Automatic segmentation of different-sized white matter lesions by voxel probability estimation.

A new method for fully automated segmentation of white matter lesions (WMLs) on cranial MR imaging is presented. The algorithm uses five types of regular MRI-scans. It is based on a K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classification technique, which builds a feature space from voxel intensity features and spatial information. The technique generates images representing the probability per voxel being part of a WML. By application of thresholds on these probability maps binary segmentations can be produced. ROC-curves show that the segmentations achieve a high sensitivity and specificity. Three similarity

Computer aided quantification of pathological features for flexor tendon pulleys on microscopic images.

Quantifying the pathological features of flexor tendon pulleys is essential for grading the trigger finger since it provides clinicians with objective evidence derived from microscopic images. Although manual grading is time consuming and dependent on the observer experience, there is a lack of image processing methods for automatically extracting pulley pathological features. In this paper, we design and develop a color-based image segmentation system to extract the color and shape features from pulley microscopic images. Two parameters which are the size ratio of abnormal tissue regions and

Selection of an optimal neural network architecture for computer-aided detection of microcalcifications--comparison of automated optimization techniques.

Many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems use neural networks (NNs) for either detection or classification of abnormalities. Currently, most NNs are "optimized" by manual search in a very limited parameter space. In this work, we evaluated the use of automated optimization methods for selecting an optimal convolution neural network (CNN) architecture. Three automated methods, the steepest descent (SD), the simulated annealing (SA), and the genetic algorithm (GA), were compared. We used as an example the CNN that classifies true and false microcalcifications detected on digitized mammograms b

Automated system of analysis to quantify pediatric hip morphology.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a developmental deformity with an incidence of 0.1-3.4%, lacks an objective and reliable definition and assessment metric by which to conduct timely diagnosis. This work aims to address this challenge by developing a system of analysis to accurately detect 22 key anatomical landmarks in anteroposterior pelvic radiographs of the juvenile hip, from which a range of novel salient morphological measures can be derived. A coarse-to-fine approach was implemented, with six model variations of the U-Net deep neural network architecture compared for the coarse

Effective deep learning approaches for predicting COVID-19 outcomes from chest computed tomography volumes.

The rapid evolution of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in an urgent need for effective clinical tools to reduce transmission and manage severe illness. Numerous teams are quickly developing artificial intelligence approaches to these problems, including using deep learning to predict COVID-19 diagnosis and prognosis from chest computed tomography (CT) imaging data. In this work, we assess the value of aggregated chest CT data for COVID-19 prognosis compared to clinical metadata alone. We develop a novel patient-level algorithm to aggregate the chest CT volume int

A 3-dimensional method for analyzing the morphology of patients with maxillofacial deformities.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, cephalograms have been used to evaluate a patient's maxillofacial skeleton and facial soft-tissue morphology. However, magnification and distortion of the cephalograms make detailed morphologic analysis difficult in patients with complex deformities. The purpose of this article was to introduce a new method for visualizing deformation and deviation of the maxillofacial skeleton and facial soft tissues. METHODS: Standard 3-dimensional Japanese head models were sized to match the sella-to-nasion distance obtained from 2 patients' (1 man, 1 woman) maxillofacial skele

Computerized assessment of the mastoid air cell system.

There have been many arguments on the development of pneumatization of temporal bone. However, a technique for direct volume measurement from high resolution computed tomography has never been reported. The aim of this paper is to develop a technique by using digital image processing to measure the volume of the mastoid air cell system. Forty three ears of 26 healthy subjects (13 males and 13 females) without a history of chronic or exudative otitis media, clear signs of Meniere's disease, severe sensorineural hearing impairment or malformation of temporal bone were eligible for enrolment in t

[Computerized tomography imaging of the lumbar spine in arthroosteitis pustulosa (case report)].

Computed tomography of lumbar spine in a case of pustulotic arthroosteitis demonstrates unusual proliferative changes of syndesmophytes and of the vertebral body. The osseous structures look "frayed out" and resemble the changes of sternoclavicular hyperostosis in early stages. A three dimensional picture shows that these proliferative changes apparently consist of irregular strips of bone. In addition, the vertebral body is surrounded by a soft tissue structure which probably indicates a perivertebral inflammatory process. Radiological changes of the lumbar spine in pustulotic arthroosteitis

Mesh-based approach for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures of interest in radiotherapy.

