OBJECTIVE: Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) that enables people with severe motor disabilities to use their brain signals for direct control of objects have attracted increased interest in rehabilitation. To date, no study has investigated feasibility of the BCI framework incorporating both intracortical and scalp signals.
METHODS: Concurrent local field potential (LFP) from the hand-knob area and scalp EEG were recorded in a paraplegic patient undergoing a spike-based close-loop neurorehabilitation training. Based upon multimodal spatio-spectral feature extraction and Naïve Bayes classificati

The human brain functional lateralization has been widely studied over the past decades, and neuroimaging studies have shown how activation of motor areas during hand movement execution (ME) is different according to hand dominance. Nevertheless, there is no research directly investigating the effects of the participant's handedness in a motor imagery (MI) and ME task in both right and left-handed individuals at the cortical and subcortical level. Twenty-six right-handed and 25 left-handed participants were studied using functional magnetic resonance imaging during the imagination and executio…

BACKGROUND: Involuntary mental imagery is elevated among people with bipolar disorder, and has been shown to shape biases in interpretation of ambiguous information. However, it is not clear whether biases in interpretation of ambiguous scenarios can be observed in those at risk for bipolar disorder, or whether involuntary imagery is related to such a bias.
AIMS: In the present study, we extended a prominent model of bipolar cognition to an at-risk sample. We specifically tested whether positive interpretation bias and involuntary mental imagery are linked to a greater risk of bipolar disorde

Transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) is a technique for modulating brain excitability that has potential to be used in motor neurorehabilitation by enhancing motor activity, such as motor imagery (MI). tDCS effects depend on different factors, like current density and the position of the stimulating electrodes. This study presents preliminary results of the evaluation of the effect of current density on MI performance by measuring right-hand/feet MI accuracy of classification from electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements after anodal tDCS is applied with a 4×1 ring montage over the right-h

BACKGROUND: Activity limitations of the upper extremity are a common finding for individuals living with stroke. Mental practice (MP) is a training method that uses cognitive rehearsal of activities to improve performance of those activities.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if MP improves the outcome of upper extremity rehabilitation for individuals living with the effects of stroke.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Stroke Group Trials Register (November 2010), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, November 2009), PubMed (1965 to November 2009)

The comparison of EEG spatial organization between groups of 23 students of graphic arts department ("professional" subjects) and 39 subjects of another specialization ("non-professional" subjects) was made in order to find EEG correlates of visual imagery experience. Changes in the spatial organization of biopotentials (spatial synchronization and spatial disorder, spectral power and coherence) were analyzed while subjects mentally composed visual images from two simple elements, right angle and oblique line. The total number of elements presented for the image composition increased with each

Hypnotherapy may sometimes be helpful in ameliorating the behavioral characteristics of Tourette's Syndrome. This paper presents a case study of an adolescent male with Tourette's Syndrome who was referred by his physician for hypnotherapy for his disorder. A four-step treatment model involved progressive relaxation, finger-tip temperature feedback using a biotic finger band, Spiegel's eye-roll procedure, and imagery. The adolescent was in treatment for nine sessions, from October 1985 to March 1986, a period of 6 months. At the end of the nine sessions, his tics and vocalizations were minimal

The relationships of nightmare frequency to hypnotic ability, vividness of visual imagery, and the tendency to become absorbed in fantasy-like experiences were examined. Subjects were 841 undergraduate university students who participated in group tests of hypnotic ability, after which they estimated the number of nightmares that they had experienced in the prior year. In addition, 406 of the subjects completed Marks' Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire, and Rotenberg and Bowers' Absorption scale. Of the subjects, 76% reported experiencing at least one nightmare in the prior year; 8.3% i

The Ekbom syndrome, also known as delusion of parasitosis or acarophobia is an obsessive phobic state in which the patient thinks, imagines or believes that his or her skin is infested by parasites. In the hallucinatory state, he/she removes parts of the skin, identifying them as parasites. It can be primary or secondary to other organic or psychiatric diseases. Generally speaking these patients take a long time to seek for medical support and the dermatologist is almost always the first physician to see them. Here we describe three patients with delusional parasitosis associated with organic

Two subjects currently undergoing covert sensitization treatment were asked to imagine alternately the covert scene and a pleasant imagery scene while EMGs from the corrugator and forearm extensor muscle sites were continuously monitored. Visual inspection of the data suggests that corrugator EMG can reliably discriminate the covert-sensitization scene from the pleasant imagery and from resting baseline conditions. Facial EMG may have potential for objectively studying imagery and its role in covert sensitization and other imagery-based treatments.

Foreign body granuloma is an inflammatory tissue reaction around retained foreign bodies after penetrating trauma. The granulomatous reaction is a natural mechanism of the body to heal wounds by restricting the damage done by a pathological agent and containing the pathological agent to the wound site only. Here we present a classic case of a foreign body granuloma on the dorsal aspect of the forearm. This case was evaluated radiologically on high-frequency ultrasound and X-ray imagining and was operated on afterward. A piece of broken glass bangle was found inside the granuloma.

I trace the development of the concept of sylvatic plague - the first sylvatic disease - examining its invention by Ricardo Jorge to describe a global phenomenon of plague reservoirs among wild rodents, and its circulation. The concept implied a space where plague was enzootic, and relied on a division between inhabited and uninhabited spaces and between domestic rats and wild rodents. Some of the characteristics of this space varied, but it always referred to places imagined as empty of humans and rats. In 1927, it designated ambiguously deserts, in 1935, uninhabited regions in general, and i

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is the signature federal legislative accomplishment of the anti-violence movement and has ensured that criminalization is the primary response to intimate partner violence in the United States. But at the time of its passage, some anti-violence activists, particularly women of color, warned that criminalization would be problematic for a number of reasons, a caution that has borne fruit in the 25 years since VAWA's passage. This article critiques the effectiveness of criminalization as anti-domestic violence policy and imagines what a non-carceral VAWA cou

The main aim of this paper is to present 3 cases of persistent (patent) primitive trigeminal artery incidentally revealed during various radiological examinations. The presence and function of these vessels in extrauterine life is sometimes associated with other vascular abnormalities, e.g. aneurysms, haemangiomas, moyamoya disease, but frequently found incidentally without any negative signs or symptoms. The presented cases of patients with primitive trigeminal artery clearly show that the reported ailments, which had made the diagnostic imagining necessary, were not associated with the paten

We present a case in which a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) developed a sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus due to inner-ear syphilis affection. The patient had normal otomicroscopy, tympanometry, ear, nose & throat examination, caloric test and intracranial magnetic resonance imagining. Relevant serological blood samples and lumbal puncture indicated syphilis in its secondary stage or the early latent phase. Audiometry demonstrated a considerable improvement and tinnitus decreased after ten days of treatment with antibiotics and prednisone.
