Effect of a herbal galactagogic formula combined with auricular acupressure on breast milk production and hormonal profiles in women with postpartum hypogalactia: A randomized controlled study.

Postpartum hypogalactia is a common condition that may impair breastfeeding and maternal-infant health. This randomized controlled study evaluated the efficacy of a herbal galactagogic decoction combined with auricular acupressure in improving lactation outcomes. A total of 104 women with postpartum hypogalactia were enrolled between July 2023 and June 2025 and randomly assigned to a control group (auricular acupressure alone, n=52) or an intervention group (auricular acupressure plus herbal decoction, n=52) for 2 weeks. Primary outcomes included breast milk production and formula supplementat

Amenorrhea and galactorrhea: results of therapy with 2-Brom-alpha-ergocryptine (CB-154).

Administration of Brom-ergocryptine (CB-154) has a dramatic effect on breast secretion. Inhibition of lactation occurs within three to four weeks in women with amenorrhea and galactorrhea. Resumption of normal ovulatory function was documented by serum progesterone levels, as well as pregnancy, in three of four women attempting to conceive. Serum prolactin levels become normal following initiation of Brom-ergocryptine. Discontinuation of Brom-ergocryptine was found to result in a return of both inappropriate lactation and elevation of serum prolactin in this study. No deleterious side effects

Redox status in very-low birth-weight newborns.

Inborn metabolic diseases, such as disorders in pyruvate metabolism, in gluconeogenesis or in the respiratory chain, may present with lactic acidosis in newborn infants. A simple tool to screen for the efficacy of mitochondrial oxidation reduction activity is the detection of the redox status through simultaneous measurements of plasma lactate, pyruvate and ketone bodies, which are strongly influenced by feeding and stress. We present the redox status values of 55 very-low birth-weight infants under different nutritional conditions. We were able to demonstrate that the redox status values are

Clinical index to quantify the 1-year risk for common postpartum mental disorders at the time of delivery (PMH CAREPLAN): development and internal validation.

BACKGROUND: Common postpartum mental health (PMH) disorders such as depression and anxiety are preventable, but determining individual-level risk is difficult. AIMS: To create and internally validate a clinical risk index for common PMH disorders. METHOD: Using population-based health administrative data in Ontario, Canada, comprising sociodemographic, clinical and health service variables easily collectible from hospital birth records, we developed and internally validated a predictive model for common PMH disorders and converted the final model into a risk index. We developed the model in

Functional mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies for lactylation in liver diseases.

Lactylation, a novel form of lactate-mediated protein post-translational modification (PTM), has been identified as a crucial regulator of gene expression and protein function through the modification of both histone and non-histone proteins. Liver disease is frequently characterized by a reprogramming of glucose metabolism and subsequent lactate accumulation. Recent research has implicated lactylation in a diverse array of hepatic pathologies, including liver injury, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Consequently, lactylation has emerged as a piv

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma complicated by invasive pulmonary aspergillosis: a rare presentation.

We describe a patient with persisting fevers, a progressive pulmonary infiltrate, and high levels of serum lactate dehydrogenase. No underlying cause for these changes was found prior to her death despite extensive investigations. Postmortem tissue revealed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and subsequent brain examination revealed vascular changes in keeping with intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL). On review, subtle yet extensive lymphomatous infiltrates involved the vasculature of multiple other organs, including the lungs. Aspergillosis is a relatively rare presenting feature of ly

Seafood During Pregnancy and Lactation and Child Neurocognitive Development: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Assessing seafood as a food group, rather than as a source of omega-3 fatty acids or contaminants, may better inform dietary guidance for pregnancy and lactation. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess relationships between seafood consumption during pregnancy and lactation and neurocognitive development in the child. METHODS: Three electronic databases were searched up to September 2024 to update a previous search from 2000 to 2019. Articles were included if seafood intake during pregnancy or lactation and a child outcome was assessed [neurocognitive development including cogniti

Administration of an Immune Stimulant during the Transition Period Improved Lipid Metabolism and Rumination without Affecting Inflammatory Status.

Omnigen-AF (OAF) increases leukocyte functions in immunosuppressed animal models and reduces incidence of infectious diseases in early lactating dairy cows, although its mode of action is still unclear. This study aims to provide a wider perspective of the metabolic effect of OAF to test its potential as a strategy to address metabolic disorders of the transition period. A group of 10 Holstein dairy cows were divided into 2 groups: The treated group (IMS; 5 cows) received 32.5 g of OAF twice a day (65 g d-1) as top-dress in the morning and afternoon feeds from -55 to 42 days from calving (DFC)

Management of an acute outbreak of diarrhoea-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome with early plasma exchange in adults from southern Denmark: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome in adults is a life-threatening, but rare multisystem disorder that is characterised by acute haemolytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia, and renal insufficiency. We aimed to assess the success of management of this disorder with plasma exchange therapy. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with diarrhoea-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome in southern Denmark were treated with daily plasma exchange by centrifugation and substitution with fresh frozen plasma. Stool culture and serological testing was done to identify the cause of disease, and t

