Alpha interferon is increasingly used in the treatment of malignancies and viral hepatitis. Renal involvement after its use consist in more cases on proteinuria. We report one case of acute renal failure without nephrotic syndrome but with tubulointerstitiel infiltration by mononuclear cells in 65 old man who had before interferon therapy 151 mumol/l of serum creatinine. Interferon was administrated for digestive carcinoid neoplasia and bone and liver metastasis. Outcome was improvement of renal function after withdrawn of interferon, dialysis and steroid treatment.

Chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects 350 million people worldwide, or approximately 5% of the global population, and commonly results in cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. We report on long-term therapeutic efficacy and toxicity of recombinant interferon-alpha 2a (rIFN-alpha) in a series of 38 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV). In all patients haematocrit was first brought into the normal range by venesection; rIFN-alpha was then begun at a starting weekly dose of 9,000,000 IU. Complete response (CR) was defined as persistence of normal haematocrit without venesection and partial response (PR) as >50% reduction of phlebotomy requirement. The effect of alcohol intake on the efficacy of interferon (IFN) therapy was evaluated retrospectively in patients with chronic hepatitis C diagnosed by liver histology and positive serum hepatitis C virus (HCV)-RNA. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is prevalent in Chinese populations. 40.4% of 383 Chinese HBV carriers studied were HBeAg-positive. The annual rate of spontaneous clearance of HBeAg was 11%. The myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative syndrome (MPS), together with chronic lymphatic leukemia (CLL) are, for the most part, seen in the elderly. Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), however, is not common in this age group. New treatment for the myelodysplastic syndrome is the use of cytokines, for CLL fludarabine, and 2-chloro-2-deoxy-adenosine (2-CDA). The standard form of treatment for CML and other myeloproliferative syndromes is interferon alpha or hydroxyurea, or a combination of the two.
