Impact of written and photographic instruction sheets on patient behavior after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the extent to which patients unnecessarily restrict activities of daily living after routine cataract surgery and to test interventions to increase activity. SETTING: Day treatment center, London, United Kingdom. METHODS: In this nonrandomized interventional clinical study, consecutive patients having routine first-eye sutureless small-incision cataract surgery received 1 of 3 of the following postoperative instructions: standard discharge instructions informing patients that they could continue all activities of daily living (standard group), an additional written sheet

Beyond knowledge deficits: social visibility, family dynamics, and delayed initiation among people living with HIV in Southwestern China-a descriptive phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Despite global recommendations for early antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and the well-established benefits of timely treatment, delayed ART initiation remains a concern in some settings. Previous studies have identified multiple barriers to ART initiation, including limited treatment knowledge, stigma, disclosure concerns, side-effect fears, and service-related barriers. Less is known, however, about how these factors become organized in everyday life into a sustained process of delay after diagnosis. This study explored how people living with HIV in southwestern China expe

Anatomical features of the mandibular canal and their clinical significance - review of literature.

The clinical issues related to the anatomical variation of the mandibular canal have been extensively analyzed since the 19th century. Evolving dentistry techniques and advancements in the prosthetics forced to collect detailed information about anatomical variations of the mandibular canal due to its neurovascular content. Therefore, its radiographic imaging became an essential part of the oral surgery, in order to avoid complications resulted from an accidental damage of the mandibular canal.

[Diagnosis of popliteal cysts and their complications].

Popliteal cysts and their complications (rupture, expansion and pseudothrombosis) all of which may simulate deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremity may be diagnosed reliably by ultrasonography. Even small cysts can be detected, their extension can be defined and rupture with leakage of fluid into the surrounding muscles can be diagnosed. Phlebography can be avoided in most cases. Arthrography rarely gives additional information. Ultrasonography of the erect patient is recommended if rupture is suspected.

Development of an automatic medical summary report system.

We developed a medical summary report system. In this system, each department can specify the predetermined conditions for issuing the summary report. The summary is made through a hierarchical database in the integrated hospital information system according to the predetermined conditions. The summary automatically issued after reception of the outpatient, or also issued by on-line summary report program with the patient number if requested by doctors. The report is sent to the proper consulting room from the reception desk using an air-shooter. The report contains the patient information suc

Information about contact force and surface texture is mixed in the firing rates of cutaneous afferent neurons.

Cutaneous mechanoreceptors in our hands gather information about the objects we handle. Tactile fibers encode mixed information about contact events and object properties. Neural coding in tactile afferents is typically studied by varying a single aspect of tactile stimuli, avoiding the confounds of real-world haptic interactions. We instead record responses of small populations of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons to variable tactile stimuli and find that neurons primarily respond to force, though some texture information can be detected. Tactile nerve fibers convey information about many fea

Is deafness mutation screening required in cystic fibrosis patients?

Aminoglycosides are widely used in cystic fibrosis management. The m.1555A>G mutation predisposes to aminoglycoside ototoxicity. It may cause later onset hearing loss in the absence of aminoglycosides use and gradual hearing loss may be an inevitable consequence of the mutation. Given that aminoglycoside therapy forms the backbone of IV protocols in CF, this article recommends screening for this mutation to allow informed decision-making prior to aminoglycoside administration, to avoid preventable deafness.

Osteomesopyknosis--a benign axial hyperostosis that can mimic metastatic disease.

We report two cases of an axial osteosclerosis with histopathologic findings of osteomesopyknosis in siblings. Osteomesopyknosis is a benign hereditary osteosclerosis that can show a radiologic pattern similar to blastic metastatic disease. The aim of this article is to inform radiologists about the existence of this benign condition and its various radiologic manifestations. Therefore, we discuss the principal differential diagnosis and point out the key imaging findings of osteomesopyknosis in order to avoid overdiagnosis in future cases.

Classification algorithms applied to narrative reports.

Narrative text reports represent a significant source of clinical data. However, the information stored in these reports is inaccessible to many automated decision support systems. Data mining techniques can assist in extracting information from narrative data. Multiple classification methods, such as rule generation, decision trees, Bayesian classifiers, and information retrieval were used to classify a set of 200 chest X-ray reports according to 6 clinical conditions indicated. A general-purpose natural language processor was used to convert the narrative text into a coded form that could be

An information theoretic approach to detecting spatially varying genes.

