Persistence of gut dysbiosis in individuals with anorexia nervosa.

Recent evidence suggests a crucial role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of anorexia nervosa (AN). In this study, we carried out a series of multiple analyses of the gut microbiota of hospitalized individuals with AN over three months using 16S or 23S rRNA-targeted reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology (YIF-SCAN®), which is highly sensitive and enables the precise quantification of viable microorganisms. Despite the weight gain and improvements in psychological features observed during treatment, individuals with AN exhibited persistent gut micr

Metabolomic analysis of seminal fluids in infertile individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Infertility impacts a substantial number of couples worldwide, and about 50% of cases are linked to male factors. The analysis of seminal fluid composition can improve diagnostic accuracy and offer deeper insights into the pathophysiology of male factor infertility. This study seeks to identify novel markers for diagnosing and treating male infertility by comparing organic acid profiles in the seminal fluid of individuals with normospermia, oligospermia, and azoospermia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Semen samples were collected from men with normospermia, oligospermia, and azoospermia. Th

Exercise Pathophysiology and Testing in Individuals With a Fontan Circulation.

The Fontan circulation, a surgical palliation for single-ventricle congenital heart disease, profoundly impacts the cardiopulmonary response to exercise. Reliant on passive pulmonary blood flow, the Fontan circulation has limited capacity to augment cardiac output as necessary to supply working muscles during exercise. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) objectively assesses cardiorespiratory fitness and provides insight into the etiology of exercise intolerance. Furthermore, CPET variables, such as peak oxygen consumption and submaximal variables, have prognostic value and may be used as

[Nutritional support for individuals with advanced oncological pathology].

Cachexia increases the risk of therapeutic failure and reduces the quality of life for cancer patients. Patients with nutritional risks should be referred to a dietitian. Nutritional interventions primarily include meal adaptation and oral nutritional supplements. When cachexia is more severe, artificial nutrition is indicated for patients with a KPS (Karnofsky Performance Status) of 40 or above and a life expectancy of more than 6 weeks. When the digestive system is functional, enteral nutrition is recommended. Parenteral nutrition shows the same benefits but requires close monitoring. The de

Effect of Virtual Reality on Sleep-Deprived Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Sleep deprivation (SD) refers to getting less than the required amount of sleep, which for adults ranges from 7 to 9 h of sleep per night and can be caused by social and biological factors. College students experience SD, which can affect their academic performance, health, and mood. Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT), an upcoming method of intervention, has been used in other psychological conditions with positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of VRT on individuals with SD. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study recruited 28 individuals based on the s

A framework for individualized splice-switching oligonucleotide therapy.

Splice-switching antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) could be used to treat a subset of individuals with genetic diseases1, but the systematic identification of such individuals remains a challenge. Here we performed whole-genome sequencing analyses to characterize genetic variation in 235 individuals (from 209 families) with ataxia-telangiectasia, a severely debilitating and life-threatening recessive genetic disorder2,3, yielding a complete molecular diagnosis in almost all individuals. We developed a predictive taxonomy to assess the amenability of each individual to splice-switching ASO inte

An individual's skin stiffness predicts their tactile acuity.

Individual differences in tactile acuity have been correlated with age, gender, and finger size, while the role of the skin's stiffness has been underexplored. Using an approach to image the 3-D deformation of the skin surface while in contact with transparent elastic objects, we evaluate a cohort of 40 young participants, who present a diverse range of finger size, skin stiffness, and fingerprint ridge breadth. The results indicate that skin stiffness generally correlates with finger size, although individuals with relatively softer skin can better discriminate compliant objects. Analysis of

Functional individual variability development of the neonatal brain.

Individual variability in cognition and behavior results from the differences in brain structure and function that have already emerged before birth. However, little is known about individual variability in brain functional architecture at local level in neonates which is of great significance to explore owing to largely undeveloped long-range functional connectivity and segregated functions in early brain development. To address this, resting-state fMRI data of 163 neonates ranged from 32 to 45 postconceptional weeks (PCW) were used in this study, and various functional features including fun

Intestinal Norovirus Binding Patterns in Nonsecretor Individuals.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) infection is associated with an active FUT2 gene, which characterizes the secretor phenotype. However, nonsecretor individuals are also affected by HuNoV infection although in a lesser proportion. Here, we studied GII.3, GII.4, and GII.17 HuNoV interactions in nonsecretor individuals using virus-like particles (VLPs). Only GII.4 HuNoV specifically interacted with nonsecretor saliva. Competition experiments using histo-blood group antigen (HBGA)-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) demonstrate that GII.4 VLPs recognized the Lewis a (Lea) antigen. We also analyzed HuNoV

Exploring intersectionality: an international yet individual issue.

This article explores both reported and personal experiences of intersectionality within the healthcare system, which is often due to systemic inequalities as well as deep ingrained perceptions and opinions. With my perspective as both a medical student and rare disease patient battling generalised Myasthenia Gravis, I uncover and expose the aspects of intersectionality which are often brushed under the carpet. Moreover, I identify potential routes which we may collectively, as both clinicians and patients, embark upon to navigate our way out of this systemic snare. For those reading and engag

Impact of Individual Comorbidities on Survival of Patients with Myelofibrosis.

The comorbidity burden is an important risk factor for overall survival (OS) in several hematological malignancies. This observational prospective study was conducted to evaluate the impact of individual comorbidities on survival in a multicenter series of 668 patients with primary myelofibrosis (PMF) or MF secondary to polycythemia vera (PPV-MF) or essential thrombocythemia (PET-MF). Hypertension (hazard ratio (HR) = 4.96, p < 0.001), smoking (HR = 5.08, p < 0.001), dyslipidemia (HR = 4.65, p < 0.001) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) (HR = 4.26, p = 0.015) were most adversely associated with OS. Language Impairments in Individuals With Coffin-Siris Syndrome.

Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS, MIM 135900) is a now well-described, multiple congenital anomaly/intellectual disability syndrome classically characterized by fifth digit/nail hypoplasia, coarse facial features, and a range of organ-system related anomalies. Since its initial description in 1970, and the discovery of associated genes in 2011, CSS now encompasses a wide range of phenotypes and abilities caused by pathogenic variants in the BAF complex (often referred to as "BAFopathy"). It appears that the BAF complex leads to speech and language impairments in this population, and subsequently we
