Age-related neural changes underlying long-term recognition of musical sequences.

Aging is often associated with decline in brain processing power and neural predictive capabilities. To challenge this notion, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to record the whole-brain activity of 39 older adults (over 60 years old) and 37 young adults (aged 18-25 years) during recognition of previously memorised and varied musical sequences. Results reveal that when recognising memorised sequences, the brain of older compared to young adults reshapes its functional organisation. In fact, it shows increased early activity in sensory regions such as the…

Multi-modal imaging of the auditory-larynx motor network for voicing perception.

Voicing is one of the most important characteristics of phonetic speech sounds. Despite its importance, voicing perception mechanisms remain largely unknown. To explore auditory-motor networks associated with voicing perception, we firstly examined the brain regions that showed common activities for voicing production and perception using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Results indicated that the auditory and speech motor areas were activated with the operculum parietale 4 (OP4) during both voicing production and perception. Secondly, we used a magnetoencephalography and examined the dy…

Alterations in the Topology of Functional Connectomes Are Associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Blast-Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Combat Veterans.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common condition in post-deployment service members (SM). SMs of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan also frequently experience traumatic brain injury (TBI) and exposure to blasts during deployments. This study evaluated the effect of these conditions and experiences on functional brain connectomes in post-deployment, combat-exposed veterans. Functional brain connectomes were created using 5-min resting-state magnetoencephalography data. Well-established clinical interviews determined current PTSD diagnosis, as well as deployment-acquired mild TBI a…

Atypical spatiotemporal activation of cerebellar lobules during emotional face processing in adolescents with autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social deficits and atypical facial processing of emotional expressions. The underlying neuropathology of these abnormalities is still unclear. Recent studies implicate cerebellum in emotional processing; other studies show cerebellar abnormalities in ASD. Here, we elucidate the spatiotemporal activation of cerebellar lobules in ASD during emotional processing of happy and angry faces in adolescents with ASD and typically developing (TD) controls. Using magnetoencephalography, we calculated dynamic statistical parametric maps across a period o…

Parietal Oscillatory Dynamics Mediate Developmental Improvement in Motor Performance.

Numerous recent studies have sought to determine the developmental trajectories of motor-related oscillatory responses from youth to adulthood. However, most of this work has relied on simple movements, and rarely have these studies linked developmental neural changes with maturational improvements in motor performance. In this study, we recorded magnetoencephalography during a complex finger-tapping task in a large sample of 107 healthy youth aged 9-15 years old. The relationships between region-specific neural activity, age, and performance metrics were examined using structural equation mod…

Multielectrode Transcranial Electrical Stimulation of the Left and Right Prefrontal Cortices Differentially Impacts Verbal Working Memory Neural Circuitry.

Recent studies have examined the effects of conventional transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on working memory (WM) performance, but this method has relatively low spatial precision and generally involves a reference electrode that complicates interpretation. Herein, we report a repeated-measures crossover study of 25 healthy adults who underwent multielectrode tDCS of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), right DLPFC, or sham in 3 separate visits. Shortly after each stimulation session, participants performed a verbal WM (VWM) task during magnetoencephalography, and the …

Association between tissue hypoxia, perfusion restrictions, and microvascular architecture alterations with lesion-induced impairment of neurovascular coupling.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been mainly utilized for the preoperative localization of eloquent cortical areas. However, lesion-induced impairment of neurovascular coupling (NVC) in the lesion border zone may lead to false-negative fMRI results. The purpose of this study was to determine physiological factors impacting the NVC. Twenty patients suffering from brain lesions were preoperatively examined using multimodal neuroimaging including fMRI, magnetoencephalography (MEG) during language or sensorimotor tasks (depending on lesion location), and a novel physiologic MRI app…

Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation Modulates Cortical Gamma Activity in the Cognitive Dimension of Chronic Pain.

A cognitive task, the n-back task, was used to interrogate the cognitive dimension of pain in patients with implanted dorsal root ganglion stimulators (DRGS). Magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals from thirteen patients with implanted DRGS were recorded at rest and while performing the n-back task at three increasing working memory loads with DRGS-OFF and the task repeated with DRGS-ON. MEG recordings were pre-processed, then power spectral analysis and source localization were conducted. DRGS resulted in a significant reduction in reported pain scores (mean 23%, p = 0.001) and gamma oscillator…

Intervention-specific patterns of cortical function plasticity during auditory encoding in people with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a neurocognitive illness characterized by behavioral and neural impairments in both early auditory processing and higher order verbal working memory. Previously we have shown intervention-specific cognitive performance improvements with computerized, targeted training of auditory processing (AT) when compared to a computer games (CG) control intervention that emphasized visual processing. To investigate spatiotemporal changes in patterns of neural activity specific to the AT intervention, the current study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) imaging to derive induced high gamma …

Left-Lateralized Contributions of Saccades to Cortical Activity During a One-Back Word Recognition Task.

