Patient-provider communication with HIV-positive women about abnormal Pap test results.

In this article, the authors examine communication between women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WLH) and health care providers (HCPs) regarding abnormal Pap tests. During the period of March 2011 through April 2012, 145 WLH were recruited from Ryan White funded clinics and community-based AIDS service organizations located in the southeastern United States. WLH who had an abnormal Pap test (69%, n = 100/145) were asked if their HCP shared and explained information about abnormal Pap tests. The authors performed chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression analyses using St

Parents' information needs in tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor treatment decisions.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe parents' experiences and the information used when making decisions about tumor necrosis factor-α inhibitor (TNFαi) treatment. METHODS: We interviewed parents of children with Crohn disease (CD) or juvenile idiopathic arthritis who had experience deciding about TNFαi treatment. Interview questions focused on information used to make decisions and factors that influenced decision making. We used thematic analysis for all coding and analysis. Coding structure was developed by a multidisciplinary team review of the initial interviews. Two coders th

The impact of opioid use disorder on levels of educational attainment: Perceived benefits and consequences.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Adolescents and young adults have the highest rates of opioid use, and despite shared risk-factors such as mental health and social pressures, there is little information on the relationship between education and opioid use disorder. In this study, we sought to assess differences in educational attainment between opioid users and the general population, and the impact of opioid use on one's education. METHODS: Patients (N = 14,349) entering opioid treatment programs across the United States were surveyed on educational attainment from 2010 to 2018. Data were compared to estim

Stage-Based Model of User Engagement Patterns in an Online Health Community for Cardiovascular Disease Management: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Online health communities (OHCs) provide vital peer support and health information to individuals managing chronic conditions. However, sustained user engagement remains challenging, with many users reducing activity over time despite the ongoing benefits these platforms offer. While some individuals may improve or become more knowledgeable, sustained engagement remains critical because ongoing participation fosters trust, peer support, and continuous access to evolving health information that may persist beyond initial recovery or learning. Hence, it is important to consider how c

Prevalence and predictors of carer burden and depression in carers of patients referred to an old age psychiatric service.

BACKGROUND: Too little is currently known about the prevalence of and risk factors for depression and carer strain among informal carers of community-dwelling elderly mentally ill. This study seeks to assess the prevalence of depression, using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15), the degree of carer burden/strain, and their risk factors among the primary informal carers of patients referred to our community-based old age psychiatry service. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used, with the subjects comprising 100 primary informal carers of patients who live at home and were re

Neurotransmitters and molecular chaperones interactions in cerebral malaria: Is there a missing link?

Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for the most severe and deadliest human malaria infection. The most serious complication of this infection is cerebral malaria. Among the proposed hypotheses that seek to explain the manifestation of the neurological syndrome in cerebral malaria is the vascular occlusion/sequestration/mechanic hypothesis, the cytokine storm or inflammatory theory, or a combination of both. Unfortunately, despite the increasing volume of scientific information on cerebral malaria, our understanding of its pathophysiologic mechanism(s) is still very limited. In a bid to maint

A randomized controlled trial of a computer-based brief intervention for victimized perinatal women seeking mental health treatment.

Intimate partner victimization (IPV) during the perinatal period is associated with adverse outcomes for the woman, her developing fetus, and any children in her care. Maternal mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety, are prevalent during the perinatal period particularly among women experiencing IPV. Screening and interventions for IPV targeting women seeking mental health treatment are lacking. In the current study, we examine the feasibility, acceptability, and the preliminary efficacy of a brief, motivational computer-based intervention, SURE (Strength for U in Relationshi

Treatment-seeking and uptake of malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women and caregivers of children under-five years during COVID-19 pandemic in rural communities in South West Uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to avert the negative effects of malaria, there remain barriers to the uptake of prevention measures, and these have hindered its eradication. This study explored the factors that influence uptake of malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women and children under-five years and the impact of COVID-19 in a malaria endemic rural district in Uganda. METHODS: This was a qualitative case study that used focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and key informant interviews involving pregnant women, caregivers of children under-five years, traditional birth att

Olfactory circuits and behaviors of nematodes.

