Hypergravity effects on pregnancy and parturition.

The events of mammalian parturition (labor and birth) were analyzed in Norway rats exposed to either 1.0-g, 1.5-g or 2.0-g hypergravity (hg) beginning at the approximate midpoint of their pregnancies. Pregnant dams were 24h timelapse videorecorded during parturition (days 22-23). Compared with 1-g controls, hg dams displayed one-half as many lordosis contractions, the predominant labor contraction type in rats. The timing of birth, duration of delivery and number of neonates born was comparable in hg and 1-g control dams. Results are discussed in relation to earlier findings that, following sp

Successful Resuscitation: Novel Partnership between Paramedics and U.S. Coast Guard.

In this article, we present a notable case that illustrates a novel partnership between a United States Coast Guard small boat station and a civilian paramedic response unit. Patients who experience medical emergencies in remote environments are at particularly high risk for morbidity and mortality. For the most serious conditions, delayed contact with Advanced Life Support (ALS) has grave results. Typically, these circumstances involve small groups of individuals and cannot be easily predicted. The waters off the coasts of Maui, Hawaii, however, host millions of residents and visitors annuall

Feeling understood for the first time: experiences of participation in rehabilitation after out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest.

AIMS: Survivors of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) may suffer from long-term cognitive, psychological, or physical post-arrest consequences impacting and disrupting daily life. To adjust to and manage daily life is critical, and therefore a tailored rehabiliation programme was introduced to the participants. The study aimed to explore the lived experience among cardiac arrest survivors. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were gathered through six focus group interviews during a cardiac arrest rehabilitation programme. Thirty-three out-of-hospital SCA survivors (8 women and 25 men) particip

Objectivizing issues in the diagnosis of complex rare diseases: lessons learned from testing existing diagnosis support systems on ciliopathies.

BACKGROUND: There are approximately 8,000 different rare diseases that affect roughly 400 million people worldwide. Many of them suffer from delayed diagnosis. Ciliopathies are rare monogenic disorders characterized by a significant phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity that raises an important challenge for clinical diagnosis. Diagnosis support systems (DSS) applied to electronic health record (EHR) data may help identify undiagnosed patients, which is of paramount importance to improve patients' care. Our objective was to evaluate three online-accessible rare disease DSSs using phenotypes der

Podcast reassurance to equity of implementation: Expanding the therapeutic potential of charles bonnet syndrome education.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a condition that can cause people with vision loss to see things that are not actually present, such as patterns, objects, animals, or people. Although these experiences are usually not a sign of mental illness, many individuals feel worried, confused, or reluctant to discuss their symptoms with healthcare professionals. A recent study in Therapeutic Advances in Ophthalmology showed that an educational podcast helped people with CBS better understand their condition and reduced some of the emotional distress associated with hallucinations. This finding highligh

Inhaled Nitric Oxide Utilization in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Treated With Extracorporeal Life Support: A Propensity Score Analysis.

Although used commonly, ability of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) to improve outcomes in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who receive extracorporeal life support (ECLS) remains controversial. We sought to determine the association between pre-ECLS use of iNO and mortality in infants with CDH from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Registry. Neonates who underwent ECLS for CDH were identified from the ELSO Registry from 2009 to 2019. Patients were categorized into those treated with iNO versus not prior to initiating ECLS. Patients were then matched 1:1 for case-m
