Nursing support for symptoms in patients with cancer and caregiver burdens: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Terminally ill patients with cancer experience a variety of symptoms, and their families experience certain caregiver burdens. Most studies on this topic have focused on the symptoms experienced by patients with cancer. There is little established evidence to show how nursing support affects these symptoms and burdens. Nurses provide support by extrapolating their clinical experience, practical knowledge and insights gained from the treatment phase of patients with cancer, regardless of the existence or degree of evidence. This study presents a scoping review protocol with the ai

A Systematic Review of Parkinson's Disease Pharmacogenomics: Is There Time for Translation into the Clinics?

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most frequent neurodegenerative disease, which creates a significant public health burden. There is a challenge for the optimization of therapies since patients not only respond differently to current treatment options but also develop different side effects to the treatment. Genetic variability in the human genome can serve as a biomarker for the metabolism, availability of drugs and stratification of patients for suitable therapies. The goal of this systematic review is to assess the current evidence for the clinical translation of pharmacog

Applications of Machine Learning in Human Microbiome Studies: A Review on Feature Selection, Biomarker Identification, Disease Prediction and Treatment.

The number of microbiome-related studies has notably increased the availability of data on human microbiome composition and function. These studies provide the essential material to deeply explore host-microbiome associations and their relation to the development and progression of various complex diseases. Improved data-analytical tools are needed to exploit all information from these biological datasets, taking into account the peculiarities of microbiome data, i.e., compositional, heterogeneous and sparse nature of these datasets. The possibility of predicting host-phenotypes based on taxon

Review: Sex-Based Differences in Treatment Outcomes for Persons With Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In order to address the current opioid crisis, research on treatment outcomes for persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) should account for biological factors that could influence individual treatment response. Women and men might have clinically meaningful differences in their experience in OUD treatment and might also have unique challenges in achieving successful, long-term recovery. This review summarizes and synthesizes the current literature on sex-based differences in OUD treatment outcomes. METHODS: Relevant literature was identified via automated and manual

Load Carriage-Related Paresthesias (Part 2): Meralgia Paresthetica.

This is the second of a two-part series addressing symptoms, evaluation, and treatment of load carriage- related paresthesias. Part 1 addressed rucksack palsy and digitalgia paresthetica; here, meralgia paresthetica (MP) is discussed. MP is a mononeuropathy involving the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). MP has been reported in load carriage situations where the LFCN was compressed by rucksack hipbelts, pistol belts, parachute harnesses, and body armor. In the US military, the rate of MP is 6.2 cases/10,000 personyears. Military Servicewomen have higher rates than Servicemen, and rates i

Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum in the management of Peyronie's disease: a review of the evidence.

OBJECTIVES: Peyronie's disease (PD) is a connective tissue disorder resulting in the abnormal accumulation of scar or plaques in the tunica albuginea of the penis. The condition is characterized by two phases: an active, inflammatory phase, and a stable, chronic phase. Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) was isolated in the mid-1900s and postulated as a potential pharmacologic strategy for breaking down the abnormal connective tissue plaques of PD. Prior to the introduction of CCH, a wide variety of treatment modalities for PD were used in clinical practice, including oral and topical m

3D multi-channel bi-functionalized silk electrospun conduits for peripheral nerve regeneration.

Despite technological advances over the past 25 years, a complete recovery from peripheral nerve injuries remains unsatisfactory today. The autograft is still considered the "gold standard" in clinical practice; however, postoperative complications and limited availability of nerve tissue have motivated the development of alternative approaches. Among them, the development of biomimetic nerve graft substitutes is one of the most promising strategies. In this study, multichanneled silk electrospun conduits bi-functionalized with Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Ciliary Neurotropic Factor (CNTF) we

Non-adherence to anti-TB drugs among TB/HIV co-infected patients in Mbarara Hospital Uganda: prevalence and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Non-adherence to treatment remains a major obstacle to efficient tuberculosis control in developing countries. The dual infection of Tuberculosis and HIV presents further adherence problems because of high pill burden and adverse effects. This poses a risk of increased multi-drug resistant TB. However, the prevalence of non-adherence and its associated factors have not been studied in these patients in Uganda. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with non-adherence to anti-TB drugs among TB/HIV co-infected patients in Mbarara hospital. METHODS: A cross-s

Recognition and treatment of dysthymia in elderly patients.

This review focuses on recent literature concerning dysthymia in the elderly population. Epidemiological data and clinical picture, diagnostic and therapeutic issues are evaluated and discussed. Although depressive syndromes are common in older patients, prevalence rates of dysthymia in the elderly are lower than in younger adults. This finding may be the consequence of the diagnostic criteria provided by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) which are not specific for older adults. Other factors that complicate making diagnoses of dysthymia in older individuals are c

Polymyxin and Bacitracin in the Irrigation Solution Provide No Benefit for Bacterial Killing in Vitro.

BACKGROUND: Many surgeons add topical antibiotics to irrigation solutions assuming that this has a local effect and eliminates bacteria. However, prior studies have suggested that the addition of antibiotics to irrigation solution confers little benefit, adds cost, may potentiate anaphylactic reactions, and may contribute to antimicrobial resistance. We sought to compare the antimicrobial efficacy and cytotoxicity of an irrigation solution containing polymyxin-bacitracin with other commonly used irrigation solutions. METHODS: Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were exposed to irrigati
