Tubulointerstitial Nephritis and Uveitis Syndrome: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy usually occurs after upper respiratory tract infection. The currently widely accepted pathomechanism involves genetic predisposition, formation of galactose-deficient IgA1, and production of autoantibodies against these IgA, ultimately leading to mesangial deposition of immune complexes. Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome is a rare disease with a suspected autoimmune mechanism, although the exact etiology and pathomechanism are not fully understood. To our knowledge, only a few cases with simultaneous occurrence of these tw

Primary Antibody Deficiency in Patients With Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Call for Immunologic Evaluation Prior to Biologic Therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is prevalent and causes a great negative impact on quality of life. Primary antibody deficiency (PAD … tients met the clinical criteria for PAD; one had Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), one had IgA deficiency, and two had IgG subclass deficiency. No clinical characteristic was predictive of PAD, and severity of CRS was not indicative of hypogammaglobulinemia or insufficient vaccine response. [Cancer and primary humoral immunodeficiency].

The occurrence of cancers in patients with primary humoral immunodeficiency syndrome (X-linked agammaglobulinemia, common variable immunodeficiency, IgA deficiency) is more than mere coincidence. An increased risk of non Hodgkin's lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma, particularly for patients with common variable immunodeficiency, is well established. A literature review is presented on this subject with analysis of case reports, prospective and retrospective studies, and data from the Minnesota Immunodeficiency Cancer Registry.

Centromeric instability of chromosomes 1, 9 and 16 with variable immune deficiency. Support of a new syndrome.

A four-month-old girl with facial dysmorphism, moderate mental retardation, immune deficiency (decreased IgG and IgA and absence of IgM), centromeric instability of chromosomes 1, 9, 16 and very rarely of chromosome 2, and disposition to formation of multibranched chromosomal figures, is described. The case is the fifth described with such chromosomal and immune abnormalities, which prove the existence of a new syndrome. The authors suggest an autosomal recessive inheritance.

Effects of maternal vitamin B12 deficiency from end of gestation to weaning on the growth and haematological and immunological parameters in mouse dams and offspring.

Vitamin B12-deficiency may induce specific symptoms as neurological alterations and unspecific symptoms such as anaemia and growth retardation. In this study, maternal vitamin B12 deficiency from end of gestation to weaning was evaluated in mouse dams, which was provoked by feeding a vitamin B12-deficient diet. The animals were divided into two groups (control and deficient). The control group received the vitamin B12-deficient diet supplemented with commercial vitamin B12. Compared to the control, the vitamin B12-deficient dams and their offspring showed a significant decrease of body weight

Antigliadin and antiendomysium antibody determination for coeliac disease.

The value of IgG and IgA gliadin antibodies (AGA) was compared with that of IgA endomysium antibodies (EMA) for the diagnosis of coeliac disease. Three hundred and six of 340 (90%) children with untreated coeliac disease (flat mucosa) had EMA and 338/340 (99.4%) had IgG AGA and/or IgA AGA. Only 1/340 (a 7 year old boy with selective IgA deficiency) had neither AGA nor EMA. Absence of EMA is more frequent in coeliac patients younger than 2 years than in older patients (32/277 compared with 1/62). EMA were present in 4/211 (2%) of comparison subjects (normal mucosa), IgA AGA in 12/211 (6%), and …

Screening for coeliac disease in families of adults with Type 1 diabetes based on serological markers.

The prevalence of coeliac disease (CD) in the adult population is unknown because silent and latent stages do exist. Type 1 diabetes mellitus may be associated with CD because of common genetic background and/or shared pathogenetic mechanisms. We investigated 74 adults with type 1 diabetes (32+/-11 yr, disease duration 13+/-9 yr), 69 parents of diabetic probands (56+/-10 yr), 59 siblings (30+/-11 yr) and 50 healthy controls (35+/-10 yr) for the presence of circulating islet cell antibodies (ICA), anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA65), anti-gliadin immunoglobulins A and G (IgA- a

[Ataxia telangiectasia syndrome: clinical picture and immunological abnormalities].

Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) is the primary immunodeficiency with chromosomal instability. AT is a multisystem, autosomal recessive disorder characterised by progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, and increased susceptibility to recurrent respiratory tract infections and cancer predisposition. The cells from AT patients are radiosensitive to ionizing radiation and DNA repair damage. The gene responsible for AT is localised at chromosome 11q23.1, and encodes protein ATM that is important in the cell cycle control. In AT, both the humoral and cellular immune systems are affe

Clinical and immunological features of four patients with activation-induced cytidine deaminase deficiency: Renal amyloidosis and other presentations.

INTRODUCTION: Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive inborn error of immunity (IEI) characterized by increased susceptibility to infections, autoimmunity, and/or autoinflammation. AID plays an important role in immunoglobulin class switching and somatic hypermutation. AID deficiency patients have very low or absent levels of IgG, IgA, and IgE, while IgM level is elevated. The disease is designated as type 2 hyperimmunoglobulin M syndrome (HIGM-2). To date, around 130 patients with HIGM-2 have been reported, none from Egypt. METHODS: Four patients
