Impact of force magnitude on effectiveness in cervical headgear therapy: a cephalometric analysis.

AIM: The main aim of this study was to study the impact of different force magnitudes on effectiveness in cervical headgear (CHG) therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients were treated with CHG with light (L; 300 g) or heavy (H; 500 g) force in this controlled clinical trial. Patients were asked to wear CHG for 10 hours/day for 10 months. The inner bow of the CHG was expanded (3-4 mm) and the long outer bow bent (10-20 degree) upward in relation to the inner bow. Adherence to instructions and force magnitude in CHG use was monitored by electronic module (Smartgear, Swissorthodontics, Swi

[Treatment of a patient with considerably thin alveolar bone and severe open bite].

This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old woman with a severe open bite. This patient presented a grade Ⅲ open bite, considerably thin alveolar bone, and evident labial buccal and lingual root form. The open bite was corrected by fixed orthodontic treatment and masticatory exercises. However, the increased pressure in the labial muscle caused by lip muscle exercise suppressed the canines, which resulted in the protrusion of the apices of canine roots out of the alveolar bone. Afterward, HX brackets, instead of self-locking, were used and bonded reversely in the occlusal-gingiva

Case report: long term lingual arch - preventable iatrogenic damage.

Lingual arches are fixed space maintainers utilised for the preservation of leeway space in cases of mild mandibular crowding. They are normally bonded using glass-ionomer cement applied to the internal surface of molar bands. As with any fixed appliance/retainer, if molar bands are not sufficiently monitored they have the potential to pose a significant threat to an individual's dental health. Unconventionally, in our example a lingual arch was used as a long-term fixed retainer with harmful consequence to one of the banded first permanent molars. A general understanding of molar bands and fi

Miniscrew-assisted customized lingual appliances for predictable treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion with severe deep overbite and overjet.

This report describes the use of miniscrew-assisted customized lingual fixed appliances in a patient with severe skeletal Class II malocclusion. The patient was a 12-year-old Chinese girl with the chief complaint of protrusive lips and anterior teeth. Her diagnosis included a skeletal Class II relationship with maxillary protrusion, a backward-rotated mandible, a full Angle Class II molar relationship, and severe deep overjet and overbite. Four premolars were extracted, and miniscrew anchorage was placed in the maxillary posterior lingual segment to provide maximum anchorage and to achieve ver

Orthodontic and surgical management of a patient with severe skeletal Class II deformity and facial asymmetry: A case report with a 5-year follow-up.

In this case report, we present the orthodontic and surgical management of an 18-year-old girl who had a severe craniofacial deformity, including maxillary prognathism, vertical maxillary excess (gummy smile), mandibular retrognathism, receding chin, and facial asymmetry caused by unilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis. For correction of the facial asymmetry, the patient's right mandibular ramus and body were lengthened via distraction osteogenesis after 5 months of preoperative orthodontic therapy. Subsequently, extraction of 4 first premolars, bimaxillary anterior segmental osteotomy,

Postoperative Delirium Following Orthognathic Surgery in a Young Patient.

Delirium is an organic mental syndrome with acute onset characterized by diffuse brain dysfunction and neural activity disorganization. It is usually related to cognition and perception changes, decreased level of consciousness, and disorganization of thoughts that are unrelated to previous dementia. Occurrence is more frequent in patients with previous degenerative disease and elderly patients, especially those older than 85 years. Although the pathophysiology is not totally known, studies have shown that, among the main factors that lead to delirium, the drugs used for general anesthesia ind

Multiple tooth anomalies in a nonsyndromic patient with class II division 2 malocclusions: A case report and a literature review.

Reports in the literature about the craniofacial characteristics of patients with class II division 2 malocclusions show a lot of different patterns accompanied by palatally displaced upper incisors, congenital missing teeth, polydiastema, fusion, germination, tooth impaction, peg-shaped lateral incisors, persistent teeth, hypodontia, persistent deciduous teeth, transpositions, and supernumerary teeth. The following case report focuses on the description of the clinical characteristics observed on a patient with a very unusual conjunction of dental and skeletal anomalies mentioned above, as we

Modified camouflage therapy in an adult class I patient with TMJ complaints. A case report.

The present case report documents the hitherto unusual application of camouflage orthodontics in one of our patients. Our female patient had previously been treated orthodontically alio loco and had also undergone bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. She presented with TMJ complaints, with associated pains. Despite a dental Class I and centrally seated condyles, her discs had prolapsed anteriorly without reduction and she had developed a massive degenerative-inflammatory TMJ disease. Skeletally, she was a Class II case despite previous orthognathic surgery. In addition, there was also an initial

Three-dimensional retraction of anterior teeth with orthodontic miniplates in patients with temporomandibular disorder.

Vertical dimension control is critical for adults with Class II high-angle malocclusions. If the patient has a temporomandibular disorder, this requirement is exacerbated. When extraction is planned, the treatment challenge is further increased. This article reports on a new biomechanical design (C-therapy) appropriate for anterior segment retraction with excellent control of the vertical dimension, even in a Class II high-angle patient with a temporomandibular disorder. Maximum retraction of the maxillary anterior segment can be achieved with a lingual retractor and a palatal miniplate withou

Facial and dental arch asymmetries in Class II subdivision malocclusion.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if any significant differences existed with regard to dental arch and facial asymmetries between persons having malocclusions with well-defined asymmetric characteristics, specifically Angle's Class II subdivision malocclusions, and persons having normal occlusions. Secondarily, it was sought to determine the nature of the differences that contributed to the asymmetric occlusal relationship of buccal segments observed in Class II subdivision malocclusions. The sample consisted of 28 subjects in each of the two groups. All possessed a full comp
