Cortical semantization of autobiographical memory over subjective chronological time: An fMRI study.

The content and neural representation of autobiographical memories change over time; however, these changes are poorly understood. We hypothesize that the content of memories becomes semanticized, while the neural representation moves from mesial to cortical structures. We conducted an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) study on the effects of time on autobiographical memory retrieval. Twenty healthy participants were cued by a selection of photographs that represented distinct episodic memories from 1, 2, 6, and 14 years prior to scanning. Our behavioural data of self-report measure

Autobiographical memory, autonoetic consciousness, and identity in Asperger syndrome.

Previous results from research on individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) suggest a diminished ability for recalling episodic autobiographical memory (AM). The primary aim of this study was to explore autobiographical memory in individuals with Asperger syndrome and specifically to investigate whether memories in those with AS are characterized by fewer episodic 'remembered' events (due to a deficit in autonoetic consciousness). A further aim was to examine whether such changes in AM might also be related to changes in identity, due to the close relationship between memory and the self and to

Subtle cognitive deficits after cerebellar infarcts.

The role of the cerebellum in cognitive functions has been under debate. We investigated the neuropsychological functioning of patients with cerebellar lesions (infarcts) and evaluated the significance of laterality in cognitive symptoms. Twenty-six patients with exclusive cerebellar lesions as verified by clinical and neuroradiological findings underwent a neuropsychological assessment at the acute stage and at 3 months. Their performance was compared with 14 controls, also assessed twice. The focus was on four domains: visuospatial/motor functions, episodic memory, working memory and attenti

Improved autobiographical memory with central thalamic deep brain stimulation in traumatic brain injury.

Memory impairment is a common, debilitating consequence of moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury, affecting daily life functions. There are few treatment options for memory impairment, particularly for real-life autobiographical memory. Recently, in a first-in-human Phase I clinical trial, we demonstrated the improvement of executive attention and arousal in five participants with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury using deep brain stimulation of the central thalamus, specifically the central lateral nucleus and its projecting fibres within the medial portion of the dorsal tegmental

Contextual elaboration shapes object recognition memory across levels of childhood adversity in healthy adults.

Childhood adversity is a known risk factor for psychopathology across the lifespan. One proposed mechanism involves long-term alterations in hippocampal memory systems, leading to disruptions in the integration of episodic memory within its contextual framework. It is therefore essential to investigate how individuals exposed to early life stress use contextual information during memory formation. We conducted an experimental study in healthy adults (n = 76), manipulating the depth of contextual encoding. Participants viewed object-background pairs under either contextual or object-focused con

DREADD-inactivation of dorsal CA1 pyramidal neurons in mice impairs retrieval of object and spatial memories.

The hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe brain region, is critical for the consolidation of information from short-term memory into long-term episodic memory and for spatial memory that enables navigation. Hippocampal damage in humans has been linked to amnesia and memory loss, characteristic of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Numerous studies indicate that the rodent hippocampus contributes significantly to long-term memory for spatial and nonspatial information. For example, muscimol-induced depression of CA1 neuronal activity in the dorsal hippocampus impairs the encoding, consolida

Momentary loneliness and cognitive performance variability in daily life: an ecological momentary assessment study.

Loneliness is increasingly recognised as a dynamic risk factor for cognitive health outcomes, yet little is known about how momentary fluctuations in loneliness relate to cognitive functioning in daily life. In the current research, 157 mid-to-later life adults completed ecological momentary assessments five times per day for 20 days, reporting momentary loneliness and completing brief mobile cognitive tasks. Using Bayesian mixed-effects location-scale models, we examined within- and between-person associations between momentary loneliness and both levels and variability of cognitive performan

Body Circumference and Cognitive Function: Role of Apolipoprotein E ε4 in the Elderly.

This study examined the relationships between mid-arm circumference (MAC) and calf circumference (CC) with cognitive performance, considering the moderating effect of apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE4) status. Data from 196 older adults (65-90 years) in the General Lifestyle and AD (GLAD) study were analyzed. Cognitive performance was assessed using the CERAD neuropsychological battery, with episodic memory score (EMS) and non-memory score (NMS) as primary outcomes. Multiple linear regression analyses examined associations between MAC, CC, and waist circumference (WC) with cognition, adjusting

Order-Selective Cells Tile Temporal Space and Predict Order Memory in Humans.

Remembering the temporal order of events is critical for episodic memory, allowing us to link individual events into sequences. While the medial temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex are essential for this process, the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we characterized the representation of order information at the level of single neurons and field potentials recorded from human neurosurgical patients watching naturalistic videos of everyday events and later recalling the order and content of the events depicted. We found order-selective cells (OSCs) in the human hippoc

Amount and delay insensitivity during intertemporal choice in three neurodegenerative diseases reflects dorsomedial prefrontal atrophy.

