Human anisakiasis is caused by the consumption of raw, marinated or undercooked fish and squid infected with nematodes of the genus Anisakis Dujardin, 1845. In view of food safety, this study was carried out to examine the distribution of Anisakis species in marine fishes within Japanese waters. Seven fish species from six localities were collected and examined for Anisakis infection. Copper toxicity in different embryonic and larval stages of the common South American toad Rhinella arenarum was evaluated by means of continuous and 24-h pulse treatments in 12 different developmental stages. In order to obtain greater insight into the relevant genomic expression patterns of Trichinella spiralis, 992 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were collected from a cDNA library of T. spiralis muscle stage larvae and assembled into 60 clusters and 385 singletons. Of them, 445 (44.7%) ESTs were annotated to their homologous genes, and small fractions were matched to known genes of nematodes. The annotated ESTs were classified into 25 eukaryotic orthologous groups (KOG). Cytochrome C oxidase (34 clones) was found to be most frequent species.

Group A consisted of chickens infected with a single dose of Ascaris suum and group B of chickens infected with two successive doses. At days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 after the first or second infection dose, six chickens from each group were sacrificed. We have previously demonstrated that during pregnancy there exists an increased parasiticide activity against Trichinella spiralis newborn larvae (NBL) in infected rats. The paper describes a case of cutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of Hypoderma bovis. Its prolonged recurrent course over 4 months was observed. It appeared as migrating mass lesions, toxicoallergic reactions, and syncope. We describe a case of imported double cutaneous infestation with Dermatobia hominis acquired in Central America. The characteristic clinical picture is a growing furuncular lesion with continuous secretion from a small central orifice. Because of the resemblance to a bacterial infection, there is a risk of diagnostic failure. Increasing incidence of imported myiasis may be expected as a result of increased travel activity to endemic areas. A certain knowledge of this disease is therefore required.

Pesticide formulations containing pyrethrins are being used to treat salmonids for infestations of the copepod parasites Lepeophtherius salmonis and Caligus elongatus (sea lice).
