Prospects for improving future mental health of children through prenatal maternal micronutrient supplementation in China.

Prenatal micronutrients in pregnant women's diets, including supplements, have an essential role in fetal brain development and may reduce the risk of mental disorders in offspring. Folic acid, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and choline have been investigated for this purpose. Folic acid supplementation throughout pregnancy has well-established positive effects. Vitamin D, administered to the mother before birth or to the newborn, has also been shown to reduce the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy have a more uncertain role, with recent trials question

Do incentivised community workers in informal settlements influence maternal and infant health in urban India?

Setting: The introduction of accredited social health activists (ASHAs, community workers) in the community is encouraged by the Government of India as being of universal benefit for maternal and infant health. Objectives: In two informal settlements in Chandigarh, India, one with ASHAs and the other without, we assessed 1) whether ASHAs influenced certain selected maternal and infant health indicators, and 2) perceptions among women who did not contact the ASHAs. Design: This was a mixed-methods study conducted from April 2013 to March 2016 using quantitative (retrospective programme data) an

Measuring oral health during pregnancy: sensitivity and specificity of a maternal oral screening (MOS) tool.

BACKGROUND: Midwives can play a key role in promoting the oral health of pregnant women and assessing their oral health status. A maternal oral assessment tool (MOS) was developed and pilot tested by the study investigators to assist midwives in this role and the results were promising. The aim of this study was to undertake further sensitivity and specificity assessment of the MOS tool using two-comparison approaches- the longer oral health screening tool known as the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and an oral assessment by trained study dentists. METHODS: Pregnant women were recruited

Nutrition education and counselling provided during pregnancy: effects on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes.

Nutrition education and counselling (NEC) is a commonly applied strategy to improve maternal nutrition during pregnancy. However, with the exception special populations and specific diets, the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes has not been systematically reviewed. Using a modified Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group method we systematically reviewed the literature and identified and abstracted 37 articles. We conducted meta-analyses for the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and infant health outcomes including gestational weight gain, maternal anaemia, birth

Breast implant surveillance reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration: maternal-child health problems.

There is continuing concern that women who receive breast implants may be at increased risk for adverse reproductive outcomes or experience problems with breastfeeding. It is unknown whether exposure to biomaterials in breast implants may have teratogenic effects or leach into breast milk causing postnatalproblems. We studied the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) experience by analyzing a case series of adverse event reports received and entered into the FDA's Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database or the Device Experience Network (DEN) database by December 31, 2002

Challenges of maternal mortality reduction and opportunities under National Rural Health Mission--a critical appraisal.

Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) continues to remain high in our country without showing any declining trend over a period of two decades. The proportions of maternal deaths contributed by direct obstetric causes have also remained more or less the same in rural areas. There is a strong need to improve coverage of antenatal care, promote institutional deliveries and provide emergency obstetric care. Delays occur in seeking care for obstetric complications and levels of 'met obstetric need' continue to be low in many parts of the country. Most of the First Referral Units (FRUs) and CHCs function

Impact of employment on maternal mental health during pregnancy: evidence from a Korean prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy increases vulnerability to mental health challenges. We investigated stage-specific associations of employment with maternal depression, anxiety, and stress, and whether household income moderates these relationships. METHODS: We analyzed data from the prospective Korean Pregnancy Outcome Study (n = 3,405). Employment and mental health outcomes—depression, anxiety, and stress—were assessed during the first, second, and third trimesters. Logistic regression calculated adjusted odds ratios (aORs), controlling for confounders including history of depression and physical heal

Optimizing maternal weight gain to improve neonatal Health: A nationwide birth cohort analysis in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain (GWG) is a modifiable factor influencing maternal and neonatal health. Current GWG guidelines, largely derived from Western populations, may not align with the physiological and sociodemographic characteristics of Asian women. This study examined the associations between GWG and pregnancy outcomes across pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) categories in a nationally representative Taiwanese cohort. METHODS: We analyzed 18,970 full-term singleton mother-infant pairs from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study. GWG was calculated from self-reported pre-pregnancy and d
