Assessment of maxillary sinus volume for the sinus lift operation by three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: To calculate sinus and bone graft volumes and vertical bone heights from sequential magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations in patients undergoing a sinus lift operation. METHODS: MRI scans were obtained pre-operatively and at 10 days and 10 weeks post-operatively, using a 0.95 tesla MRI scanner and a three-dimensional (3D) magnetisation prepared, rapid acquisition gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) sequence. RESULTS: Estimates of the bone graft volumes required for a desired vertical bone height were made from the pre-operative MRI scan. Measurements of the graft volumes and bone hei

Morphometric Analysis of the Maxillary Sinus and Its Implications for Sinus Augmentation Surgery in an Eastern Indian Population.

Introduction Sinus augmentation surgery, also called sinus graft or lift, involves elevating the Schneiderian membrane in the posterior maxilla to enhance alveolar bone height by placing a bone graft or osteogenic materials. This procedure is commonly performed to support dental implants. This study evaluates the morphometry of the maxillary sinus across different age groups within the Eastern Indian population and its implications for sinus augmentation surgery. Methods We analysed 85 patients (55 males (64.7%) and 30 females (35.3%)) who underwent computed tomography scans, assessing key par…

Preoperative Maxillary Sinus Imaging and the Outcome of Sinus Floor Augmentation and Dental Implants in Asymptomatic Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Preoperative maxillary sinus imaging findings have been suggested to be associated with complications and outcomes of sinus lift and dental implant procedures; nonetheless the evidence is controversial. The aim of this study was to examine the association between preoperative maxillary sinus imaging findings and outcomes of sinus lift and dental implant procedures in asymptomatic patients. METHODS: We included all patients who underwent maxillary sinus lift and dental implant procedures between 2014 and 2017. Maxillary sinus imaging findings were extracted from pre-procedural dent…

Fungus Ball of the Maxillary Sinus-Modern Treatment by Osteoplastic Approach and Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery.

PURPOSE: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is considered standard surgical therapy for fungus ball of the maxillary sinus. However, recent findings have indicated an odontogenic etiology, which requires simultaneous treatment of the dental origin. This study presents the authors' treatment results of fungus ball of the maxillary sinus using a combination of FESS and an endoscopically assisted osteoplastic approach through the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, enabling simultaneous treatment of the dental origin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 22 patients with histopathologica…

Retrieval of root fragment in maxillary sinus via anterolateral wall of the sinus to preserve alveolar bone.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to present a functional surgery for retrieval of displaced root fragments from the maxillary sinus while preserving the alveolar bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with associated root fragments displaced into the maxillary sinus after tooth extraction were collected and reviewed retrospectively. All patients included in the study were subjected to surgical removal of the displaced root by the use of piezosurgery. In case the root fragment was barely detectable, endoscopy would be helpful. RESULTS: Eleven roots were removed via small win…

Management of maxillary sinus perforation at the time of immediate implantation with sinus-socket osteotomy (SSO) technique.

Immediate implantation related to socket and vital anatomy of the maxillary sinus area requires careful consideration. One major complication that may occur during immediate replacement of posterior teeth is maxillary sinus membrane perforation. To date, no specific technique has been proposed to manage this problem so that implant insertion remains possible during the same surgery. In this paper, we introduce a method to manage this type of perforation and while performing simultaneous implantation. We used sinus-socket osteotomy (SSO), a modified osteotomy technique for socket preparation th…

Prevalence of Maxillary Sinus Hypoplasia and Silent Sinus Syndrome: A Radiological Cross-Sectional Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus hypoplasia (MSH), associated with enophthalmos and hypoglobus in the silent sinus syndrome (SSS), is a poorly studied condition. The real incidence of MSH and SSS in the adult population is not known. Our study aims at estimating the radiological prevalence of MSH and identifying undiagnosed cases of SSS in a retrospective cohort. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective cohort study was performed in adults, without a history of maxillofacial surgery or trauma, undergoing head CT scans. A radiological database of 1012 consecutive scans was reviewed independently by…