A key step in spatial transcriptomics is identifying genes with spatially varying expression patterns. We adopt an information theoretic perspective to this problem by equating the degree of spatial coherence with the Jensen-Shannon divergence between pairs of nearby cells and pairs of distant cells. To avoid the notoriously difficult problem of estimating information theoretic divergences, we use modern approximation techniques to implement a computationally efficient algorithm designed to scale with in situ spatial transcriptomics technologies. In addition to being highly scalable, we show t

The value of questionnaires aimed at key informants, and distributed through an existing administrative system, for rapid and cost-effective health assessment.

The requirement for a careful interview set-up in the classical key-informant approach considerably limits its extension to a larger scale. However, the administration of simplified questionnaires entirely through an existing administrative system can provide an alternative approach and become a valuable tool for fast and cost-efficient community health assessment. This methodology relies on a well-structured and working administrative system, and is restricted to health problems that are well and distinctly perceived by community members. It gives mainly qualitative results, and can therefore

Gender differences in stigma and care avoidance among people living with MASLD: an international survey.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects women and men differently, and both perceived and self-stigma may contribute to care avoidance. This study aimed to assess gender-specific patterns of stigma and their associations with care avoidance in MASLD. METHODS: A cross-sectional, international survey was administered in 2023 by the Global MASH/NASH Council (GNC) among adults with a confirmed diagnosis of MASLD. The survey collected sociodemographic and clinical data, assessed perceived stigma and self-stigma using the validated Self-Stigma Sca

Hostellers' knowledge of transmission and prevention of avian influenza when travelling abroad.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about hostellers' knowledge of transmission and prevention of avian influenza when travelling abroad. This study was designed to investigate these in the Australian context. METHODS: In 2006, hostellers attending a travellers' information evening in Brisbane, Queensland, were asked to complete self-administered questionnaires. RESULTS: Forty-two questionnaires (60.8%) were returned. Over two-thirds of attendees were females (71.4%, 30). About two-thirds of the hostellers attending the travellers' information evening reported being aged 29 years or younger (64.2%,

Incidence and risk factors of Opisthorchis viverrini infections in a rural community in Thailand.

Opisthorchis viverrini infection is one of the major public health problems in Thailand. Although information about transmission of this parasite to humans is well established, infections are still prevalent in the northern and northeastern Thailand. Thus, prospective epidemiologic information is needed for developing more effective public health interventions. A cohort study to identify incidence and risk factors of O. viverrini infection was conducted in a rural community in Thailand during December 2002-February 2004. The incidence rate of opisthorchiasis was 21.6/100 person-years. The inde

[Function of evidence-based medicine in general practice. Case report: streptococcal pharyngitis].

A Bavarian country doctor taking part in a course on evidence-based medicine, put the question whether there was any evidence that, in children with confirmed streptococcal infection of the respiratory tract, appropriate antibiotic treatment could reduce the risk of late complications. With the help of the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI), we undertook a search of the literature, which, however, failed to turn up any information in support of a prophylactic effect of antibiotic treatment in such a case. To avoid jumping to hasty conclusions, however, the conse

Editing of 3D images in echocardiographic evaluation of mitral valve: Is there any correlation with photography?

Editing of 3D raw images acquired during transesophageal echocardiography could be similar to the post processing of raw images with digital software used in photography. 3D image editing in echocardiography is often underestimated in clinical practice, and people are satisfied with the first 3D image they are able to obtain during transesophageal examination. In fact, it is often believed to represent solely an aesthetic addition that does not change the information already obtained with 2D and baseline 3D. In reality, it represents a crucial moment to better understand the mechanisms of mitr

Pitfalls of barcodes in the study of worldwide SARS-CoV-2 variation and phylodynamics.

Analysis of SARS-CoV-2 genome variation using a minimal number of selected informative sites conforming a genetic barcode presents several drawbacks. We show that purely mathematical procedures for site selection should be supervised by known phylogeny (i) to ensure that solid tree branches are represented instead of mutational hotspots with poor phylogeographic proprieties, and (ii) to avoid phylogenetic redundancy. We propose a procedure that prevents information redundancy in site selection by considering the cumulative informativeness of previously selected sites (as a proxy for phylogenet

Discriminant analysis in treatment evaluation of ectopic eruption of the maxillary first permanent molars.

The value of an analytical routine which could be used in the evaluation of clinical studies was assessed. Stepwise discriminant analysis with stepwise selection/elimination was used to reduce the amount of data without losing information before further analyses with canonical discriminant analysis. The purpose of canonical discriminant analysis was to reveal interactions between factors associated with the ectopic eruption of the first permanent molars. Two canonical discriminant functions were used to determine the accuracy of diagnosis and the effect of treatment. This information consisted
