Air pollution, traffic noise, mental health, and cognitive development: A multi-exposure longitudinal study of London adolescents in the SCAMP cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that air pollution and noise may have detrimental psychological impacts, but there are few studies evaluating adolescents, ground-level ozone exposure, multi-exposure models, or metrics beyond outdoor residential exposure. This study aimed to address these gaps. METHODS: Annual air pollution and traffic noise exposure at home and school were modelled for adolescents in the Greater London SCAMP cohort (N=7555). Indoor, outdoor and hybrid environments were modelled for air pollution. Cognitive and mental health measures were self-completed at two timepoi…

A prospective case series assessing the Imperial College London intraoperative radiotherapy protocol for advanced rectal cancer: an IDEAL phase 2a study.

AIM: Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) decreases local recurrence rates for advanced rectal cancer. Nevertheless, utilization of IORT is limited due to the associated logistical and financial challenges. The aim of this study is to describe the development and delivery of a novel IORT protocol for advanced rectal cancer that overcomes these difficulties in the context of the early phase of an IDEAL 2a study. The primary outcome measure was the ability to deliver IORT using this novel protocol with IORT-related toxicity as the secondary outcome measure. METHOD: Consecutive patients with advan

Dental public health in action: foundation dentists' delivery of an oral health promotion outreach project for people experiencing homelessness in London.

Dental public health in action: foundation dentists' delivery of an oral health promotion outreach project for people experiencing homelessness in London.Within a decade, the UK has seen a dramatic increase in homelessness. This is defined as being without an available home that could reasonably be occupied. The increase has been driven by increasing poverty, welfare reform, cuts to public services and lack of affordable housing (Bramley et al., 2015; Fitzpatrick et al., 2013; Fitzpatrick et al., 2018). Rough sleeping in England alone has increased by 2,909 people or 165% since 2010 (Ministry …

Investigations and control measures following a non-travel-associated case of toxigenic Cornyebacterium diphtheriae, London, United Kingdom, December 2009-January 2010.

Despite advancements in antifungal therapies, the development of resistance to conventional drugs has compromised treatment outcomes, creating an urgent need for novel therapeutic approaches. Andrographolide, a key bioactive compound from Andrographis paniculata, has demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. However, its antifungal potential, particularly against clinically relevant fungi, remains underexplored. Amphotericin B, a classic antifungal drug, is widely used for severe fungal infections, but limited by its toxicity at higher doses. Combination therapy has emerged as a prom

Meningococcal W135 carriage; enhanced surveillance amongst east London Muslim pilgrims and their household contacts before and after attending the 2002 Hajj.

BACKGROUND: For two successive years, 2000 and 2001, there was a world-wide outbreak of W135 meningococcal disease amongst pilgrims who attended the Hajj and in their contacts after returning home. METHODS: Beginning January 2002, we offered meningococcal quadrivalent polysaccharide vaccine (against serogroups A, C, Y and W135) to pilgrims and collected a throat swab for meningococcal W135 carriage before and after their pilgrimage. RESULTS: The overall Neisseria meningitidis carriage pre-Hajj was 8.3% and 6.3% post-Hajj. We found W135 carriage rates of 0.8% before and 0.6% after Hajj, respe

Time to finding a regular primary care provider for unattached patients at the Primary Care Diabetes Support Program in London, Ontario, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: The Primary Care Diabetes Support Program (PCDSP) at St. Joseph's Health Care in London, Ontario, focuses on managing diabetes in high-risk adults (e.g., socially and medically complex) and works to attach patients to a regular primary care provider. We described the characteristics of the unattached patient population at the PCDSP and identified time to and predictors of attachment (i.e., finding a regular provider). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic medical record data of patients enrolled at the PCDSP between April 1, 2011, and March 31, 2018 an…

After the horse has bolted : A quantitative assessment of the count of civil protection officers in London local authorities between 2006 and 2024.

This paper examines trends in the employment of emergency planning officers (EPOs) within London's local governments over 18 years. The main aim is to assess how workforce levels in local authority resilience and civil protection roles have been influenced by policy and significant regional, national and international incidents and events. The paper analyses employment data, correlating EPO numbers with major legislative, economic and societal events to investigate perceived and actual workforce trends. Key findings reveal fluctuations in EPO employment, including a significant decline from 20…

The role of ANCA in the management of cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions or ENT pseudo-granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a London multicentre case series.

OBJECTIVE: In this multicentric study involving three London hospitals, we compared ANCA-positive and ANCA-negative cocaine-induced midline destructive lesions (CIMDL) patients to assess how presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) may correlate with disease severity. Our secondary aims are to better classify etiology centered around ANCA positivity and, consequently, better disease management. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to identify patients with CIMDL seen between January 2019 and December 2022. Population data including age, sex, presentation, endoscopic f…

Using public health scenarios to predict the utility of a national syndromic surveillance programme during the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

During 2012 real-time syndromic surveillance formed a key part of the daily public health surveillance for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was vital that these systems were evaluated prior to the Games; in particular what types and scales of incidents could and could not be detected. Different public health scenarios were created covering a range of potential incidents that the Health Protection Agency would require syndromic surveillance to rapidly detect and monitor. For the scenarios considered it is now possible to determine what is likely to be detectable and how incidents are…

A cross-sectional exploration of the relationship between Parkinson's disease and peripheral blood immune cells in an ethnically diverse East London population.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease patients (PD) display changes in the levels of circulating peripheral immune cells. A declining lymphocyte count and a raised neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may result from an impaired adaptive response and increased levels of inflammation. This study sought to identify circulating peripheral immune cell changes in PD patients. METHODS: PD and healthy controls (HC) were recruited from the East London Parkinson's Disease (ELPD) project. Numbers of immune cells from peripheral blood samples were cross-sectionally analysed across three (pre-, with…
