Association between relational trauma and empathy among male offenders in China.

BACKGROUND: Offenders are more likely than the general population to have experienced relationship trauma. They are also more likely to have lower empathy. To date, relationships between historical trauma and later empathic states have not been examined among offenders. AIMS: To explore the association between history of trauma in close personal relationships and empathy among offenders. Our research question is: Is such relational trauma associated with self-rated impairments in empathy? METHODS: All men with a primary school education and above at a single all-male prison in Jiangsu Provin

Differences in anger, hostility, and interpersonal aggressiveness in Type A and Type B adolescents.

This study investigated self-reported anger, hostility, interpersonal aggressiveness, and self-confidence in 19 Type A and 11 Type B adolescent boys ages 15 and 16. It was hypothesized that Type As would report greater trait anger and aggressiveness, less confidence in interpersonal relating, and would endorse a pattern of expression of anger and aggressiveness that would differ from Type Bs. No significant differences were found between Type As and Type Bs on measures of global anger and aggressiveness, and no significant relationship between interpersonal hostility and self-confidence was de

Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and physical space in anorexia nervosa: a virtual reality and repertory grid investigation.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder characterized by severe body image disturbances. Recent studies from spatial cognition showed a connection between the experience of body and of space. The objectives of this study were to explore the meanings that characterize AN experience and to deepen the examination of spatiality in relational terms, through the study of how the patient construes herself and her interpersonal world. More specifically this study aimed (1) to verify whether spatial variables and aspects of construing differentiate patients with AN and healthy controls (HCs) and ar

Mapping the Network Structure of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Emotional and Interpersonal Vulnerability and Attachment in Spanish Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent during adolescence and is associated with a range of emotional, cognitive, and interpersonal vulnerabilities. Although prior research has identified key correlates such as emotion dysregulation, hopelessness, interpersonal distress, and attachment insecurity, these factors have largely been examined in isolation, limiting understanding of how they jointly contribute to NSSI. METHODS: The present study examined the network structure of NSSI and associated vulnerability processes in a community sample of 2067 Spanish adolescents (M

Reciprocal associations between interpersonal dynamics and recovery outcomes in the first year following an alcohol use disorder recovery attempt.

OBJECTIVE: Theoretical models of alcohol use disorder recovery highlight the importance of the social environment, but there is a dearth of longitudinal empirical research investigating bidirectional associations between interpersonal dynamics and outcomes. The present study used longitudinal models to examine between- and within-person associations between both negative (perceived hostility and rejection) and positive (friendship and emotional support) interpersonal dynamics in relation to recovery outcomes (alcohol problems, percent heavy drinking days, percent days abstinent, and quality of

Personality, Interpersonal Problems, and Anxiety Among Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined relationships between personality disorder (PD) features, Big Five personality traits, and interpersonal problems with anxiety. METHOD: Older adults (N = 130) completed the Geriatric Anxiety Scale, Coolidge Axis Two Inventory, Big Five Inventory-2, and Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Problems. Pearson correlation analyses were used to assess simple relationships between anxiety with PD features (CATI scales), Big Five personality domains (BFI-2 scales), and interpersonal problems (CSIP scales). Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determin

Schizotypal traits and their relation to rejection sensitivity in the general population: Their mediation by quality of life, agreeableness and neuroticism.

Schizotypal traits are a cluster of personality styles suggesting a potential liability for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Interpersonal schizotypal traits include cognitive disorganisation which consists of social anxiety, and introvertive anhedonia which consists of a lack of pleasure in social activities. Rejection sensitivity is evident all along this continuum. This study aimed to determine whether psychosocial quality of life (QOL), neuroticism and agreeableness mediates the relation between schizotypy and rejection sensitivity. Three hundred and eighteen participants from a predomina

Trauma, attentional biases, and revictimization among young adults.

Individuals with previous histories of trauma are at increased risk for subsequent victimization and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders. Attentional biases to threat-related stimuli are thought to impact one's ability to recognize future risk in his or her environment and may explain high rates of revictimization. Although the literature has identified three possible types of attentional biases among victims of trauma (i.e., interference, facilitation, and avoidance), findings are mixed. The current study examined attentional biases to threats a

Biased and inflexible interpretations of social situations predict depressive symptoms and relational outcomes in parent-adolescent dyads.

