Trauma exposure among children with oppositional defiant disorder and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

Consecutive admissions to an outpatient child psychiatry clinic diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or adjustment disorder were assessed for trauma exposure by a structured clinical interview and parent report. Controlling for age, gender, severity of internalizing behavior problems, social competence, family psychopathology, and parent-child relationship quality (assessed by parent report), an ODD diagnosis, with or without comorbid ADHD, was associated with increased likelihood of prior victimization (but not nonvictimization)

Precipitating factors and life events in serious suicide attempts among youths aged 13 through 24 years.

OBJECTIVE: Precipitating factors and life events associated with medically serious suicide attempts were examined in young people making serious suicide attempts and control subjects. METHOD: Using a case-control design, the authors contrasted 129 young people making serious suicide attempts with 153 randomly selected community controls on a series of life event occurrences within the preceding year. Precipitating factors for serious suicide attempts were also examined. RESULTS: The most common precipitants of serious suicide attempts were relationship breakdowns, other interpersonal problem

The premenstrual phase and reactions to aversive events: a study of hormonal influences on emotionality.

Fifty-eight normal cycle, healthy women were confronted with an aversive, anger-provoking situation in the laboratory. Eighteen women were tested in their follicular phase. A further 40 women were tested in the premenstrual phase, half of whom reported suffering from complaints of premenstrual emotional lability and irritation, the other half reported being without premenstrual problems. Apart from a strong effect of emotion induction on cardiovascular arousal and anger-related moods in the follicular and premenstrual groups, a premenstrual phase effect was also demonstrated, with premenstrual

A comparative study of psychological aspects of recurring and non-recurring functional aphonias.

The present study is based on the hypothesis that patients with recurrent attacks of aphonia differ from those with non-recurring attacks of aphonia in their anxiety levels, social assertiveness and stress-coping strategies. A comparison was made between 21 women with recurring aphonia and 19 women with non-recurring aphonia with respect to these three factors. Seventeen healthy women served as volunteers. Compared to patients with non-recurring aphonias, patients with recurring aphonias exhibited a significantly higher level of anxiety and significantly more respect for social norms and codes

Stress and anxious-depressed symptoms among adolescents: searching for mechanisms of risk.

This study was an examination of the possible mechanisms of risk among adolescents (n = 55) exposed to the stress associated with the diagnosis of cancer in a parent. Girls whose mothers had cancer reported significantly more anxious-depressed symptoms than girls whose fathers were ill or boys whose mothers or fathers had cancer. Increased family responsibilities and the use of ruminative coping were examined as possible mechanisms leading to increased distress in girls with ill mothers. Although girls reported the use of more ruminative coping, rumination did not account for the impact of mat

Life events and symptomatic recovery of army spouses following Operation Desert Storm.

The relation between life events and psychiatric symptoms among wives of soldiers deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm (ODS) was examined. Psychiatric symptoms were measured, using the 25-item Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL), at two times, once while the soldiers were away and a second time several months after they returned. In a multiple regression analysis, symptoms at Time 2 were predicted by post-Desert Storm events as well as by events and emotional stressors that occurred during the military operation. The strongest predictor of post-Desert Storm events was pre-De

"Taking another route": daily survival narratives from mothers who are homeless.

Homelessness among families has become a growing social problem for communities, yet little is known about the types of daily survival strategies such families employ. This paper presents results of a qualitative study of the coping narratives of 64 mothers living in temporary emergency shelters with their children. The women reported using a variety of coping responses to daily stressful events. These included the use of direct actions and more palliative strategies. Results suggest that stress and coping theory may be useful for understanding homelessness. Implications for program developmen

Psychiatric treatment of older African Americans.

Older black Americans are increasingly seen in mental health settings, although prevalence rates of many psychiatric disorders in this group are unknown because black Americans are underrepresented in epidemiologic studies. Improved treatment of this population requires an understanding of the biopsychosocial context of their lives, including historic events that have affected them and the influence of African values emphasizing community and family. Risk factors for mental disorders among older black Americans include multiple medical problems and resulting polypharmacy as well as stressors s

Depressive reactions to failure in a naturalistic setting: a test of the hopelessness and self-esteem theories of depression.

We tested the hopelessness and self-esteem theories of depression and an integration of the two by examining whether a stable, global attributional style (attributional diathesis) and low self-esteem interacted with the outcomes students received on a midterm examination to predict their subsequent depressive reactions over the course of 5 days. Students' immediate depressive reactions (on receipt of grades) were predicted solely by the examination outcome, whereas their enduring depressive reactions during the following 4 days were predicted by the Attributional Diathesis x Low Self-Esteem x

Social support and victims of crime: matching event, support, and outcome.