Over one billion people worldwide are infected with parasitic nematodes. Many parasitic nematodes actively search for hosts to infect using volatile chemical cues, so understanding the olfactory signals that drive host seeking may elucidate new pathways for preventing infections. The free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a powerful model for parasitic nematodes: because sensory neuroanatomy is conserved across nematode species, an understanding of the microcircuits that mediate olfaction in C. elegans may inform studies of olfaction in parasitic nematodes. Here we review circuit mecha

Dengue virus infection modifies mosquito blood-feeding behavior to increase transmission to the host.

Mosquito blood-feeding behavior is a key determinant of the epidemiology of dengue viruses (DENV), the most-prevalent mosquito-borne viruses. However, despite its importance, how DENV infection influences mosquito blood-feeding and, consequently, transmission remains unclear. Here, we developed a high-resolution, video-based assay to observe the blood-feeding behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on mice. We then applied multivariate analysis on the high-throughput, unbiased data generated from the assay to ordinate behavioral parameters into complex behaviors. We showed that DENV infection inc

Bridging the Digital Prevention Gap: A Systematic Literature Review of Digital Health Literacy and Preventive Health Behaviors in Low-Income Communities.

Digital health literacy is increasingly central to preventive healthcare, particularly in low-income and socioeconomically vulnerable communities where limited internet access, lower health literacy, and digital exclusion may restrict engagement with prevention services. Although digital health tools are expanding, evidence remains fragmented on how digital health literacy is associated with preventive behaviors in disadvantaged populations. This systematic literature review examined the association between digital health literacy and preventive health behaviors, including COVID-19 prevention,

The association of impulsivity and metacognitive beliefs in adjustment disorder: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Adjustment Disorder (AD) is a stress-related condition characterized by emotional and behavioral symptoms triggered by various identifiable stressors. Impulsivity, marked by difficulties in decision-making and control, and deficits in metacognition, which regulate cognitive awareness, are common in AD. This study explores potential associations between dimensions of impulsive behavior, as defined by the UPPS (Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking) model, and metacognitive beliefs in individuals with AD. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 75 male individua

Sexual Grooming in the Boy Scouts of America.

Research has shown child sexual abuse (CSA) within youth-serving organizations (YSOs) often went undetected for decades, which may in part be due to the use of sexual grooming behaviors. One such YSO is the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), with nearly 100,000 individuals alleging CSA within this organization. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of CSA within the BSA and the presence of sexual grooming behaviors as described by the Sexual Grooming Model. Files (n = 156) were coded from a public database of volunteers who were expelled from BSA due to suspicions of CSA from the 1960s th

"An effect that is deeper than beating": family violence in Jordanian women.

This study informs health care approaches to gender-based family violence through focus groups with Jordanian women. The authors conducted a thematic qualitative analysis of 12 focus groups among 70 married, divorced, or widowed women about their experiences and beliefs regarding family violence. Five themes relevant to health care providers were identified. Three of the themes addressed participant-perceived causes of gender-based family violence: (1) unmet gender role expectations; (2) stigma and social norms; and (3) extended family roles. The fourth theme reflected effects on victims. The

Multivariate patterns linking brain microstructure to temperament and behavior in adolescent eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are multifaceted psychiatric disorders characterized by varying behaviors, traits, and cognitive profiles driving symptom heterogeneity and severity. Non-invasive neuroimaging studies have been critical to elucidate the neurobiological circuitry involved in ED-related behaviors, but often focused on a limited set of regions of interest and/or symptoms. The current study harnesses multivariate methods to map microstructural and morphometric patterns across the entire brain to multiple domains of behavior and symptomatology in adolescents with EDs.