Patients with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias often make poor financial decisions, but it remains unclear whether this reflects specific failures in decision-making or more general deficits in episodic and working memory. We investigated how patients with Alzheimer's disease, behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) apply information in an intertemporal choice task between smaller intermediate and larger delayed rewards, with minimal memory demands. Multilevel modeling estimated subject-level sensitivities to three att

Semantic memory recognition is supported by intrinsic recollection-like processes: "The butcher on the bus" revisited.

Dual-process models suggest that recognition memory is independently supported by recollection and familiarity. Current theories attribute recollection solely to hippocampally mediated episodic memory (EM), and familiarity to both episodic and semantic memory (SM) supported by medial temporal lobe cortex (MTLC) and prefrontal cortex. We tested whether, contrary to this view, recollection-like processes also intrinsically support SM recognition and whether MTL structures are involved in their execution. A semantic process dissociation procedure (PDP) with famous and non-famous names was used in

Mental time travel into the past and the future in healthy aged adults: an fMRI study.

Remembering the past and envisioning the future rely on episodic memory which enables mental time travel. Studies in young adults indicate that past and future thinking share common cognitive and neural underpinnings. No imaging data is yet available in healthy aged subjects. Using fMRI, we scanned older subjects while they remembered personal events (PP: last 12 months) or envisioned future plans (FP: next 12 months). Behaviorally, both time-periods were comparable in terms of visual search strategy, emotion, frequency of rehearsal and recency of the last evocation. However, PP were more epis

Amnesia and the hippocampus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Long-term memory impairments have great medical significance and a considerable health and economic burden. Understanding their cognitive and neuroanatomical underpinnings is of crucial importance. Severe amnesia is usually observed following bilateral hippocampal pathology. This review addresses the precise role of the hippocampus and related medial temporal lobe structures in amnesia. RECENT FINDINGS: Disagreements exist over whether, following selective hippocampal damage: retrograde amnesia for episodic memories is temporally limited or extensive and ungraded; anterogra

Targeted memory reactivation during sleep improves emotional memory modulation following imagery rescripting.

Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) during sleep benefits memory integration and consolidation. In this pre-registered study, we investigated the effects of TMR applied during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep following modulation and updating of aversive autobiographical memories using imagery rescripting (ImR). During 2-5 nights postImR, 80 healthy participants were repeatedly presented with either idiosyncratic words from an ImR updated memory during sleep (experimental group) or with no or neutral words (control groups) using a wearable EEG device (Mobile Health Systems Lab-Sleepband, MHS

Multifocal hypometabolic correlates to deficits of verbal memory in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neuropsychological research on mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) often highlights material-specific memory deficits, but a lesion-focused model may not accurately reflect the underlying networks that support episodic memory in these patients. Our study evaluated the pathophysiology behind verbal learning/memory deficits as revealed by hypometabolism quantified through 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). METHODS: This retrospective study included thirty presurgical patients with intractable unilateral MTLE who underwent interictal FDG-PET

[Early Onset and Independence of Prospective Memory Impairments in Alzheimer's Disease - A Challenge for Diagnosis].

Prospective memory (PM) refers to the ability to remember to carry out an intended action at a specific point in the future. Despite its crucial role in autonomy and quality of life, this cognitive function remains understudied and is still rarely assessed in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This review examines whether PM impairments emerge independently and at an early stage of AD. Some studies suggest that PM deficits appear earlier than, and independently of, retrospective memory (RM) deficits. They may therefore constitute a valuable complementary marker for the early identificatio

Concept and location neurons in the human brain provide the 'what' and 'where' in memory formation.

Our brains create new memories by capturing the 'who/what', 'where' and 'when' of everyday experiences. On a neuronal level, mechanisms facilitating a successful transfer into episodic memory are still unclear. We investigated this by measuring single neuron activity in the human medial temporal lobe during encoding of item-location associations. While previous research has found predictive effects in population activity in human MTL structures, we could attribute such effects to two specialized sub-groups of neurons: concept cells in the hippocampus, amygdala and entorhinal cortex (EC), and a

Errorless Learning Therapy in Semantic Variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) is characterized by a progressive loss of semantic knowledge impairing the ability to name and to recognize the meaning of words. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the immediate and short-term effect of errorless learning speech therapy on the naming and recognition of commonly used words in patients with svPPA. METHODS: Eight participants diagnosed with svPPA received 16 sessions of intensive errorless learning speech therapy. Naming and word comprehension tasks were evaluated at baseline, immediately postintervention, an

An examination of semantic performance in mild cognitive impairment progressors and nonprogressors.

OBJECTIVE: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), and about half of older people with MCI will progress to AD within the next 5 years. The aim of the present study was to compare the semantic performance of MCI progressors (MCI-p) and nonprogressors (MCI-np). The hypothesis was that MCI-p would present with poorer semantic performance relative to MCI-np at baseline, indicating that semantic deficits may increase the risk of future decline toward AD. METHOD: Fifty-six MCI participants (aged 65-89) from the Consortium for Early Identification o