Adolescence is a critical period for social-emotional development, characterized by increased risk for psychopathology and disruptive changes in the parent-adolescent relationship. Biased and inflexible interpretations of social situations have been linked to psychopathology and adaptive social functioning, but these associations are rarely studied in adolescence. To address this gap, the present study examined whether interpretation bias and cognitive inflexibility are associated between parents and adolescents, and whether these factors relate to depressive symptoms and relational perception

Parental and Peer Relationships and Their Impact on Symptom Severity in Adolescent Patients With Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived parental relationship characteristics, such as maternal overprotection, rejection or neglect, and peer victimisation, are suggested to be more common in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) than in healthy controls. This study compares parental and peer relationships in adolescent patients with AN to those in a clinical control group (CC; a matched group of patients with other mental disorders) and investigates their association with AN severity. METHOD: Self-reported parental and peer relationships were compared between adolescents with AN (n = 43) and CC (n = 127), match

Associations between relationship quality and treatment-related stress among couples receiving methadone for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social relationships may buffer or exacerbate stress among patients receiving methadone treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Little is known, however, about how relationship quality is linked to treatment-related stress among couples in which both partners receive methadone. We considered the links between relationship quality and treatment-related stress among couples in methadone treatment for OUD. METHODS: Participants for this cross-sectional observational study included 60 heterosexual married or cohabiting couples aged 18 and older drawn from two opioid treatment program

A multimethod examination of negative behaviors during couples interactions and problem drinking trajectories.

Models of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are increasingly conceptualizing social and relationship factors as being critical to the understanding of problem drinking. Close relationships involving conflict have been a particular research focus, and partners' expressions of negative emotion are theorized to affect drinking among those with AUD. Although it has long been presumed that behaviors during couples interactions influence drinking-and this assumption has informed many modern treatments for AUD-this hypothesis has not been directly tested. We bring multiple methods to bear on this question,

Influence of family of origin and adult romantic partners on romantic attachment security.

According to attachment theory, attachment style derives from social experiences throughout the life span. The authors tested this expectation by examining associations between the quality of observed interaction patterns in the family of origin during adolescence and self-reported romantic attachment style and observed romantic relationship behaviors in adulthood (ages 25 and 27). Family and romantic relationship interactions were rated by trained observers from video recordings of structured conversation tasks. Attachment style was assessed with items from D. W. Griffin and K. Bartholomew's

Emotional trade-offs of becoming a parent: how social roles influence self-discrepancy effects.

Why do some people suffer from becoming a parent, whereas others do not? New parents' actual selves were related to their own hopes for themselves (ideal self) and to their spouse's sense of their responsibilities (ought self). Prebirth actual-ideal discrepancies predicted increased sadness or dejection after birth (especially for couples in longer marriages), whereas prebirth actual-ought discrepancies predicted decreased nervousness or agitation after birth (especially for mothers and couples with a less "easy" child). Becoming a parent introduces new demands that both interfere with attaini

A technique of sexual counselling.

A method of sexual counselling based on the technique originally proposed by Masters and Johnson but modified to suit local conditions is described. The method is basically "client-centred" and depends on interviewing both partners of a sexually inadequate relationship so that the clients themselves set the level of desired sexual achievement. Factors which may inhibit a sexual relationship are explored, particularly those involving cultural, moral, religious, education or financial matters. Ejaculatory problems and orgasmic dysfunction are treated in the manner described by Masters and Johnso

The efficacy of antidepressant medication versus interpersonal psychotherapy for depression in middle-aged women: a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Depression is highly prevalent in middle-aged women (MAW), but head-to-head comparisons of first-line interventions in this population are scarce. This systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis examined the comparative efficacy of antidepressant medication (ADM) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for MAW (aged 40-64) versus other adults (men and non-MAW) on depression, quality of life, and interpersonal problem measures. METHODS: PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched January 1, 2025 to identify randomized trials comparing ADM