Investigated the buffering properties of six types of social support (three perceived, three received) with regard to four psychological consequences (depression, anxiety, fear of crime, hostility) of criminal victimization (violent crime, property crime). These relationships were examined using longitudinal data collected from a sample composed of representative subsamples of victims and nonvictims. Effects of the perceived support measures (perceived appraisal support, perceived tangible support, self-esteem) were more pervasive than those of the received support measures (received informati

Hyperventilation is not diagnostically specific to panic patients.

It has been claimed that hyperventilation is a cause of panic attacks in patients suffering from panic disorder (PD), and various studies have, in fact, documented low resting CO2 in PD patients. However, most comparisons have been made using non-psychiatric controls. Since increased ventilation is a common concomitant of distress, the relevance of using healthy/non-anxious control groups may be questioned. Respiratory peculiarities of PD patients may actually just reflect background anxiety rather than a diagnostically specific feature. In order to explore the possible diagnostic specificity

Cognition and coping in agoraphobia and depression: a multivariate approach.

A multivariate strategy for the cognitive study of overlapping symptom disorders is presented and exemplified by an empirical investigation. Inpatients who met DSM-III-R criteria for anxiety and/or unipolar depressive disorders were assessed on 13 agoraphobic and depressive symptom subscales. Factor analyses of these scales were performed and yielded an agoraphobic and a depressive factor. The patients (N = 117) completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales, the Attributional Style Questionnaire, and the Ways of Coping Check List. Stepwise regression analyses were performed wit

The Karolinska Psychodynamic Profile. I. Validity and dimensionality.

The Karolinska Psychodynamic Profile (KAPP) is a new rating instrument based on psychoanalytical theory that is intended to assess relatively stable modes of mental functioning, as they appear in self-perception and in interpersonal relations. The 18 subscales of the KAPP and their scale steps are described in detail. The information needed for assessment is obtained through a structural interview procedure. The KAPP can discriminate between patients with and without a DSM-III diagnosis. It does not appear to be sensitive to the strain of a major life event. Comparison between interview-based

Childhood experiences and repeated suicidal behavior.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the influence of various events in childhood on suicidal behavior in adult age. For this purpose, 99 patients admitted to the Department of Psychiatry of Odense University Hospital after making a suicide attempt were followed for 5 years, to register repeated suicidal behavior. The results showed that three fourths of the patients attempted suicide more than once (62% nonfatal and 14% fatal outcome). The sex distribution was about the same among the first-evers as among the repeaters. Most repeaters were younger people in their twenties and thirties, and

Personality, life stress and the course of eating disorders.

We tested whether personality disturbance and stressful life events can help explain why some patients with Anorexia nervosa or Bulimia nervosa remain ill for several years. In a follow-up of 37 patients, both factors were found to be significantly associated with a poorer outcome after a year, and preliminary data suggest this trend continues after two years. Further follow-up is necessary, but the data so far suggests that treatment goals and methods must be tailored to widely dissimilar needs. They also imply that therapeutic efforts to help patients cope with stressful events may be reward

Anorexia nervosa. Treatment and triggering factors.

In the period from 1976 to 1983, 84 anorexia nervosa (AN) patients were treated in the Medical and Child Psychiatry Units of the University Hospital of Bergen. Five were men, 79 women. The criteria used for diagnosis are DSM-III (1) A,B,D and E, but not C. All the patients in this study were treated according to the methods of Bassøe & Eskeland (2) and Bassøe (3) in order to give the patients the necessary insight into the pathophysiology of hunger and to inform them about the symptoms. Those of the patients with personal problems connected with their family or social milieu were given help th

Attributional change during psychotherapy.

Previous research suggests that causal attributions for life-events are involved in the process of recovery from depression. The study assessed depressive symptoms and attributions before and after treatment in 40 clients. Each client received two forms of therapy in a cross-over design: Exploratory (relationship-oriented, interpersonal) therapy, and Prescriptive (cognitive-behavioural) therapy. During the course of treatment, attributions became significantly more unstable, specific and controllable. There was a positive relation between attributional change and change in depression symptoms,

Life events obtained via interview: the effect of time of recall on data obtained in controls and patients with panic disorder.

Because previous studies have documented the distorting effect of time of recall on the reporting of life events over a one-year period of time, the relation between various life event measures and time of recall over time periods greater than one year was examined in 44 patients with panic disorder and 44 control subjects. For both groups, time of recall was unrelated to any of nine life event measures. The implications of these findings for life event studies requiring retrospection greater than one year are discussed.

The social ecology of anxiety. Theoretical and quantitative perspectives.

Experience sampling is a relatively new research approach that captures relevant variations in experience and symptoms in the course of everyday life. In this paper, a socioecological frame of reference that integrates psychological, historical, cultural, and developmental theories about anxiety phenomena will be illustrated using quantitative descriptions of anxiety and avoidance behaviors gathered with the Experience-Sampling Method. The interaction between anxiety symptoms and the environment in which they occurred is explored in a case study that points to possibilities for future research
