People-centered care for psoriasis and urticaria: Are we overlooking Internet addiction while only considering patients and physician settings?

Psoriasis and chronic urticaria (CU) are chronic skin diseases with a high impact on individuals' life and mental health. Some studies indicate a high prevalence of Internet addiction and many affected individuals seem not to utilize healthcare, but rather search for health-related information online. The aims of the study were to assess Internet addiction as a potential comorbidity in both diseases as well as identify differences in healthcare utilization between individuals with psoriasis and CU. This cross-sectional study is based on self-reported data from individuals with psoriasis and CU

The Impact of Addictive Behaviors on Adolescents Psychological Well-Being: The Mediating Effect of Perceived Peer Support.

Studies exploring excessive Internet use and gambling are rapidly expanding concerns regarding its impact on mental health, especially in young people due to the increased prevalence of Internet and gambling addictions. Research suggests that perceived peer support plays a significant role in adolescents' psychological well-being. However, no empirical study has dealt with the mediating effect of perceived peer support on the relationship between Internet and gambling addictions and psychological well-being. Thus, the present study aimed to examine whether perceived peer support mediates the r

Scholars' open debate paper on the World Health Organization ICD-11 Gaming Disorder proposal.

Concerns about problematic gaming behaviors deserve our full attention. However, we claim that it is far from clear that these problems can or should be attributed to a new disorder. The empirical basis for a Gaming Disorder proposal, such as in the new ICD-11, suffers from fundamental issues. Our main concerns are the low quality of the research base, the fact that the current operationalization leans too heavily on substance use and gambling criteria, and the lack of consensus on symptomatology and assessment of problematic gaming. The act of formalizing this disorder, even as a proposal, ha

How psychological symptoms relate to different motivations for gambling: an online study of internet gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Gambling can be motivated by both its hedonic value and by attempts to cope with dysphoric or stressful states. Thus, motivations constitute important mechanisms linking mood fluctuations and gambling. However, little is known about how different kinds of affective disturbance, such as mood elevation and dysphoria, motivate gambling behavior. METHODS: To estimate relationships between different mood experiences and gambling motivations, we recruited 4125 Internet gamblers via hyperlinks placed on gambling Web sites. Mean (SD) age of respondents was 35.5 (11.8) years, with 79.1% (3

Functional connectome gradient of prefrontal cortex as biomarkers of high risk for internet gaming disorder.

Adolescents and young adults are considered a high-risk group for internet gaming disorder (IGD). Early screening for high-risk individuals with IGD and exploring the underlying neural mechanisms is an effective strategy to reduce the harm of IGD. We recruited 219 non-internet gaming addicted college students and evaluated them with magnetic resonance imaging, followed by a two-year longitudinal follow-up. We used functional connectome gradient (FCG) to capture the macroscopic hierarchical organization of human brain. Canonical correlation analysis was employed to identify components mapping r

From active escapism to virtual withdrawal: Validation of the Compensatory-Dissociative Online Gaming scales (C-DOGs).

BACKGROUND: In the Compensatory-Dissociative Online Gaming (C-DOG; Giardina et al., 2024) model, we proposed a continuum from compensatory to dissociative gaming involvement. This continuum represents different degrees of integration between physical and virtual environments with three core processes - Active Escapism, Escape, and Dissociation - and two peripheral processes - Gaming-Related Relaxation and Body-Mind Detachment. Here, we developed and tested a multidimensional measure based on this model. METHOD: We capitalized on existing items for measuring escapism and dissociation and we ge

Task-based functional connectivity in internet gaming disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a global public health concern, with excessive gaming impacting daily life and causing psychological distress. However, the neural mechanisms in IGD are unclear, particularly how aberrant functional connectivity (FC) contributes to pathological behavioural dysfunction and how these processes align with leading neurobiological models of addiction. METHOD: This systematic review examines FC changes associated with behavioural symptoms of IGD through analysis of 29 studies conducted between 2013 and 2024. The review encompasses task-based functional

Does emotional distress tolerance negatively predict problematic smartphone use or vice versa? Evidence from a longitudinal study and a daily diary study.

Low emotional distress tolerance (EDT) is a risk factor for problematic smartphone use (PSU). While theoretical and preliminary empirical considerations suggest that PSU may impair EDT, no studies have directly examined their bidirectional relationship. To address this gap, in this research, the bidirectional relationship between PSU and EDT is investigated through two studies among young adults. Study 1 employed a two-wave longitudinal design. A total of 901 young adults (61.7 % women) completed questionnaires three months apart. A cross-lagged regression analysis revealed a significant bidir
