Treatment of lymphangiomas by means of sclerotherapy with OK-432 (Picibanil®) is safe and effective - A retrospective case series.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital cystic lymphangiomas (CCL) or lymphatic malformations (LMs) are benign malformations due to a developmental disorder of lymphatic vessels. Besides surgical excision, sclerosant therapy of these lesions by intracavitary injection of OK-432 (Picibanil®), a lyophilized mixture of group A Streptococcus pyogenes, is a common therapeutical option. METHODS: In a single center retrospective study we analyzed 37 consecutive patients (30 children, 3 adolescents and 4 adults) who were diagnosed with lymphangioma and subsequently treated with OK-432 (Picibanil®) in a general hosp

Porcine Wharton's jelly cells distribute throughout the body after intraperitoneal injection.

BACKGROUND: Wharton's jelly cells (WJCs) have multiple differentiation potentials and are easily harvested in large numbers. WJCs are well tolerated in allogeneic environments and there is a growing list of their therapeutic effects. Most therapies require administering large numbers of cells and this is generally accomplished by intravenous injection. Here, we studied the locations of porcine WJCs in immune-competent, allogeneic hosts after intraperitoneal (IP) injection. METHODS: Male porcine WJCs were administered to female neonatal piglets by IP injection. The location of transplanted cel

A hydrogel matrix prolongs persistence and promotes specific localization of an oncolytic adenovirus in a tumor by restricting nonspecific shedding and an antiviral immune response.

Currently, intratumoral injection of an oncolytic adenovirus (Ad) is the conventional administration route in clinical trials. Nonetheless, the locally administered Ad disseminates to the surrounding nontarget tissues and has short biological activity due to immunogenicity of Ad, thus necessitating multiple injections to achieve a sufficient therapeutic index. In the present study, a tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL)-expressing oncolytic Ad (oAd-TRAIL) was encapsulated in a gelatin hydrogel (oAd-TRAIL/gel) to enhance and prolong antitumor efficacy of the virus aft

Preparation, function, and safety evaluation of a novel degradable dermal filler, the cross-linked poly-γ-glutamic acid hydrogel particles.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid (PGA) is a naturally degradable hydrophilic linear microbial polymer with moisturizing, immunogenic, cross-linking, and hydrogel water absorption properties similar to hyaluronic acid, a biomaterial that is commonly used as a dermal filler. To explore the development feasibility of cross-linked PGA as a novel dermal filler, we studied the local skin response to PGA fillers and the effect of various cross-linking preparations on the average longevity of dermal injection. Injection site inflammation and the formation of collagen and elastin were also determined. PGA hydrogel

Full season efficacy of moxidectin microsphere sustained release formulation for the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in dogs.

The authors report the efficacy of an injectable, moxidectin sustained release (SR) formulation for the prevention of canine heartworm infection in endemic areas in northern and central Italy. Three field trials were carried out on a total of 324 dogs. Two hundred forty-three dogs were treated with moxidectin SR 6 months apart and 81 dogs (positive controls) with moxidectin tablets given monthly for 5 consecutive months during the risk season each year throughout the study. Results of testing for microfilariae and circulating adult female antigens were negative for all the experimentally treat

Does the frequency of administration of long acting injectable antipsychotics impact psychiatric outcomes and adverse effects: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dosing regimens for depot antipsychotics range from two-to twelve-weekly administration. There are limited meta-analytic data regarding the effect of different injection frequencies of the same depot antipsychotic at the equivalent dose on psychiatric outcomes and adverse effects. This study investigated differences in psychiatric outcomes and adverse effects between different frequencies of depot antipsychotics through a systematic review and meta-analysis. We performed a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane database, PsycINFO and two Chinese databases for RCTs that compared the fre

LOCAL IMMUNITY IN EXPERIMENTAL ERYSIPELAS.

The experiments recorded show that the skin involved in the zone of inflammation produced by the endodermal injection of virulent living erysipelas streptococci into rabbits becomes, after the lesion has healed, partially but not completely resistant to subsequent infection with the homologous organism. In the majority of experiments the lesion resulting from the first endodermal injection spread downward, i.e., ventrally, to the site of needle puncture forming an oval or elongated inflammatory zone. Subsequent injections of the same strain into the skin beyond and ventral to the apparent edge

Severe flare of genital warts after intralesional nonvalent HPV vaccine and development of multiple nodules at the sites of injection.

