Superficial leiomyosarcomas are rare in the head and neck region. Because of the infrequent nature of soft tissue sarcomas in general, superficial leiomyosarcomas are often misdiagnosed on clinical grounds. Immunohistochemistry is essential for an accurate histologic diagnosis, and it should include a broad panel of antibody studies. Intra-abdominal leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma was diagnosed in 6 dogs that had hypoglycemia (resting blood glucose concentration < 50 mg/dl). Tumors were large (12 to 24 cm) and arose from intra-abdominal structures including the jejunum, pylorus, duodenum, stomach, and liver. Four dogs had a leiomyoma, and 2 dogs had a leiomyosarcoma. In those dogs in which the tumor was successfully removed at surgery, blood glucose concentration returned to the reference range after tumor resection. Four dogs lived for at least 12 months after tumor resection, without redeveloping hypoglycemia.

This study reports three cases of leiomyosarcoma of the small intestine (a rare malignant neoplasm) presenting in our department of general surgery over a period of ten years. Tumors in these three patients were located in the jejunum and clinical features included severe gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction and/or abdominal pain. In an uncommon presentation of gastric leiomyosarcoma, a rare malignancy of the stomach, a patient aged 63 years was admitted due to progressive exertional dyspnea. Plain film and computed tomography of the chest showed that this patient had a mediastinal neoplasm and the pulmonary function test revealed compromised pulmonary function. Operative findings revealed that this tumor arose in the esophageal-cardiac junction with mediastinal extension; the pathology report was leiomyosarcoma. The patient recovered well and the pulmonary embarrassement was relieved in the succeeding one-year period.

A 61-year old man is described with recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding, due to a metastatic jejunal leiomyosarcoma. Because of the low incidence and the aspecific symptoms, a long delay occurred until the bleeding tumour and its metastases were demonstrated at radionuclide scanning and mesenteric angiography. The tumour-bearing segment could be removed by simple surgical excision.

Primary leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is of rare occurrence. From 1988 to 1992, 4 cases, all female, were treated in our hospital. Symptoms of this rare tumor were not typical except pain in the abdomen and the back. But it was painless in one patient. We report a fortuitous occurrence of a small bowel leiomyosarcoma infected with Schistosoma mekongi in an elderly patient from Kampuchea. S mekongi is endemic in countries along the lower Mekong River basin (Laos, Thailand, and Kampuchea), where its intermediate snail hosts (Lithoglyphopsis aperta) are found. A rare case of a newborn infant with leiomyosarcoma of the transverse colon is reported. The condition was associated with meconium peritonitis due to a perforation proximal to a portion of the transverse colon that was completely surrounded by the tumor. The 12 previously published cases of leiomyosarcoma of the colorectum in childhood are reviewed, and the pathogenesis of meconium peritonitis is discussed.

A case of a leiomyosarcoma of the duodenum is reported. A 52-year-old man with a duodenal submucosal tumor underwent a pancreatico-duodenectomy. Histologically, the resected tumor revealed moderate cellular atypism and moderate pleomorphism, but revealed no mitotic figures. The histological diagnosis was leiomyoma. Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava is reported with increasing frequency but remains a rare lesion. In this article we report one case and review 69 cases. The disease affects mainly women approximately 50 years of age. The symptoms vary according to the location of the tumor; Budd-Chiari syndrome and leg edema occur in the more centrally located tumors and abdominal pain and swelling are seen in the more peripherally located ones. In a 60-year-old man, a swelling anteromedially just below the knee led to the discovery of an intraosseous leiomyosarcoma. It is the 13th documented case of primary leiomyosarcoma of bone outside the facial skeleton. Clinical and pathologic findings, modes of treatment and therapeutic results are reviewed, and theories of histogenesis discussed. As to the latter, ultrastructural features in our case support the pleuripotent mesenchymal rather than the vascular smooth muscle origin.

Leiomyosarcomas as primary tumors are usually found in the corpus uteri or the cervix, they are extremely rare in the vagina. The cytological diagnosis was difficult, as a differentiation between Leiomyosarcoma, Melanoma and mesodermal mixed-tumor by means of cytology is not univocal. The histological diagnosis is certain. The tumor is demonstrated in its many histological and cytological aspects. The reaction to radiation is poor. Prognosis depends upon time of diagnosis and treatment and is usually unfavorable.
