OBJECTIVE: To review the diagnosis and treatment of colovaginal fistulas from various causes.
DATA SOURCES: Papers on colovaginal fistulas were identified using Ovid and PubMed. The search terms used were as follows: colovaginal fistulas, rectovaginal fistulas, diverticular disease and fistulas.
METHODS OF STUDY: Articles were selected based on their relevance to colovaginal fistulas and were then further subdivided into epidemiology, etiology, presentation, diagnosis and management.
RESULTS: English-language papers were selected based on their relevance to all aspects of colovaginal fistul

Crohn's disease (CD) is a transmural inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. With the disease's progression, adhesions and transmural fissuring, intra-abdominal abscesses, and fistula tracts may develop. An anal fistula (or fistula-in-ano) is a chronic abnormal epithelial lined tract communicating the anorectal lumen (internal opening) to the perineal or buttock skin (external opening). The risk of fistula development varies from 14%-38%. It can cause significant morbidity, which adversely impacts the quality of life. It is mostly believed

Abdominal tuberculosis can present as tuberculous peritonitis with generalised or loculated ascites, lymphadenitis of the mesenteric or retroperitoneal nodes, or as intestinal tuberculosis. In the last case it could be annular mucosal ulceration, single or multiple strictures or hyperplastic tuberculosis of the bowel, usually involving the terminal ileum or ileocaecal region. Disease higher in the ileum is considered common but involvement of the appendix, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, colon and rectum is unusual. Tuberculous peritonitis presenting as a coloenteric fistula is not a common clinic

Diverticular disease is common in Western countries; one-third of patients with diverticular disease develop diverticulitis during their lifetime of whom 5% may experience serious complications. We describe a rare complication of diverticulitis: a duodeno-colic fistula in a patient with an elongated sigmoid colon (dolicosigma). The patient complained of abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, and feculent vomiting. Radiological studies and gastroscopy demonstrated a fistula between the second portion of the duodenum and the sigmoid colon. Curative surgery cured the fistula and completely resolv

•we report the case of a 36-year-old female patient who presented to our hospital with a diagnosis of cystitis glandularis manifesting as a vesicovaginal fistula. She underwent cystoscopic biopsy at a local hospital, but anti-inflammatory treatment was ineffective, and the patient was experiencing low urination frequency and urgency, as well as pain. The patient underwent laparoscopic repair of a cystoscopy-confirmed vesicovaginal fistula. After surgery, the patient experienced a paroxysm of Crohn's disease with multiple small bowel fistulas and erosion of the external iliac vessels that ruptu

PURPOSE: Pyeloduodenal fistula (PDF) is a communication between the renal pelvis and the duodenum. It is often secondary to other diseases. It is a rare condition and therefore infrequently described in the literature. The aim is to present a review of the current literature on PDF and to give an update of its aetiology, symptoms, investigations and treatments.
METHODS: Pubmed, Cochrane Library and Embase were used to search for existing literature in English and Scandinavian languages with available abstracts in the period Jan 2000-Dec 2023.
RESULTS: No meta-analysis or reviews were found.

A biliary fistula which may occur spontaneously or after surgery, is an abnormal communication from the biliary system to an organ, cavity or free surface. Spontaneous biliary-enteric fistula is a rare complication of gallbladder pathology, with over 90% of them secondary to cholelithiasis. Approximately 6% are due to perforating peptic ulcers. Symptoms of biliary-enteric fistula varies widely and usually non-specific, mimicking any chronic biliary disease. Cholecystoduodenal fistula causing severe upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleed is very rare. Bleeding cholecystoduodenal fistula commonly re

Enterovesical fistula (EVF) is an abnormal communication between the intestine and the bladder. It represents a rare complication of inflammatory or neoplastic disease, and traumatic or iatrogenic injuries. The most common aetiologies are diverticular disease and colorectal carcinoma. Over 75% of affected patients describe pathognomonic features of pneumaturia, faecaluria and recurrent urinary tract infections. The diagnosis of EVF can be challenging, and frequently patients are monitored for months before the condition is recognised and treated effectively. Diagnostic tools include laboratory

A sigmoid tuberculosis is very rare. We report a case of sigmoid pseudotumoral tuberculosis with a fistulization into the urinary bladder in a 10-year-old girl. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was made by histopathological examination of the surgical specimen after segmental colectomy. Surgery completed by antitubercular chemotherapy gave a good result.

Urachal cysts are unusual anomalies resulting from incomplete closure of the urachus. They comprise 38 per cent of urachal abnormalities. They present commonly in childhood, and there are only 20 reported cases of urachal cysts presenting in a person over the age of 40. Only one reported case appears of urachal-colonic fistula, and this was in the setting of colonic diverticulitis. This report presents the second reported case of urachal-colonic fistula and the first case of a fistula in a patient with a normal colon. The pathophysiology and management of urachal cyst are discussed.

Fistulas secondary to Crohn's disease occur in about 33% of patients. A colobronchial fistula complicating Crohn's disease is very rare, having been reported only twice previously. We present an unusual fistula secondary to Crohn's colitis that originated from the splenic flexure and crossed the diaphragm to involve the bronchial tree.

Split notochord syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly. We present the history of a 16-day-old male infant who presented to us with a lumbosacral meningomyelocoele and a dorsal enteric fistula along with the cleft of lower vertebrae. Review of the literature, has revealed eight such cases with very few survivals. We successfully treated the patient.

Colonogastric fistula, more commonly called "gastrocolic," is a rare complication of Crohn's colitis. The 17th incidence of this fistula is reported. Fecal halitosis is a prominent symptom. Barium enema is the most accurate diagnostic tool. Colonoscopy plays a role in delineating surgical therapy. The stomach resection is described. Because of its pathogenesis, the authors prefer to call this "colonogastric" fistula, rather than gastrocolic fistula.

A patient is reported who developed a fistula between the hip and the caecum 39 years after arthrodesis of her hip. She presented with a painful right hip and radiographs showed that the Smith-Petersen nail used for arthrodesis had moved up through the acetabulum and into the pelvic cavity. The nail was removed but within a week a fistula which discharged alimentary contents had developed between the hip and the caecum. The patient was treated conservatively, and three weeks later the fistula had closed.