Few effective treatments exists for the elimination of persistant genital warts and recurrences are common. We report the cases of two healthy HIV negative and immunocompetent men with a longstanding history of refractory to treatment and recurrent genital warts were treated with intralesional nonvalent HPV vaccine together with CO2 laser to prevent relapses. One patient developed a severe flare of the disease with multiple tiny lesions and both developed movable, asymptomatic and painless nodules at the sites of injection still present 2 months after treatment. Those are the first reported ca

Cutaneous adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination: A case series of 30 Japanese patients and a review of 93 Japanese studies.

In Japan, cutaneous adverse events (AEs) following the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination have been frequently described; however, a larger case series and literature review are lacking. There is an urgent need for an extensive investigation of new cases and previous reports to provide a thorough body of information about post-COVID-19 immunization cutaneous AEs. We aimed to analyze patients with cutaneous AEs after COVID-19 vaccination in our hospital and review previous studies of cutaneous AEs. We analyzed post-COVID-19 vaccination cutaneous AEs in our department, the Japanese

Histamine H3 receptors regulate vascular permeability changes in the skin of mast cell-deficient mice.

The participation of histamine H(3) receptors in the regulation of skin vascular permeability changes in mast cell-deficient mice was studied. Although intradermal injection of histamine H(3) antagonists, iodophenpropit and clobenpropit, at a dose of 100 nmol/site caused significant increases in skin vascular permeability in both mast cell-deficient (WBB6F1 W/W(v)) and wild-type (WBB6F1 +/+) mice, this response was significantly lower in mast cell-deficient mice than in the wild-type controls. Histamine also caused dose-related increases in skin vascular permeability in both wild-type and mast

Detection of Vaccine-Derived Spike Protein Associated with Immune Cell Infiltration in the Heart and Liver: A Report of Two Cases.

The rapid development and deployment of COVID-19 genetic vaccines have raised significant concerns regarding their safety and potential to trigger immune reactions against self-tissues. This paper provides a comprehensive histopathologically supported analysis of how the synthesis of the vaccine-derived spike protein can trigger such reactions beyond the injection site, characterized by robust immune cell recruitment. We examine these immune responses based on histopathological evidence that delineates a pattern consistent with self-directed immune activity, including vaccine-associated myocar

Herpes zoster following vaccination with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 Coronavirus vaccine (recombinant).

Ever since the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, science has unraveled much knowledge on SARS-CoV-2 which has led to extraordinary and unprecedented progress in developing COVID-19 vaccines. Several adverse cutaneous reactions, ranging from more common local injection site reaction, neutrophilic and pustular drug reactions to flare-up of preexisting dermatoses, have been reported with currently available vaccines. We report a case series of 7 patients who developed herpes zoster (HZ) following the first dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 coronavirus vacci…

Herpes zoster vaccine in Korea.

Herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia deteriorate the quality of life because of severe pain and complications, and cause considerable social and economic burden of disease. In 2012, herpes zoster vaccine was released in Korea. The efficacy of herpes zoster vaccine is known to be 51.3-66.5% among the aged over 60 and 69.8-72.4% among adults between 50 and 59. It is also known that preventive efficacy is maintained for at least 5 years. Although there can be local reactions such as redness, pain and swelling at the site of injection and systemic reaction such as headache and eruption after

Sites of disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier after application of prostaglandin E2 in pigmented rabbits.

We examined the disruption of the blood-aqueous barrier following prostaglandin (PG)-E2 application in rabbits. Vehicle or PGE2 in 10, 50 or 250 microg/ml concentration was applied to the cornea of pigmented rabbit with the use of a glass cylinder. After PGE2 administration, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected intravenously. Then the eyes were enucleated, and distribution of HRP in the anterior segments was examined by electron microscopy. In control eyes, diffusion of HRP was blocked by vascular endothelial cells in the iris and by nonpigmented epithelial cells in the iridial and ciliar

Effective antiviral prophylaxis and therapy by systemic application of human interferon in immunosuppressed monkeys.

Rhesus monkeys treated with antilymphocytic globulin were infected with vaccinia virus or with Medical Lake macaque Herpesvirus. At the sites of inoculation of vaccinia virus, animals not treated with interferon developed typical pustulous reactions and then smaller secondary lesions. Human leukocyte interferon (5 X 10(5) international units per day) injected intramuscularly, either from one day before to three days after infection or for seven days beginning on the first day of primary reaction, suppressed the development of secondary lesions but did not influence the primary reaction.
