Evaluation of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma treated by radical irradiation with mold radiotherapy using a customized device: a retrospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: It is very important to determine the indication of mold radiotherapy for the radical treatment of oral cancer. We investigated eight patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who were treated by radical irradiation with mold radiotherapy using a customized device. METHODS: The subject is a case of curable superficial oral cancer of a few millimeters, or cancer of a size that can be cured by the placement of the radiation source. Of the eight patients, six were male and two were female, aged 64-93 years (mean, 78.9 years; median, 73.5 years). The primary sites were the buccal muc

[Merkel cell carcinoma].

Merkel cell carcinoma (Mcc) is a very rare, malignant, neuroendocrine tumour. Mcc has an aggressive behavior, local recurrence, and regional or distant metastasis generally develop within a short period of time. At the Oral Medicine Department 158,056 patients were treated between 1970 and 2004. A single case of Mcc was diagnosed, in a 79-year-old woman. The tumour was localized to the upper lip. After successful cryosurgery and a 7-year tumour-free period, a new tumour developed in her palatine tonsil. It was an anaplastic carcinoma with neuroendocrine features, raising the possibility of a l

One-Stage Supramaximal Full-Thickness Wedge Resection of Vascular Lip Anomalies.

PURPOSE: Vascular lip anomalies include infantile hemangiomas, venous malformations, and arteriovenous malformations. Surgical management can be complicated by alterations in horizontal length, vertical height, and lip thickness from the underlying pathology. Additional reconstructive challenges include preservation of oral continence, vermillion definition, and the sublabial sulcus. This report describes a technique of supramaximal single-stage full-thickness wedge resection of these lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study approved by the institutional review board of patients

Yu's flap for lower lip and reverse Yu's flap for upper lip reconstruction: 20 years experience.

Reconstruction of defects of the lip caused by cancer with its requirements of a complicated anatomical structure, important physiological function, and acceptable cosmetic result, is a challenge for oral and maxillofacial and plastic surgeons. A method that combines rotation and advancement flaps was described by Yu in 1989 for the reconstruction of defects of the lower lip. In our department between January 1992 and December 2012, 8 patients had reverse Yu flaps for the reconstruction of upper lip defects and 56 patients had classic Yu flaps for lower lip defects. Patients with defects locat

Upper lip reconstruction with the alar crescent flap: A new approach.

PURPOSE: The alar crescent advancement flap technique has been widely used for repair of large central defects of the upper lip and base of the nose because of its 1-stage procedural simplicity and good results. Several more complicated and multiple staged procedures that respect either structure or function, often compromising one to achieve the other, have become popular and have recently taken its place. However, these procedures are more complex and in many cases require a staged approach. In this study, we present a series of 33 patients who underwent reconstruction of large upper lip def

Multiple endocrine neoplasia-2B presenting with orthodontic relapse.

The multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes are a relatively uncommon group of genetic disorders characterized by the development of tumors in various endocrine organs. MEN type 2B is of particular interest to the dental profession because of its oral manifestations, which are often some of the earliest clinically detectable signs of the disorder. Early identification of this syndrome is critical because affected patients often develop a characteristic malignancy, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, at a very early age. We describe a 17-year-old male whose initial diagnosis of MEN-2B was

Synchronous Polymorphous Adenocarcinoma and Canalicular Adenoma on the Upper Lip: An Unusual Presentation and Immunohistochemical Analysis.

Multiple salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) are most common in the major than minor salivary glands. The most MSGTs are synchronous, either benign or malignant. A 61-year-old woman was referred presenting nine submucosal nodules, firm to fluctuant, being five nodules on the right side and four nodules on the left side of the upper lip. An incisional biopsy was performed. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed in 5-µm sections for histopathologic analysis. Immunohistochemical reactions were carried out in 3-µm sections in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. The histopathological analy

Cutaneous neuroendocrine (Merkel cell) carcinoma occurred after resection of malignant melanoma.

An elderly man presented with a brown border nodule of the left upper lip that appeared to be clinically consistent with metastatic melanoma; he had previously undergone two surgical removals of melanoma in the right temporal region. Routine histologic examination was not sufficient for diagnosis, but Merkel cell carcinoma was diagnosed by immunohistochemical studies Neuroendocrine carcinoma of viscera was excluded. Because this case could not be differentiated from amelanotic melanoma and malignant lymphoma based on histologic appearances, immunohistochemical staining was helpful for diagnosi

Single vs dual genetic disease in children with congenital anomalies and solid tumors.

PURPOSE: Genome sequencing (GS) presents a powerful approach to uncover disease-causing genetic variants. We used GS to examine single vs dual molecular causes in some of the most complicated pediatric cases-those with both a neoplasm and a birth defect. METHODS: From our pediatric biobank, we selected 1463 children with a major congenital malformation, such as cleft lip/palate or internal organ defect, including 827 cases with a pediatric-onset cancer. The cohort includes nearly 40% non-White and/or multiracial individuals. We implemented GS as a first-tier diagnostic method and hypothesized

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and minor salivary glands: a systematic review of an uncommon clinicopathological entity.

INTRODUCTION: Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and minor salivary glands (CATMSG) is a rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 1% of salivary gland tumors. In the past it has been considered a possible variant of polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA), while nowadays it is accepted as a provisional entity in the WHO classification. The aim of this paper is to systematically review the existing literature about CATMSG with a particular attention to differential diagnosis and prognostic factors. METHODS: This study was performed in accordance with the PRISMA checklist. A comprehens

Sialadenoma Papilliferum: Analysis of Seven New Cases and Review of the Literature.

Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm that comprises from 0.4 to 1.2% of all salivary gland tumors. The tumor is so named because of its microscopic resemblance to the syringocystadenoma papilliferum, an uncommon benign tumor of sweat gland origin. The purpose of this paper is to report the clinical and microscopic features of seven new cases of SP and combine them with cases previously reported in the English language literature to further define this unusual lesion. Combining our cases with acceptable cases from the literature, the palate (especially the hard