Sweat: a potential marker of clinical activity in panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Panic disorder (PD) is a paroxysmal neuropsychiatric disorder with unclear etiology and obscure pathophysiology. Despite the frequency of its occurrence, PD still has no reliable laboratory markers. The sweat is a neglected human secrete reacting immediately to various neurovegetative challenges including psychic imupulses. We hypothesized a possible dysfunction of sweat homeosthasis in PD. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 10 patients with active PD, 9 patients with PD in remission and 11 age-matched controls participated in this study. All subjects underwent a single 8-min session in the dry

Cows with feed restriction-induced hyperketonemia early postpartum have a different immunometabolic profile than healthy cows or cows with inflammatory disorders.

Immune activation and subsequent inflammation lead to difficult transitions from pregnancy to lactation. Whether postpartum hyperketonemia can occur independently of immune activation remains controversial. Our objective was to compare immunometabolic profiles in blood serum from healthy cows, healthy feed-restricted cows, and cows with naturally occurring inflammatory disorders. Multiparous Holsteins (n = 32) were fed a dry period diet until parturition. After parturition, all cows were fed a lactation diet at ad libitum intake until 5 DIM. At 4 DIM, cows underwent a thorough physical examina

Acute Management of Neurological Events in Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-Like Episodes (MELAS) Syndrome: A Case Report.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a rare mitochondrial disorder characterized by recurrent stroke-like episodes, seizures, and progressive neurological decline. We presented the case of an 18-year-old female, diagnosed with MELAS syndrome at age 11, who presented with acute vision loss and seizures. Neuroimaging revealed acute infarcts in the occipital and parietal lobes, consistent with MELAS syndrome-related strokes. Elevated lactate levels confirmed metabolic dysfunction. Management included arginine supplementation, seizure medication opt

The Impact of Substance Use Disorder and Drug Transfer into Breast Milk: Implications for Maternal and Infant Health.

Breast milk provides significant health benefits to both infants and mothers, offering protection against infections and enhancing cognitive development. This paper examines the complex effects of substance use disorder (SUD) during pregnancy and lactation, focusing on the pharmacokinetics of drug transfer into breast milk. It highlights the mechanisms by which drugs enter milk, emphasizing the roles of passive diffusion and active transport, particularly through breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP). The study explores the impact of various substances on fetal and infant health, with a focu

Myoclonus and mitochondrial myopathy.

The CNS diseases that are associated with mitochondrial myopathy have been reviewed in this chapter. The disorders causing myoclonus have been compared to those in which myoclonus has been reported. Both groups have been associated with lactate and pyruvate accumulation, and both have a wide spectrum of clinical and pathologic findings. Deficiency of components of the respiratory chain has been offered as an explanation for the mitochondrial accumulation in the muscles of these patients. Skeletal muscle respiratory-chain components may be deficient, and there is experimental evidence that indi

[Standardized aerobic walking on the treadmill by healthy probands and patients with mitochondrial and non-mitochondrial myopathies].

Mitochondrial myopathies are characterized by an abnormal aerobic metabolism. The present study examines the serum lactate concentration during standardized aerobic treadmill ergometry and evaluates its relevance for the diagnosis of mitochondrial myopathies. The present study includes 50 volunteers without neuromuscular disorders (control group), 13 patients with mitochondrial, and 14 patients with non-mitochondrial neuromuscular disorders. All members of the control group were able to walk 15 minutes on the treadmill at a constant velocity of at least 5 km/h without exceeding the aerobic thr

Effects of prepartum diets supplemented with rolled oilseeds on calf birth weight, postpartum health, feed intake, milk yield, and reproductive performance of dairy cows.

The objectives were to determine the effects of supplemental fat (no oilseed vs. oilseed) during late gestation and the source of fat (canola vs. sunflower seed), on dry matter intake (DMI), plasma metabolite concentrations, milk production and composition, calf birth weight, postpartum health disorders, ovarian function and reproductive performance in dairy cows. Pregnant Holstein cows, blocked by body condition and parity, were assigned to 1 of 3 diets containing rolled canola seed (high in oleic acid; n=43) or sunflower (high in linoleic acid; n=45) at 8% of dry matter, or no oilseed (contr

Placental Adaptations to Maternal Nutritional Insults as Targets Against the Obesity Epidemic.

The worldwide obesity epidemic presents a considerable public health and economic challenge globally. While lifestyle and genetic predisposition are recognized obesogenic factors, compelling evidence indicates that maternal nutritional "insults" (MNI) occurring before pregnancy, during pregnancy, or during lactation predispose the offspring to obesity and other cardiometabolic disorders in adulthood. This phenomenon termed developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) can be utilized to formulate intervention strategies aimed at counteracting the developmental programming of obesity in s