In this paper a method based on mesh surfaces approximations for the 3D analysis of anatomical structures in Radiotherapy (RT) is presented. Parotid glands meshes constructed from Megavoltage CT (MVCT) images were studied in terms of volume, distance between center of mass (distCOM) of the right and left parotids, dice similarity coefficient (DICE), maximum distance between meshes (DMax) and the average symmetric distance (ASD). A comparison with the standard binary images approach was performed. While absence of significant differences in terms of volume, DistCOM and DICE indices suggests tha

Increasing efficiency in the ACR Digital Mammography QC Manual's DBT Z-resolution evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The Z-resolution evaluation in the ACR Digital Mammography (DM) QC manual measures a pseudo full width half max (pFWHM) from speck group signals through slices of the phantom for comparison to a baseline value. PURPOSE: The evaluation requires measurement of seven ROIs on up to nine slices, for a potential of up to 63 ROIs. This work evaluates whether measuring fewer ROIs would produce similar results. METHODS: Z-resolution data from 468 surveys from 147 mammography units were retrospectively analyzed. The pFWHM was calculated using the 6-speck mean (pFWHM6) as described in the A

Spinal disease image segmentation technology integrating U-ResNet and shape-aware attention.

The incidence of spinal diseases is rising and affecting younger people, making early and accurate diagnosis based on medical imaging crucial for treatment. However, traditional manual segmentation and measurement suffer from issues such as judgment discrepancies, time-consuming processes, and subjective errors. Existing deep learning segmentation methods still face challenges such as insufficient adaptability to complex pathological interference, high deployment barriers, and weak integration with clinical needs. This study designs an end-to-end deep learning model, with three core optimizati

Reproducibility of intravoxel incoherent motion quantification in the liver across field strengths and gradient hardware.

PURPOSE: To evaluate reproducibility and interlobar agreement of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) quantification in the liver across field strengths and MR scanners with different gradient hardware. METHODS: Cramer-Rao lower bound optimization was performed to determine optimized monopolar and motion-robust 2D (b-value and first-order motion moment [M1]) IVIM-DWI acquisitions. Eleven healthy volunteers underwent diffusion MRI of the liver, where each optimized acquisition was obtained five times across three MRI scanners. For each data set, IVIM estimates (diffusion coefficient (D), pseudo

Automated diffusion-based parcellation of the hypothalamus reveals subunit-specific associations with obesity.

The hypothalamus is a small, yet highly versatile structure mainly involved in bodily functions such as control of food intake and endocrine activity. Functional anatomy of different hypothalamic areas is mainly investigated using structural MRI, validated by ex-vivo histological studies. Based on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), recent automated clustering methods provide robust tools for parcellation. Using data of 100 healthy adults provided by the Human Connectome Project Database, we applied DWI-based automated clustering to the hypothalamus and related microstructural properties in thes

[Functional MR imaging of the liver].

The diagnostics of diffuse liver disease traditionally rely on liver biopsies and histopathological analysis of tissue specimens. However, a liver biopsy is invasive and carries some non-negligible risks, especially for patients with decreased liver function and those requiring repeated follow-up examinations. Over the last decades, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has developed into a valuable tool for the non-invasive characterization of focal liver lesions and diseases of the bile ducts. Recently, several MRI methods have been developed and clinically evaluated that also allow the diagnosti

Automatic location of vertebrae on DXA images using random forest regression.

We provide a fully automatic method of segmenting vertebrae in DXA images. This is of clinical relevance to the diagnosis of osteoporosis by vertebral fracture, and to grading fractures in clinical trials. In order to locate the vertebrae we train detectors for the upper and lower vertebral endplates. Each detector uses random forest regressor voting applied to Haar-like input features. The regressors are applied at a grid of points across the image, and each tree votes for an endplate centre position. Modes in the smoothed vote image are endplate candidates, some of which are the neighbouring

fMRI bold signal analysis using a novel nonparametric statistical method.

We present in this article a novel analytical method that enables the application of nonparametric rank-order statistics to fMRI data analysis, since it takes the omnipresent serial correlations (temporal autocorrelations) properly into account. Comparative simulations, using the common General Linear Model and the permutation test, confirm the validity and usefulness of our approach. Our simulations, which are performed with both synthetic and real fMRI data, show that our method requires significantly less computation time than permutation-based methods, while offering the same order of robu

[Self-supervised classification method for breast pathology images fusing geometric priors and multi-scale attention].

Breast whole slide image (WSI) serves as an essential basis for breast cancer diagnosis and subtype classification. However, its high resolution, multi-scale structural characteristics, and arbitrary orientation pose substantial challenges for automated analysis. Existing deep learning methods typically rely on large amounts of annotated data and struggle to handle the rotational variability and scale differences inherent in pathological images, which limits their generalization ability in cross-center settings. To address these issues, this study proposes a self-supervised learning model, IAM
