BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the medial femoral condyle (MFC) is a common disorder in juvenile knees, although its biomechanical etiology remains unclear. Medial meniscus extrusion (MME) has been implicated in joint overload and degenerative changes; however, its relationship with lesion-specific OCD pathogenesis, particularly in inferior-central MFC lesions, has not been elucidated.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 56 knees from 47 patients (18 y or younger) who underwent surgical treatment for OCD. Lesions were categorized into MFC-classical/extended classic (M…

INTRODUCTION: Surgical meniscal lesions are common and 80% of cases involve the medial meniscus of a stable knee. There is a lack of consensus regarding postoperative rehabilitation protocols and a wide variation between restrictive and accelerated rehabilitation protocols exists. The main objective of this study was to report the functional results and the failure rate of the various rehabilitation protocols of the retrospective series of the French Society of Arthroscopy (SFA) after suturing the medial meniscus of a stable knee, considering whether the tear is stable or unstable.

BACKGROUND: Osteophyte formation is attracting attention as an early-stage pathology of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Although osteophyte formation is understood as a defense response to joint instability, its role and impact on OA remain largely unknown. Many studies have been conducted using the surgical destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) mouse model, but there are few standard evaluation methods, especially in the histological evaluation of early-stage osteophytes. The purpose of this study was to establish a reproducible and uniform method for histological evaluation of characteristi…

INTRODUCTION: Arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair is performed in the "figure-of-4 position" (supine, with the affected knee flexed and the lower leg crossed over the extended contralateral leg), and anchorage is often on the popliteal tendon. Extending the limb at the end of the procedure alters the relations between the popliteal tendon and the repaired meniscus. The present study aimed to assess lateral meniscal suture fixation on the popliteal tendon after a cycle of flexion-extension.
HYPOTHESIS: Extending the knee can induce suture release.
TYPE OF STUDY: Cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Meniscus extrusion is a serious and relatively frequent clinical problem. For this reason the role of different risk factors for this pathology is still the subject of debate. The goal of this study was to verify the results of previous theoretical work, based on the mathematical models, regarding a relationship between the cross-section shape of the meniscus and the risk of its extrusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Knee MRI examination was performed in 77 subjects (43 men and 34 women), mean age 34.99 years (range: 18-49 years), complaining of knee pain. Patients with osteoarthritic …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used to control arthroscopic pain. Addition of oral effective opioid "codeine" to NSAIDs may be more effective and decrease parenteral opioid consumption in the postoperative period. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and side effects of naproxen sodium and a new preparation naproxen sodium-codeine phosphate when administered preemptively for arthroscopic meniscectomy.
METHODS: Sixty-one patients were randomized into two groups to receive either oral naproxen sodium (Group N) or naproxen sod

Medial meniscus destabilization (MMD) is a surgical insult technique for modeling osteoarthritis (OA) by replicating chronic abnormal cartilage loading in animal joints in vivo. The present study aimed to characterize the immediate biomechanical effects (ex vivo) and short-term histological consequences (in vivo) of MMD in the rabbit knee. In a compressive loading test, contact stress distribution in the medial compartment was measured in eight cadaver rabbit knees, initially with all major joint structures uninjured (Baseline), after MMD, and finally after total medial meniscectomy (TMM). Sim…

PURPOSE: The meniscus plays an important role in the knee joint. Meniscal tears are the most common knee injuries, are seen in all age groups and have several causes. Meniscectomy and meniscal repair, including open or arthroscopic procedures, are common operations for orthopaedic surgeons. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to review published articles that compared meniscal repair (open suture and arthroscopic inside-out procedures) with meniscectomy (arthroscopic partial or total meniscectomy) for short- or long-term outcomes and to determine which procedure leads to a better outcome.

BACKGROUND: There is an emerging interest in using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2* measurement for the evaluation of degenerative cartilage in osteoarthritis (OA). However, relatively few studies have addressed OA-related changes in adjacent knee structures. This study used MRI T2* measurement to investigate sequential changes in knee cartilage, meniscus, and subchondral bone marrow in a rat OA model induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLX).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly separated into three groups (n = 6 each group). Group 1 was t…

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle is relatively rare, and it is reported to often be combined with a discoid lateral meniscus. Given the potential for healing, conservative management is indicated for stable osteochondritis dissecans in patients who are skeletally immature. However, patients with osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle combined with a discoid lateral meniscus often have persistent symptoms despite conservative management.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a seven-year-old Korean girl who had osteochondritis disseca…