Saccadic eye movements are an inherent component of natural reading, yet their contribution to information processing at subsequent fixation remains elusive. Here we use anatomically-constrained magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine cortical activity following saccades as healthy human subjects engaged in a one-back word recognition task. This activity was compared with activity following external visual stimulation that mimicked saccades. A combination of procedures was employed to eliminate saccadic ocular artifacts from the MEG signal. Both saccades and saccade-like external visual stimul…

Connecting occipital alpha band peak frequency, visual temporal resolution, and occipital GABA levels in healthy participants and hepatic encephalopathy patients.

Recent studies have proposed a connection between the individual alpha band peak frequency and the temporal resolution of visual perception in healthy human participants. This connection rests on animal studies describing oscillations in the alpha band as a mode of phasic thalamocortical information transfer for low-level visual stimuli, which critically relies on GABAergic interneurons. Here, we investigated the interplay of these parameters by measuring occipital alpha band peak frequency by means of magnetoencephalography, visual temporal resolution by means of behavioral testing, and occip…

A pilot treatment study for mild traumatic brain injury: Neuroimaging changes detected by MEG after low-intensity pulse-based transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a leading cause of sustained impairments in military service members, Veterans, and civilians. However, few treatments are available for mTBI, partially because the mechanism of persistent mTBI deficits is not fully understood. METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neuronal changes in individuals with mTBI following a passive neurofeedback-based treatment programme called IASIS. This programme involved applying low-intensity pulses using transcranial electrical stimulation (LIP-tES) with electroencephalography monitoring…

Dynamic hub load predicts cognitive decline after resective neurosurgery.

Resective neurosurgery carries the risk of postoperative cognitive deterioration. The concept of 'hub (over)load', caused by (over)use of the most important brain regions, has been theoretically postulated in relation to symptomatology and neurological disease course, but lacks experimental confirmation. We investigated functional hub load and postsurgical cognitive deterioration in patients undergoing lesion resection. Patients (n = 28) underwent resting-state magnetoencephalography and neuropsychological assessments preoperatively and 1-year after lesion resection. We calculated stationary h…

Alterations of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Tinnitus Patients as Assessed Using Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography.

Tinnitus is the perception of phantom sound without an external auditory stimulus. Using neuroimaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography, electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), many studies have demonstrated that abnormal functions of the central nervous system are closely associated with tinnitus. In our previous research, we reported using resting-state fMRI that several brain regions, including the rectus gyrus, cingulate gyrus, thalamus, hippocampus, caudate, inferior temporal gyrus, cerebellar hemisphere, and medial …

Occipital lobe epilepsy in children: characterization, evaluation and surgical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) poses a diagnostic challenge to clinicians. Here, we present our experience in the surgical management of OLE in children using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in the pre-operative evaluation. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed from 2000 to 2010 to identify patients with OLE. Patients were analyzed in two categories: isolated OLE (11 patients) and extended OLE (parietooccipital, temporooccipital, and temporoparietooccipital; 30 patients). Survival analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression were used to identify indepen…

Motor-cortical interaction in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: In Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) increased activation of the primary motor cortex (M1) before and during movement execution followed by increased inhibition after movement termination was reported. The present study aimed at investigating, whether this activation pattern is due to altered functional interaction between motor cortical areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 10 GTS-patients and 10 control subjects performed a self-paced finger movement task while neuromagnetic brain activity was recorded using Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Cerebro-cerebral coherence as a measu…

Neuroimaging study on brain asymmetries in situs inversus totalis.

Situs inversus totalis (SI) is a rare condition in which all visceral organs are arranged as mirror images of the usual pattern. The objective of this study was to determine whether SI individuals have reversed brain asymmetries. We performed a neuroimaging study on 3 SI subjects and 11 control individuals with normally arranged visceral organs. The language-dominant hemisphere was determined by magnetoencephalography. Left-hemispheric dominance was observed in 1 SI subject and all controls, whereas right-hemispheric dominance was observed in the remaining 2 SI subjects. Statistical analysis r…

Synchronized brain network underlying postural tremor in Wilson's disease.

Common neurological manifestation of Wilson's disease (WD) is a postural tremor of the upper extremities. Recently, the primary sensorimotor cortex (S1/M1) has been shown to be involved in WD postural tremor generation. However, neuropathological changes in WD are mostly observed in subcortical structures. We therefore aimed to investigate whether S1/M1 may be functionally interconnected with other brain areas. In five WD patients, we used magnetoencephalography and surface electromyography (EMG) to record simultaneously cerebral neuronal activity and muscular activity during sustained posture…
