OBJECTIVE: To examine histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of human corneal buttons from patients who developed keratoglobus.
METHODS: Nine corneal buttons were obtained during penetrating keratoplasty from patients with keratoglobus. Histologic features were examined using hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections. Immunohistochemical staining for alpha1-proteinase inhibitor, Sp1, and matrix metalloproteinases 1, 2, and 3 was performed, with 2 normal and 2 corneal sections with keratoconus as controls.

MMP-2, MMP-9, and uPA have been previously described as important to the invasive and metastatic potential of human tumors, including breast, lung, glioblastoma, and prostate. We examined the activity of these proteases and the levels of their inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in a series of human meningioma tissue samples. BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor perindopril reduced aortic diameter by 3-7mm in Marfan syndrome (MFS) patients. Excessive signalling by the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) has been implicated in the development of aortic dilatation.
